Protests across the country and around the world have brought people together to express their pain and anger with the unequal treatment and structural racism affecting Black people and people of color in the United States. Bonded by our Common Commitments – social justice, diversity, community building, civic engagement, spiritual exploration, and international perspective – the Bonner Community acts on these ideals through our direct and sustained engagement in communities. We are bonded by a broader commitment, inspired by leaders before us and that we carry out, faithfully, everyday.

The tragedies of the pandemic and the brutal deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others are awful and unjustified. These incidents fuel pain and fear in our own lives, which we courageously work to overcome and defeat everyday. We will try hard to be the hope we need in the weeks, months, and years of work ahead of us. Bonner Love is inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These words represent the hopes and ideals of countless and diverse organizers, activists, and change makers who inspire our movement. The heroes we celebrate have been shaped, and supported, by countless people whose names have been forgotten.

We recognize that social change requires the investment, hope, and participation of people from all walks of life, perspectives, and approaches. Bonner Love represents a Beloved Community in which we, as individuals and as a community are judged by character – not appearance, race, ethnicity, class, income, gender, sexual preference, nationality, or other aspects of our identity. You are valued!

This moment is also painful as the impact of COVID-19 has been devastating on our personal lives, our programs, our campuses, and our communities. But they have also pointed out existing disparities that we strive to tackle everyday. Our work is more important than ever!

We have lost so much. Students have lost opportunities to serve, to connect, and to graduate. Staff have lost their jobs and livelihood. Community partners are doing everything they can. Campuses are worried about closing. The implications are clear, pointing to the vast inequities in the fabric of our own lives, our organizations, our nation, and our world. These inequities are what the Bonner Community faces, tackles, and ameliorates every day. At the same time, we have an opportunity to claim and honor our value, within our own institutions, communities, nation, and world. We – wherever and whoever we are – represent change, hope, and love. We are the solution!

As we enter this week, and those beyond, take a moment for yourself and for those around you. Reflect on the people who have touched and have impacted you and your life, and whom you have impacted and touched. Remember, we are the Beloved Community. Celebrate and recognize your place and your contributions in a greater movement. As we deplore and work to fight against the inequity and injustice, let us look out for one another and embrace others in our community. Know that together we can and are bringing about a better, more just world. As you do this, be safe. You are loved by the Bonner Community. B-Love!

Thank you The Bonner foundation.
My name is River Jesse Lewis. I am a recent graduate of Morehouse College class of 2018. I graduated earning a B.A in Sociology. After graduation I will be entering the peace corps in December of 2018. With acceptance to Morehouse, I received the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Scholar Community Service Scholarship. I have away had a love for giving of myself. As a young scholar I was deeply involved in making an impact. My sophomore year I was fuels to create my own nonprofit to engage youth involvement from young men in the Atlanta. It is called “Operation Exposure”, The mission statement of Operation Exposure is to enlighten youth on positive lifestyle choices by instilling in them confidence to make ethical decisions to empower the quality of their community. This summer Operation Exposure will be putting on its third summer exposure program at Camp John J Barnhardt Scout Reservation in New London, North Carolina. Operation Summer Exposure is a summer camp program I started to give at risk youth the opportunity to attend an entire week at a sleep-away summer camp. The camp will be designed to spark their interest in constructive activities they may have never gotten a chance to experience, such as fishing, kayaking, archery, rifle shooting, motor boating, paddle boarding etc. This project is particularly important to me because, coming from a single-parent household, I wasn’t afforded many opportunities. One summer, I was blessed by an anonymous individual with a trip to summer camp, and have since become a lifelong lover of the experience. I began working there at 14 and a half, and have yet to miss a summer of mentoring, leadership, and most importantly, fun! I am a firm believer in doing anything you can to improve the lives of others, and this project is just one of the many ways I plan on doing this. I plan on bringing 11 young men to attend this week long camping experience and my goal is to raise 6,000 dollars By JULY 17th 2018 Ways to Donate Via U.S Mail Checks should be made out to: River Lewis Operation Summer Exposure P.O Box 1044, Salisbury, NC 28145 C/O Hope4U Foundation 2.
