Testimony of God’s Miracles

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home. In fact, I grew up, by American standards, in an underprivileged home, drugs and alcohol were a normal part of our lifestyle. God was never spoken of, and I didn’t know Jesus at all. I was told at some point that Jesus died on a cross for our sins and that was about all I knew of Him.

In 2007, I deployed to Iraq, assigned to an infantry unit as a combat medic. We would conduct multiple missions a day and were engaged by the enemy (Iraqis) nearly everyday. Up until that point in my life, I never felt a real need from God.

Being deployed, out of necessity, I prayed everyday. I didn’t really know who I was praying to. I suppose, I was praying to my maker to save me, and the men in my platoon from the dangers of the day. I became more grateful for the small pleasures in life, like food. I was even starting to say grace before meals.

When I got back to the states, I sought out for God. I didn’t have much support from my wife at the time, so that was very short lived. After attending church only one time, I lived a very sin filled life, constantly filling my spiritual void with alcohol and anything else on the earth to bring me temporary happiness. I had a very skewed way of thinking. My line of thinking was, if I don’t know you, I don’t like you, type attitude.

I am an introvert by nature based on fear and rejection. I was very selfish, in a sense, I would never ask anyone for help with anything with the expectation that people wouldn’t ask me for help with anything. My mind was poisoned with worldly reasoning and logic.

In November 2016, I was diagnosed with stage 4-b non-Hodgkin's T-cell Lymphoma, a very rare and aggressive cancer. I was informed, I would have less than a year to live, that the cancer had already affected my liver, lungs, pancreas, left eye and had visible enlarged lymph nodes on my right axilla. There was no time to waste. So they started me on chemo right away.

The rounds of chemo consisted of me being inpatient at the hospital approximately 5 consecutive days each month with aggressive chemotherapy treatments. It even was reaching my eye. Which ment, I had to get 2 epidural chemo shots during each round of chemo to allow it to reach my brain. I was to receive at minimum 6 rounds and up to 8 rounds if necessary.

With the aggressiveness of the chemo and the devastation it was doing in my body, I had to have 3 blood draws each week. Even with the extreme monitoring I still contracted 2 blood infections, which landed me in the ICU both times and an extra 2 weeks in the hospital each time. These are just a few things I went through, not to mention the torment on my family and many other obstacles.

I was also informed that with this type of cancer, the probability of recurrence is extremely high. Doing some research on my own I found there are some people, with the same form of cancer, that have to receive maintenance chemo for the rest of their life.

My doctor highly suggested I do a stem cell transplant, which is a very risky procedure. The recovery mainly would mean many more months in the hospital. It was explained to me “it’s like rebooting your immune system.” I was told that this procedure would reduce the chance of recurrence by a substantial amount, but I had to be in complete remission in order to have it done. So, I agreed to it.

Rewind to a month after my diagnosis, I gave more thought to God. My girlfriend, who was incredibly supportive, helped me pick out a church. She not only didn’t give God any thought, but was completely against Christianity. Yet she went with me to this small little baptist church. We went on Wednesday night. We liked the Church, so we attended regularly. I started reading the Bible a little. Still, I hadn’t committed myself to Christ.

After my 4th round of chemo, things began looking up. The symptoms of the cancer were gone, just real sick from the chemo. So, the doctor decided to do another PET scan to see how far along I was, and the results came back negative, clean of any cancer. They took an MRI of my brain and eye. That too, came back negative.

Even though I was in complete remission, my doctor thought it necessary to do one more round of chemo, because...
1.) It was standard to at least have 6 rounds of chemo for this particular regime and I had only done 4 up to that point.
2.) The doctor said to put me in a “deeper remission”, prior to the stem cell transplant.

Hesitantly, I said yes. This would mean another 5 days in the hospital, 2 more shots in the back and the high chance of another blood infection.
Two weeks later, after my 5th and final round of chemo, I noticed a painful lump in my left groin area. I didn’t think too much of it, but it began to grow, then small bumps started to form in my lower abdomen. Then, two weeks later and just 1 month after my final round of chemo, I contracted a mild fever. After waiting a few days I made the dreaded trip to the E.R.

