RIP TO A GREAT HERO❤️

RIP TO A GREAT HERO❤️

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Past President and acting Secretary Michael Valente.

A lifelong resident of Ashton, when Mike Valente turned 16, he went to the SSVFD to apply to become a volunteer. He reported that, “I had always wanted to join the fire department and been a strong believer in community involvement. My father was a volunteer at the BCC Rescue Squad, so seeing him serve made me want to give back to the community”.

In 1981, he became a member of the Hazardous Materials Team, which handles chemical emergencies such as petroleum product spills. Fast-forward 41 years later, he continued to serve as Secretary Emeritus on the administrative side of the SSVFD after being President for five years, as well, as Vice President.

He had served both on the administrative and fire side of the department; Valente had worked in every position from Fire Sergeant all the way up to Fire Captain.

In April of 1991, he achieved lifetime status after serving for 10 consecutive years.
In response to his favorite aspect of volunteering, Valente stated that he always enjoyed, “the satisfaction [it] gives, the ability to help mentor new people, and serve as an example for them to follow.”

Due to his dedication to serving the local community, Valente was awarded the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department’s highest honor—the Spencer J.H. Brown Sr. Outstanding Service Award—in 1989 and 2001.

Valente was quoted as saying, “The fire department is a big part of my life; I like seeing the results of my work and I’ve been doing it for so long that I can’t imagine doing anything else”.

SSVFD is eternally grateful for the many years of service and and dedication that Past President and acting Secretary Michael Valente gave. Please join Chief Dinowitz, President Roth, and the Officers of the SSVFD in offering the Valente Family our sincerest condolences from his Fire Department Family.

Here we go Marylanders!

Here we go Marylanders!

With sustained vaccine progress and significant improvements in our key COVID-19 metrics, today I announced that we will be easing certain mitigation measures in our state.

Effective Friday, March 12 at 5 p.m., capacity limits will be lifted on outdoor and indoor dining at restaurants and food service establishments. Bars and restaurants will continue to be open for seated and distanced service only. Capacity limits will also be lifted on retail businesses, religious facilities, fitness centers, casinos, personal services, and indoor recreational establishments. Larger outdoor and indoor venues, including theaters; concert, convention, and wedding venues; racing facilities, and outdoor entertainment and sporting venues may begin operating at 50% capacity.

Maryland’s statewide masking order remains in full force and effect. It applies in the public spaces of all businesses and indoor facilities across the state, on public transportation, and in all outdoor public areas whenever it is not possible to maintain physical distancing.

These steps are made possible because of Marylanders wearing masks, washing their hands, keeping their distance, and following the public health advice, and because our businesses have carefully followed safe reopening practices and public health guidelines.

We need to continue doing the things that can keep us safe, but there can be no doubt that we are closer to the light at the end of the tunnel and a return to some sense of normalcy in our lives. Spring will soon be upon us, and sunnier days are ahead.

Breaking News and it is Terrible! Olney will miss you!

Dear Friends and Patrons,

It is with heavy hearts that we had to close Al Sospiro Trattoria primarily due to the pandemic. While many of you kindly continued to support us in the ways that you were able - we just could not sustain the loss of business and the continued unknown.

We are so grateful to have met and gotten to know so many lovely people and their families since 2007 when we officially opened to the public. What a blessing in every way! We have witnessed dear ones passing and new sweeties being born through our patrons and those of you who have truly become friends. Thank you! Thank you so much for allowing us into your lives! What wonderful communities Olney, Brookeville, Sandy Spring, and its surrounding areas have been. We will miss you all! We sincerely wish you and yours a very Happy and Healthy 2021! Buon Appetito!

And Private Schools WILL be open IN PERSON start of School Year. P.S this is a share, not an opinion

FYI
08/03/2020

FYI

"Governor Larry Hogan today issued an amended emergency order ensuring that local schools retain the primary authority to initially determine when to safely reopen their facilities for in-person instruction based on public health guidance.

Under an order issued April 5, local health departments continue to have the authority to close any individual facility deemed to be unsafe.

After signing the amended order, Governor Hogan issued the following statement:

'The recovery plan for Maryland public schools stresses local flexibility within the parameters set by state officials. Over the last several weeks, school boards and superintendents made their own decisions about how and when to reopen public schools, after consultation with state and local health officials.

'Private and parochial schools deserve the same opportunity and flexibility to make reopening decisions based on public health guidelines. The blanket closure mandate imposed by Montgomery County was overly broad and inconsistent with the powers intended to be delegated to the county health officer.

'To be clear, Maryland’s recovery continues to be based on a flexible, community-based approach that follows science, not politics. As long as schools develop safe and detailed plans that follow CDC and state guidelines, they should be empowered to do what’s best for their community.

'I want to thank all the parents, students, and school administrators who have spoken out in recent days about this important issue.'”
