Our Director caught this stunning video of Odin and Frigga attached at the hip (as usual). 😍
Garuda Aviary is a lifelong sanctuary for abused, abandoned and neglected companion parrots. At Garuda, unlike other shelters, we specialize in a very difficult, neurotic and traumatized population of birds, as a result of their tragic past abuse and neglect.

- VISITING HOURS - (weather permitting) Monday - closed Tuesday - closed Wednesday - 1pm-5pm Thursday - closed Friday - 1pm-5pm Saturday - 1pm-5pm Sunday -1pm-5pm Visiting means seeing the birds in their outdoor flight cage. So, “weather permitting” isn’t just about cold or rain. These days, it’s also about excessive heat. When the heat index is high, being outside can be very stressful for the birds so there may be a rare occasion when a high heat index does happen and therefore the Aviary may not be open. - DONATE - Your support really makes a difference in how much we can do for our Birds. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) Garuda Aviary relies solely on the generosity of our donors to keep our sanctuary up and running. It is very expensive to run a lifelong sanctuary. We have ongoing expenses for food (including fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, nuts and seeds) water, electricity, salary, building and grounds maintenance, plus other expenses. For example: It takes an average of $19 just to feed one bird per month and It takes an average of $55 for full care per bird per month, including food, electricity, building maintenance and our caretaker’s salary. We currently care for over 50 birds. To donate online, please visit www.garudaaviary.org and click on 'Contribute'. To send your contribution by mail, please make your check or money order payable to “Garuda Aviary” and mail to: Garuda Aviary 18400 River Road, Poolesville, Maryland 20837 - VOLUNTEER PROCESS - Volunteering at Garuda Aviary looks something like this: Everything starts in the kitchen. Because of the traumas our parrots have experienced from their previous owners, they can be timid, even fearful of new people. Working in the kitchen allows most of our flock to see you and become accustomed to your appearance. While in the kitchen, you will learn about parrot diet and nutrition – what foods they should eat, what foods they shouldn’t eat and why. You will help in preparing the flock’s food. As the flock becomes more familiar with your appearance, you may assist in feeding the parrots. All of this activity occurs under the supervision of Garuda Aviary’s Director of Avian Care. For more information, please visit www.garudaaviary.org and click on 'Volunteer'. If the opportunity to help these parrots appeals to you and if you’re 18 years old or older, please contact us. Not sure about volunteering? Come and visit the parrots at their outdoor flight cage on Sundays between 1:00pm and 6:00pm when the weather is nice, and chat with our Director of Avian Care.
