Why Pastors Are Stepping Down – and What Congregations Can Do to Help

This has been a tough year for pastors. If you'd like to know how to support them, I encourage you to reflect on this insightful article and discuss it with key leaders in your church.

July 10, 2019. That’s the date when LifeWay Research ran an article entitled, “Pastors Are Not Quitting in Droves”. Two years ago, they weren’t quitting in droves. Their research showed that previous statistics of 1500 pastors per month quitting...

Safely reopening California

California is moving Beyond the Blueprint to safely and fully reopen the economy.

As of June 15, 2021, the Governor terminated the executive orders that put into place the Stay Home Order and the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. He also phased out the vast majority of executive actions put in place since March 2020 as part of the pandemic response, leaving a subset of provisions that facilitate the ongoing recovery.

The new public health order effective June 15 supersedes all prior health orders. The order has limited restrictions, only related to masking and mega-events, as well as settings serving children and youth pending an expected update to the K-12 schools guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Restrictions that ended on June 15 include:
- Physical distancing
- Capacity limits on businesses
- County tier system

https://covid19.ca.gov/safely-reopening/

Thanks to your trust in the vaccine and falling transmission rates, California has fully reopened its economy. This means no more physical distancing, no capacity limits, no county tiers, and relaxed mask guidance. On this page: Reopening California Continuing safety measures County risk level map o...

The Church of the Nazarene has ordained women since our earliest days.

The Church of the Nazarene’s first female district superintendent was Rev. Elsie Wallace, who was appointed by general superintendent John Goodwin to lead the Northwest District in early1920.

She was the first woman ordained to the ministry by Phineas Bresee. This occurred in 1902.

Wallace was the Northwest District's outstanding minister throughout its first quarter-century (1904-1929). She was founding pastor of Spokane First Church (1902) and Walla Walla First Church. She was a key organizer of the early Nazarene congregations in Garfield, Wash.; Ashland, Ore.; and Boise, Id.; and she was an early pastor of Seattle First Church. Over the years, she was hailed repeatedly as "the mother of the district."

Her husband, Rev. DeLance Wallace, was a railway executive who served as the district's second superintendent. DeLance was never a full-time clergyman. In fact, he was ordained to the ministry specifically so he could be district superintendent. His position with the railroad allowed him to travel freely throughout Washington and Oregon. This was a great benefit at a time when the district was poor. He conducted railroad business during the day, and met with church boards in the evenings. It was Elsie, not her husband, who was the full-time minister in the family.

After DeLance stepped down as district superintendent, the office was filled by C. Warren Jones for a few years. Then Jones resigned between district assemblies, expecting to go to Japan as a missionary. Elsie Wallace was appointed district superintendent and completed the remainder of the term—approximately four months.

As the district’s most prominent pastor, the district would undoubtedly have elected her to continue in that office, but DeLance had already been elected manager of the Nazarene Publishing House and moved to Kansas City. Elsie remained in the Northwest until the district assembly was held, then she joined her husband in Kansas City.

Alas. DeLance Wallace’s tenure at Nazarene Publishing House only lasted about 18 months. Despite his business background, he could not turn around the struggling financial situation. The Wallaces were back in the Northwest within two years of leaving it.

Elsie Wallace became pastor of Seattle First Church a second time, and then she spent eight years as the district evangelist.

Later she moved to California, where she enjoyed three pastorates. She retired there in 1941, nearly completing four decades of full-time ministry. She died in Pasadena, California, in 1946.

The photograph shows DeLance and Elsie Wallace.

Hello NorCal Family!

We have some great news! After more than a year of pastoral transition (during a pandemic, no less), we are happy to announce that Christ Community Church of the Nazarene has called Rev. Dave Myers as their next lead pastor. Pastor Dave, his wife Julia, and their children will be moving to NorCal during the summer.

Many of you know the Myers family already. Pastor Dave served as an associate and lead pastor at Hillside Community in Petaluma for 11 years. Most recently, he served as Pastor of Family Life at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene on the Los Angeles District.

Pastor Dave is passionate about helping the local church envision itself as the embodiment of the kingdom of God in its community. He is a Pennsylvania native with a business degree from Grove City College (PA) and an MDiv from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He has been an ordained elder since 2008.

Dave and Julia (a California girl) have been married for 11 years and have 3 children. Together, they have served as foster parents and look forward to supporting this work in the future. Julia is a talented creative with a heart full of empathy and a mind full of new ideas. She is a force for healing and justice in the world around her.

Please join us in welcoming (back) the Myers family to the NorCal District!

Six Pivots for the Church in a Post-Christian World

The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the least church-going populations of any place in the United States. 61% of our neighbors have not attended a church service at any time within the past six months, compared to the national average of 38%. We have the highest percentage of “de-churched” people. 48% have been exposed to church but made a conscious decision to stop attending. 14% of our neighbors are “never-churched.” The majority of our churches are getting older and smaller. We are seeing a mass exodus of young people from Christianity. There are over 112 languages spoken in the Bay Area.

Most of our pastors were not trained and our churches were not designed for this kind of mission field. For our churches to be healthy and fruitful, we're going to have to make at least six key pivots.

*We Unite in Prayer*

Our God, we pray for children, rescued from online sexual exploitation, who now live at the Shechem Home, a Nazarene assessment center in the Philippines. Give these children Your help, healing, and hope. May they begin to again feel safe. Give strength and wisdom to their house parents, counselors, and teachers. Protect each child and bring those who took advantage of them to justice and full repentance. Amen.

Being a Credible Witness

What do our neighbors say about us? Can they tell that we are Christians by the way we live? It’s not enough to know the gospel, or even to preach the gospel, if we don’t also embody the gospel. How do we become credible witnesses of the good news that Jesus is making all things new; that through Jesus, we can be reconciled to God and to each other?

What is Our Vision?

What is the vision of the NorCal District Church of the Nazarene? Check out the latest video from our channel, "As in Heaven."

From beginning to end, the Bible is clear: God created us, every one of us, to share in His life and work. God is a loving Father that wants His children to participate in the family business, which is to make all things new through Christ. To restore all people to right and loving relationship with God and each other through Christ. To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. To bring heaven to earth. This is God’s vision for humanity.

i was truly blessed attending the Distrist Assembly 2019. Thank you so much District team, The Point Church, all of the Pastors, Worship teams, and everyone that made the event a success. You are all AWESOME! Great is our God and I look forward to what He is going to do in our lives, "AS IN HEAVEN".
We had our first Sunday walking about the city during church. Almost everybody came for that except one man who thought that it smacked of being like the J.W's. All in all, it went well. People received us well and we got to pray for a few of them too. Handed out a simple flyer to invite them to church, and smiled and asked for their prayer needs. It's a step. Don't know what will come of this, but God willing it will blossom.
