Sending a big thanks to ACLU of Maryland, Montgomery County Chapter and Takoma Park Mobilization for sponsoring last night’s event. We had a great turn out from the community and can’t wait for all the good things to come!

EVENT TONIGHT: “Breaking Down Barriers: Re-entry in our Community.” Kicking things off with screening of One by 1 Inc.’s Eddie Ellis’ “Out for Good.”

Every year, 700,000 people are released from prison across the country. 2/3 are attested within 3 years (Urban Institute, 2008). So many challenges facing those who are returning to their communities. #Reentry Takoma Park Mobilization

Why Are American Prisons So Afraid of This Book?

"Black people are still imprisoned at over five times the rate of white people"

This is not a coincidence, and Michelle Alexander's book tells us why. So why are prisons banning it?

“The New Jim Crow,” a best-selling book about how mass incarceration has ravaged the black community, is banned by prisons in two states and can be difficult to obtain in others.

Doing time far from home, D.C. prisoners face extra barriers to rehabilitation

“It’s unfair...They’re sending us all over the country. It’s a strain on everything.” - Eddie Ellis speaking with Washington Post about being incarcerated far from home. This experience is common for DC inmates, and can leave them without the supports and services they need, as well as create barriers to reentry. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/incarcerated-in-federal-prisons-far-from-home-dc-prisoners-face-extra-barriers-to-rehabilitation/2017/12/13/b57d42aa-ca5e-11e7-aa96-54417592cf72_story.html?utm_term=.acbbe131d83b

Even as the city puts more tax dollars toward programming for offenders, federal control of prisoners remains a challenge.

This #tbt we would like to honor Audre Lorde, a poet who utilized her creative talent to address race and gender issues. She specifically advocated for equal treatment of black women. Lorde once said “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”

In the past few years, incarceration rates have been on a steady decline. However, African Americans are still incarcerated at a much higher rate than white offenders. While the movement for equal treatment under the law is gaining momentum, there is still a lot of progress to be made. As an organization, One by 1 is dedicated to ensuring this progress.
