Things to Come in the California Theatre

Pittsburg Community Theatre is proud to be the Resident Theatre Company at the California Theatre. We are grateful for the support of the City of Pittsburg as we continue to produce quality productions while maintaining reasonable ticket prices. Similarly, we support the City's efforts to maintain the California Theatre as a quality venue for all of us to enjoy.

Plans to upgrade the theatre were recently bolstered by a generous grant received by the Pittsburg Arts and Community Foundation. The grant will fund the completion of the balcony, repair some lighting deficiencies, and enable other improvements. Scheduled to begin in early 2021, construction will take approximately 6-9 months.

Until construction is completed, all scheduled shows at the California Theatre are cancelled. If you have tickets and you have not already received a refund, you should receive it soon. Contra Costa County regulations are currently in flux, but were up to 50 people outdoors with all social distancing protocols in place. If all goes well, we will present a special outdoor production of "Company" at John Buckley Square in Old Town Pittsburg in April of 2021.

As for indoor productions, we considered taking these shows elsewhere, but we do not expect indoor COVID restrictions to be lifted by spring 2021. Even Broadway is now thinking September 2021 is the earliest time they can turn the lights back on. Let's hope a vaccine is available soon so we kick this virus into remission.

Once the improvements to the California Theatre are completed, we hope to participate in the Grand Re-Opening of the theatre in the fall, and to present "The Addams Family" in October to open our 2021-2022 season. We will provide more information on that early in 2021.

Of course, all of this scheduling will be contingent of the lifting of pandemic restrictions for indoor performances. Meanwhile, please stay safe and healthy. We hope that the pandemic does not worsen over the winter and that restrictions are lifted, or relaxed, in the spring for indoor performances. PCT takes all health and safety guidelines seriously, and we will continue to protect our patrons, performers, and staff.

Rest assured that PCT is not going away. In 41 years, we have experienced our highs and lows, but we are committed and dedicated, and we can't wait to get back into the theatre.

We thank you for your continued support, and we have one final request. Please consider a gift to Pittsburg Community Theatre. Your donation will help with our ongoing expenses, such as insurance and warehouse rent, that we still must pay without the benefit of ticket income. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Gioia Stark

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are asking for your help to fund the Betty Brown Performing Arts Scholarship program.

Betty Brown founded Pittsburg Community Theatre in 1973 and she remained its guiding light throughout the rest of her life. During her tenure, PCT awarded scholarships to local students in every year of its incorporation, totaling over 40 scholarships. Now, in her memory, PCT continues to provide scholarships to students in her name. Our recent scholarship recipients include Melissa Marie (2018), Roxy Renner (2020), Kylie Ward (2020), and Nayeli Roman (2020). PCT also hopes to expand the scholarship program in the future to provide technical scholarships to students who work on our shows as light and sound techs or stage manager.

Please consider gifting the Betty Brown Performing Arts Scholarship fund. In honoring Betty's memory, you will also be helping students continue their performing arts education.

Your tax-deductible gift may be sent to:

Midnight Madness:
Set on Halloween night in 1939, Jamie and Erin’s mother went out for the evening. They have been told not to listen to the radio, but of course they do. They tune in “Midnight Madness,” a mystery theater radio show. As they listen, events occur which seemingly bring the story to life. So does fantasy becomes reality? You decide.

Great Job PCT !! and the Raisin in the Sun production was a success.
Present by Pittsburg Community Theatre A RAISIN IN THE SUN “A Raisin in the Sun” tells the story of the Younger family’s struggle for dignity and a better life, and the backlash that erupts when they try to move beyond their oppressive Chicago tenement home. The tensions and prejudice they face form this ground-breaking American drama, and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world.
Betty Gregg, Pittsburg Community Theatre’s “Spot Light” award recipient!
Oh what fun!
Happy 40th Anniversary PCT! I know that April 9, 1979 is the date of PCT's incorporation. I know this because the very first show I ever directed, "Baby", opened on April 9, 2004, PCT's 25th Anniversary. Thanks PCT for giving me my first opportunity to direct. Since that date 15 years ago, I have directed more than 25 productions. I will always be grateful to the company for their trust in me then.
Bravo! to PCT's cast and crew of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. From the very top of the show with the Youth Chorus' beautiful voices to the closing moments with the cast in matching tie-dyed shirts jamming on stage, the show moved at a quick pace and had the audience's rapt attention throughout. Bobbie Barlow's turn as the Narrator was absolutely wonderful as her full clear voice was perfectly suited to tell us a story. Always a joy to see great character actor Dave Ward add his special take on the roles he plays. The Brothers all played their roles with enthusiasm and sounded especially powerful when singing as a group. Of course the beginning of the second act was stolen by none other than "Pharaoh" himself Lou Esposito II. Lou always has a way to make a character his own while still referencing the source material. Kudos to you brother! Hats off to Choreographer Chelsea Bardelinni and her fabulous Ensemble of chorus boys and girls; all of which looked like they were having so much fun performing that the feeling absolutely spilled over the footlights right into the audiences laps. (as an old Gypsy myself may I make one suggestion? During the dance numbers you LOOKED like you were having fun…but we couldn't HEAR that you were having fun…let's hear some whooping and hollerin during your hoedown for example) But really what would this show be without your lead, Joseph? Luke Cannon, where have you and your wonderful talent been all of PCT's life? This young man was simply sublime in the role. The audience could hear every word of his perfectly pitched voice for the duration of the show. No easy feat when you have to sing for almost two hours straight. He connected with the audience at the appropriate times and had us fully engaged with his plaintive version of "Close Every Door" (is that a tear in my eye?). I do hope we get to see more of his talent in the CA Theatre in the future. The minimal sets were effective and provided ample room for the entire cast to be on stage at once. Oh did I mention we're talking a cast of 40+??? Also a VERY special high five to the costume designers. Those second act Egyptian motif costumes were awesome; colorful, sparkly and appropriate (loved the head-dresses). Hello Shellies? Any minor quibbles could be chalked up to opening night jitters and that pesky sound system PCT is so well known for. The company has done themselves proud with their latest iteration. Thank you Director Keith W. Barlow, Cast, Crew, and company for continuing to VOLUNTARILY bringing quality arts to the City of Pittsburg. STANDING O !!!
Excellent closing show yesterday. Well done, PCT!!!
Food for thought...
Looking for a video of PCT’s Bye Bye Birdie. I can’t find mine and a fellow director wanted to see it for their production (school production). Can anyone help?
this show is like nothing you've ever seen! you have to visit!
