LSSC’s By-Laws: Some time ago, the Board had approved additional language changes to the By-laws. However, due to the lack of Annual Meetings, these wording changes were never brought up for a general membership vote. The Board is now looking into voting on these via email (and by USPS for those few members that don’t have email). These wording changes have to do with Notice of the Annual Meeting, and the Fiscal Year (FY). Only members at the time will be eligible to vote. C Mott has found an online site for electronic voting that appears to be quite promising for our purposes.

Note: No board meeting is scheduled for November.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tue, 7Dec21 at 6PM. This meeting will be held at the Carp Lake Twp Hall, White Pine.

25Sep21 Hi members, friends, and interested parties,
QUICK NEWS/UPDATES: THERE ARE A NUMBER OF VERY IMPORTANT UPDATES BELOW; PLEASE READ!

VISION PROJECT – NEWS FLASH!!!
Great news! Lori Burford (our DNR contact) said the Pittman-Robertson Grant funding for the new facilities was recently officially approved by the USFWS!! It’s only been 11 years or more since we started on this journey!! Currently the DNR is looking at whether or not they need to rebid the project due to the time lag w/possible price changes. They expect to determine that within the next two weeks. Stay tuned!

TRAP SHOOTING – 6:00 pm. Public is invited. Note: Trap shooting is scheduled to end next Thursday, 30Sep.

OUTDOOR RANGES – Open for use as weather permits.

INDOOR PISTOL RANGE – Scheduled to begin, Thursday, 14Oct, at 6:30 pm. Then each Thu (except holidays), same time. Public is invited. Note: Use west side entry (due to badly broken concrete on east side.

21Sep21 BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:
Vision update: Walt gave a short update on our project status; see NEWS FLASH above! Great news!

Donation’s update: Walt reported that he has received a couple of donations since his last mailing to the DNR. These have been/or will be deposited in LSSC’s local account. At some point, Walt will mail these (and any others) to the DNR as well.

It’s important to note that all donations to the DNR will be held in a special account earmarked for this LSSC range improvement project. Also, all of these funds will be subject to the Pittman-Robertson matching funds ratio, currently at 10:1! Any funds not used in Phase 1, the indoor facilities and shooting range, will be held for the next Phases (outdoor range improvements). If, for some reason, the project fails to materialize, the original donations would be returned to LSSC.

We wish to give a special thanks to all of the persons, businesses, etc., that have donated time, money, goods, & services, both past and present, in response to our various fund-raising efforts. We very much appreciate your interest and support. Without your dedication, none of this would have been possible.

Just a reminder: the Pittman-Robertson Act is a federal program that that places an excise tax on fi****ms, ammunition and the like. This money is then given to the States in the form of grants to be used for things like hunter safety, shooting range development, etc. The States have to put up “matching funds” in the form of a ratio to Federal funds received. In 2019, the P-R grant funding ratio was changed from 1:4 to 1:10; a highly favorable change. So, now may the time to consider a donation. For every $1,000 donated, at the current 1:10 ratio, the project sees $10,000! To illustrate and fully appreciate the ratio change, at the older 1:4 ratio the project would have seen $4,000 for each $1,000 donated.

United States Concealed Carry Association (USSCCA) Update: Not too long ago, LSSC had become an “Affiliate” of the USSCA; a rather simple process. Recently we learned that the USSCA is discontinuing their “Affiliate” program and offered in place a “Partnership” program. There was considerable discussion on this topic. The “Partnership” program is much more complicated and leaves too many unknowns for the present. It was decided to table this for now and to review it again at a later date.

Annual Meeting: Walt pointed out that we have not had an Annual Meeting for two years now, 2020 & 2021, due to COVID restriction uncertainties, and that we should make every effort to have one in 2022. We need to have “official” board members (all Officers & Directors), as well as the other usual business. The date would be Sat, 7May22. Walt asked for volunteers to begin looking for a place to have this meeting and reviewed some criteria which we would require. Marcus & Cindy Bierman graciously volunteered to take on this task; that is very much appreciated. Please feel free to contact Marc or Cindy at 885.5345 with your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas.

Hunter Safety Instructor: Charles Mott (Secretary) expressed interest in becoming a Hunter Safety Instructor. He and Walt will work together to see how we can accomplish this. If anyone else is, or wishes to be, a H S Instructor, please contact me (885.5334).

Range Safety Officers: Walt would still like to do an NRA RSO course if/as time permits. It was pointed out that both the USCCA and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) offer RSO training and these might be alternatives to look into; however, the extent of their recognition is unknown at this point.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tue, 19Oct21 at 6PM. This meeting will be held at the Carp Lake Twp Hall, White Pine.

Bachelorette Party, News

On Saturday, 28Aug21, LSSC hosted what is likely a first for them; a Bachelorette Party! We received a request for this event and were able to accommodate the group. Their group consisted of 5 ladies: Natalie (organizer), Jena (bride-to-be), Alexis, Mackenzie, and Hadley. All received an overview of LSSC, range procedures, and safe gun handling instructions. The first three then did the shooting.

They shot a variety of .22 pistols and rifles on our indoor range and did well. Jena had brought a shotgun she wanted to try so we patterned that on the outdoor shotgun range, using paper on the rifle target board. A good time was had by all.

I want to thank the ladies for coming and for their donation; also, Dan Castle for assisting me on the range, and Rick Tessmer for range/facilities preparations.

LSSC hopes to have many assorted group events in the future; especially after the new facilities become available.

Is this something we should be considering?
Any thoughts on Ontonagon County becoming a 2nd. Amendment Sanctuary? It is being brought up at the Houghton county board meeting coming up. Maybe it is time we consider it also? Our Michigan legislature is looking more and more like Virginia's.
31Mar19 Hi members, friends, and interested parties, QUICK NEWS/UPDATES: VISION PROJECT – NEW FACILITIES FUND RAISER – I submitted all of our donation/pledge estimates to Lori (MI DNR coordinator on this project) on Mon, 25Mar. She is in the process of submitting the grant applications for additional project funding. It appears, pending any changes from the granting sources, that we will have enough for at least a 7-lane shooting facility. A special thanks to all that contributed in one way or another; LSSC really appreciates that! These are exciting times – stay tuned. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments: [email protected] or 906.885.5334 HISTORIC FI****MS FUND-RAISING RAFFLE – LSSC is conducting our first fi****ms raffle for 2019. This raffle is unique from previous raffles as it features four (4) historic fi****ms which were donated to LSSC to be raffled as a fund raiser for the new clubhouse/indoor shooting range complex. Don’t miss this chance; you probably won’t see an opportunity like this again. Please see the attachments for the raffle details. One attachment is a flyer. The other attachment is two pages; the first provides greater detail, and the second, larger pix, of the fi****ms offered.
