Press Release: St. Nicholas Project Gears Up For 2021 Holiday Season

After what can only be described as a challenging year, the St. Nicholas Project is gearing up for the 2021 holiday season.

We are extremely pleased to report that, even though we had to make some significant changes to the project last year, our outcome for 2020 was still very successful. The Project served 205 families, 133 children and 21 adult foster care clients. We were able to provide food vouchers for each family, gift cards for parents to purchase gifts for all of the children, and gift cards for the adult foster care clients and our elderly population who might not have otherwise received a gift for Christmas.

Unfortunately, with the resurgence of the Covid 19/Delta virus, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our normal distribution day activities and repeat with last years changes dealing only with food vouchers and gift cards. Applications for assistance can be found at the following locations and must be returned by October 15th.

Ontonagon: Lake Superior Credit Union, Citizens State Bank, Miners State Bank, Ontonagon County Courthouse, Township Library, Laundromat, Pat’s Foods, U-Save,
Ontonagon Village Housing and St Vincent DePaul Store (they can also be dropped off here)

Rockland: Rockland Depot

Mass City: Merritt’s Travel Center, Harvest Country Market

Bruce Crossing: Settler’s Federal Credit Union, Settler’s Co-Op

White Pine: Konteka

Ewen-Trout Creek: ETC School, Cloverland Senior Center, Gogebic Range Bank

Bergland: Bergland Senior Center, Gogebic Range Bank

Our success is always made possible by the generosity of our north and south end business communities, organizations and county residents. Once again, we are seeking your support for the upcoming 2021 holiday season. If you would normally take a gift tag from the toy tag trees, we hope you will consider making a monetary donation to be used towards gift cards. If you are able to donate, please send your check to

The St. Nicholas Project
PO Box 72
Ontonagon, MI 49953

Donation envelopes will be available on Christmas trees located at the Citizens State Bank, Miners State Bank, Lake Superior Credit Union and the St. Vincent DePaul Store in Ontonagon and at Settlers Co-op in Bruce Crossing. As a result of increased postage, we will not be sending out thank you/receipts unless specifically requested.

Applications and donations can be dropped off at the St. Vincent DePaul Store in Ontonagon. We are also working towards getting a PayPal account for on-line donations. Please watch for further information on this.

We thank you in advance for your support.

Press Release from Jan Tucker:
ONTONAGON -
It may be hot and 80 degrees in Ontonagon County, but the St, Nicholas Project group is already looking at Christmas and the work to see that no one is left behind for the holidays.
The St. Nicholas Project committee met and began plans for gathering the names of people who will be at long care facilities, alone, or without gifts this Christmas. The theme for this year is "A season of hope," and right after labor day, the SNP committee will be announcing the sites where people can get referral forms and where electronic forms will also be available.
The group decided that in order to keep everyone safe, they will again do mail distribution of gift and food cards instead of the pick up at all distribution sites. The SNP committee consists of members from all areas of Ontonagon County. Members said because of the COVID situation many groups which normally hold special events to raise funds for the project are unable to do so this year. "We need funds to carry out our mission," Kathy Bauer, Co - Chairman of the Project said. Donations can be mailed to St. Nicholas Project, PO Box 72, Ontonagon, Mi. 49953.
"Our fondest prayer is that we can make this years holidays a "season of Hope" for everyone," Bauer added.