They drew a set of blood cultures, to rule out blood infection. They did a needle aspiration on the lump in my groin to rule out an abscess. Multiple attempts of trying to draw out fluid from the lump, only a small amount of blood was extracted. There was nothing to prove any kind of infection, but they sent me home with a 10 day supply of antibiotics. This was on a Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the very next day, I had a scheduled appointment with the stem cell transplant doctors. Still feverish, I explained to them everything that happened and there was talk of the cancer coming back. It was at that moment that I knew the cancer had come back and only a month after my last round of chemo.

I was so certain it had come back, recalling how I felt “physically” prior to the initial diagnosis. I could barely even concentrate on what the doctors were even saying at this point, I was so overwhelmed with fear and the prospect of death lurking just around the corner. Still feeling the effects of the chemo, very low energy and complete hair loss from head to toe. I knew I wouldn’t be able to survive the chemotherapy again. I knew the aggressiveness of the cancer.

The stem cell transplant doctors wanted to do another PET scan the following day, on Friday, to see if, in fact, it was the cancer that had come back, but I was already convinced. The symptoms I were feeling were all too familiar.

That was a very long hour and 45 minute drive home. I crawled in bed and was so afraid of dying I began to cry, which my wife had never seen up to that point. I’m not known as a crier. I cried first out of self pity, and then, I cried out to the Lord.

I surrendered myself completely with complete humility with no reservations. It was at that point, God, our loving Father gave me an overwhelming warm feeling, a sense of peace came upon me, like a Father embracing and comforting His child in need. My tears and that feeling of doom were gone. I still didn’t know whether or not I would live or die. I only knew that God was carrying me and that everything was going to be ok, one way or the other.

So, the next day I went in for the PET scan to see if it was the cancer or not, all the while, I am still convinced it was the cancer and yet still had that overwhelming sense of Peace from God.

Monday, I had an appt. with my Oncologist. He examined the lump in my groin, which was now very bruised from the needle aspiration, and explained very matter of factly that the needle aspiration was not necessary. And that just based on appearance alone was evidence enough that my cancer had come back. He also told me I could stop the 10 day antibiotic regimen the ER had put me on just four days prior.

Wednesday, a week from the ER visit, my Oncologist called me up and explained that the results of the PET scan shows that the cancer has come back and considering the aggressive nature of this cancer, he explained that I needed to put in a new port that Friday and on Monday start chemo.

The last Port had to be removed just after my last round of chemo because I contracted a blood infection which landed me in the ICU. After he told me this over the phone, I smiled for just a bit. God gave me another sign that I was going to be ok.

Just the day before Tuesday, the fevers I was having just went away. I told him that I would no longer be needing his services and that I’m putting my faith in Jesus!

My Oncologist, who has been in the field many years, pleaded with me to reconsider my decision. He explained that I would die without treatment. My wife, Dad, and sister pleaded with me to go through the chemo. They thought I was “crazy” and that I had given up and in a sense I did. I had given my life over to Jesus.

Over the course of about six days the lump in my groin was completely GONE! The stem cell transplant people followed up with me two weeks later to see how I was doing and I was able to let them know how amazing Jesus is and His power to heal!

They weren’t very convinced, so they asked if I would agree to another PET scan a month from the last PET scan that showed that the cancer had come back. Wanting to prove how incredibly loving our God is, I agreed.

While I was at the hospital to get the PET scan, I had the same nurse as before. He remembered me and explained to me that the doctor that looked at the last scan, just one month ago said, “His cancer has come back with a vengeance.” So, the nurse was very curious to see the results of this next test, as was the doctor I’m sure.

A few days later results came back and confirmed the amazing healing power of Jesus! The cancer was completely gone, no trace of any cancer at all. The stem cell transplant people wanted me to still go through with the transplant and I told them that God’s grace was sufficient.

So, here I am, one year later with no transplant and cancer, living off God’s grace growing stronger in the Lord each and every day. God has recently revealed to me that man can’t do what He can do. With all the technology we have in this day and age, man put me in remission for a very brief period of time, one month to be exact, but Jesus doesn’t do remission, He heals and heals completely. I never have to worry about T-cell Lymphoma ever again. He is faithful.
