It's time for a parish census!

While the parish staff diligently registers new parishioners and removes families who have reported that they are moving, we know that some families are no longer active in the parish or have experienced changes: new addresses or dropping old landline phones, deaths or births in the family, or adult children leaving home.

Having an accurate count of our members and knowing how to reach them is important to our parish community. This helps us know what kinds of programs to offer, influences our stewardship efforts, and helps us communicate important information about events and ministries. Most importantly, it ensures availability of and access to the sacraments!

We are asking each household to complete a census update form. Even if you’re newly registered, this is an excellent opportunity to ensure everything has been entered correctly.

Please visit parishcensus.com/oloh to update or confirm your information by Wednesday, October 6. If you need help logging in, please email the parish office at [email protected].

Jennifer Badolato has dedicated 10 years to the Our Lady of Hope Religious Education program. She was a 7th grade Aide for 7 years and an 8th grade Catechist for 3 years. Her children Gina and Julia are alumni of the program, and Leo will be in the 8th grade RE class this year. A teacher by training and then a stay-at-home mom, Jenn decided to volunteer to increase her knowledge of the faith. She loves teaching 8th grade because the focus is on putting faith into action and taking responsibility for your relationship with God. One of the special projects her students complete is making a Mass journal to reflect on the Gospels and to practice their knowledge of the faith. Jenn encourages everyone to volunteer for Religious Education. “It’s so worth it! You get ten-fold back what you put into it. Don’t worry if you don’t feel you know enough to teach. There will be times when you won’t know the answer to your student’s questions, and that is ok. The important thing is that you are willing to be there to help them grow in the faith, even as you are still growing yourself.”

Barbara Tyranski started volunteering in religious education in 2004. After working in the corporate world, she found her calling as a math teacher at St. Veronica school in 2010. Her children Declan, Jared, and Jocelyn, all graduates of the OLOH RE program, were instrumental in her decision to volunteer. Storytelling is a teaching technique Barbara uses to help her students live the Bible stories rather than just learn them. Barbara’s parents are instrumental in forming her faith as well as serving as role models of Christian charity. Barbara is also inspired by Fr. Mike Schmitz’s weekly homilies and Bible-in-a-Year podcast. Her advice to new volunteers: “You can start by becoming an aide to see the class structure and teaching methods, prior to becoming a Catechist. It is so rewarding to renew and deepen your faith through teaching God’s precious children.”

As the saints will tell you, "Life with Christ is a wonderful adventure." Maybe the adventure God has planned for you will take you into unknown waters or uncharted space. But you don't have to dive into the depths of the ocean or pay thousands of dollars to travel to space to serve the Lord. He has called you to the greatest adventure of all--living for Christ and "bear[ing] witness to your faith through a life-style inspired by the Gospel." And it all begins right where you are now!

Sharon Murphy radiates the joy of knowing Christ. She is always friendly, optimistic, and ready to serve wherever she is needed. This will be her fourth year as a Religious Education Aide for 6th grade. She is also an offertory counter and member of Ladies of Hope.

A member of Our Lady of Hope since 2009, Sharon is inspired by longtime friend Beth Kennedy and Fr. Saunders. Children may recognize Sharon as a sub for the OLOH School as well as Loudoun County Public Schools. Her advice to those considering volunteering: “Go in with an open mind. I look forward to the weekly classes even during the tough year we had last year. Seeing their faces and smiles makes it all worthwhile.”

Happy Independence Day!

God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty
are your gift to every human being.

Help us to continue a good work begun long ago.

Make our vision clear and our will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth.

Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:
to understand the ways of others,
to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This week we're shining a spotlight on a dynamic duo! Carol Vago and Tom Patton are team catechists in the first grade classroom. They give their time, talent, and treasure planning lessons and purchasing crafts and little prizes for their students. They arrange a church tour every year and their students love seeing the different parts of the church, especially the sacristy and choir loft. Carol and Tom reflect God’s love, and the children know it!

Carol’s warm personality and generosity of spirit exemplifies our religious education volunteers. Her love for little children and the Catholic faith led her to serve for 9 years (and counting) as a 1st grade Catechist. As a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Catechist, Carol is a model of service to others. Mother of three and grandma to four, she has been an OLOH parishioner for 17 years. To those thinking about volunteering, she says, “Do it! It will be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.”

Avid Disney fan and convert since 2012, Tom lives out his vocation as Brenda’s husband and as father of Connor, Duncan, and Belle. All of their children are alumni of the Religious Education program at Our Lady of Hope. As a 1st grade Catechist for seven years, Tom works closely with Carol to give their students the best experience in faith formation. Tom’s optimism, encouragement, and attention to detail help the students become more than just a class, they become friends. He loves when his former students see him in church and stop by to say hello, so don’t be shy! To those thinking about helping out with Religious Education, Tom’s advice is, “Do it, you won’t regret it.”

We've reached the final day of #ReligiousFreedomWeek, but speaking out and defending religious freedom doesn't end today!

🙏 Pray that Christians will have the courage to speak the truth with kindness and clarity, even in the face of adversity.

One of the promises of our country is that many voices, even voices expressing minority views, have a right to express themselves.

Is that promise being fulfilled?

Just this year, a book on problems with gender ideology by a prominent commentator was removed from Amazon. A Catholic news outlet had its Twitter account suspended for noting that a government official who claims to be a transgender woman is a biological male. While these companies may have a right to control the materials they help to distribute, it is disturbing that the views of some can be protected from scrutiny, particularly when these views do not promote human flourishing.

On the feast day of two of our boldest preachers of the gospel, Sts. Peter and Paul, who faced intense hostility, let us resolve to have the courage to speak the truth with grace. And let us pray that the Lord will give us the prudence to be creative and compassionate in our witness.
