Something you might not know... OFS is part of a food rescue program. Some food isn't pretty enough for the regular grocery store - like right now Kraft sent us some marshmallows that have a slight green tinge... somebody pressed the wrong button! 😆 Or food that has dates close to 'expiration' - which often doesn't mean anything. (See an earlier post.) Or the label is upside down. Or it wasn't a popular flavor. Or they didn't sell enough Peppermint Mocha Starbucks this winter. (Yes, we have that rn.) Or wherever.

But ALL of our food is good. And it's *very good* that it's not going to waste. Thanks for stopping by and rescuing some each time we're open. You are doing good.

🥚Only farm-fresh organic eggs at OFS! 🥚This means better nutrition, a lot better nutrition... like 3 to 6 times more vitamin D in the eggs because the chickens are in sunlight (unlike commercial chickens) and put that into the eggs.☀️

This also means that the eggs come in pretty pastel colors. And that they last longer because they've never been washed. So yeah that also means, two things with OFS eggs: totally ignore the date on the carton and it might be a good idea to wash them before using. 🍳

What Date Labels Actually Mean
(from Consumer Reports)

With the exception of baby formula, there are no federal regulations on date labeling. Often the “best if used by,” “sell by,” and “use by” designations are just a manufacturer's best guess about how long their food will taste its freshest. Supermarkets may also use the dates as a guide when stocking shelves. But the dates have little to do with how safe the food is.

*Best If Used By/Before.* This guarantees when a product is of the best quality or flavor. For instance, a jar of salsa may not taste as fresh or crackers may be soft instead of crisp after this date. It's not about safety.

*Sell By.* This is the date set by manufacturers to tell retailers when to remove a product from shelves. The goal is to ensure that consumers have products at their best quality, which can be several days to several weeks, depending on the item. For instance, milk, assuming proper refrigeration, should last five to seven days past its sell-by date before turning sour.

*Use By.* This is the last date that guarantees the best quality of a product. This is also not a safety date except when used on infant formula.

According to a report from the NRDC and Harvard University, manufacturers typically use methods such as lab tests and taste-testing to set these label dates. But consumers have no way of knowing the background. In many cases, dates are conservative, so if you eat food past that date, you may not notice any difference in quality, especially if the date has recently passed.

In-person shopping? 🛒
Yes, we think so! Starting February 24th. ☑️

Here’s the plan:
Drive-up open from 5-5:30. Same as now: Drive up along the sidewalk and wait in your car. We’ll take your order and bring it out to you.

Then we’ll quick switch to...
In-person shopping from 5:30-6:30.
Step 1:
Park in a parking spot and wait in your car.
Step 2:
We’ll come get your cell number… or just text a name to (507) 722-0332‬ to be added to the wait list.
Step 3:
We can have 4 people/household groups at tables in the upstairs waiting area. We will text you when it’s time—come in the main, middle door. Gotta wear a mask (over nose/mouth) and sanitize hands. We have extras.
Step 4:
Those in the waiting area upstairs will be invited 2 at a time to shop downstairs. Please shop quickly (10 mins).
Step 5:
We’ll help carry everything out to your car.

The plan **might** change! 🙂

We are open next on Wed Jan 27 from 5-6:30.

You may be wondering was does drive-up at OFS look like? 🚗 It's usually a meal kit of your choice, a bag of fresh, a bag of dairy & frozen, plus any requests (like coffee or laundry). Below are some pics from a couple weeks ago. The meal kits are: Easy Prep, Kid-Friendly, and Healthy Mix. It all adds up to about 75 pounds of good stuff, more if your family is larger.

Once we open up to in-person shopping the selection opens waaay up too. Hoping to do that soon! 🤞 Drive up will still be an option too.

This year Oronoco-ans have come together around OFS in a way that reflects the heart of our warm community. And we are thankful. Food shelves are anchors in our society - a place to be a good neighbor and a place to get a boost when needed. Right now it's more important than ever.

A new nationally representative survey by Consumer Reports finds that about 1 in 5 American grocery shoppers (19 percent) have used a food pantry, food bank, or community food distribution at some point since the pandemic began. What's more, about half of them said they didn't use these food programs in the year leading up to the COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S.
