Our Court Appointed Attorneys Program (CAAP) is accepting applications for our 2022 panel. The deadline to apply is 9/10 at 5PM, don't delay! CAAP administers the conflicts program for the County of Alameda.

Through this program, qualified attorneys represent indigent criminal defendants or minors whenever the public defender is restrained by a conflict of interest. The program maintains a panel of qualified private attorneys who provide professional and excellent representation for those entitled to court appointed attorneys. The First District Court of Appeal in SF upheld Judge Winifred Smith's 2019 order requiring CA to provide medical care, in a hospital or other facility, 28 days after receiving orders to provide treatment because of a court’s finding of incompetence. The Contra Costa Superior Court has issued its Eighth Amended Civil Emergency Local Rules, to be effective June 1, 2021. All Local Rules may be found on our Local Rules webpage.

Effective June 1, 2021, the Civil department will be reopening its courtrooms for hearings, though as noted in the rules, parties are still encouraged to appear remotely. Additionally, revisions to the unlawful detainer, small claims, and harassment sections conform to updated processes. https://www.cc-courts.org/general/local-rules.aspx

Since 2015, Chandler has grown the incubator, which coaches diverse attorneys to build successful, affordable law practices serving low and middle-income clients throughout California. Designed to promote diversity in the legal profession while increasing access to justice, the incubator is a project of the Alameda County Bar Association and Legal Access Alameda. Previously, she helped build a movement to challenge state violence and imprisonment, co-founding several groups influencing the Black Lives Matter network. Her decades long work empowering women in prison to challenge forced sterilization is featured in the Peabody-nominated documentary film “Belly of the Beast.”

Ex-Oakland councilmember, regional parks director John Sutter dies

In memory: Judge John Sutter, a champion of San Francisco Bay Area transit, environmental preservation and open space efforts, died late last week. He was 92.

Born on July 15, 1928, Sutter grew up in Oakland, graduating from Oakland High School, Harvard University and Stanford Law School. He worked as a private attorney before later serving as an Alameda County deputy district attorney and an Alameda County Superior Court judge. In this COVID-19 economy, more than ever, interpreters are among the essential workers that are desperately needed in legal, medical, scholastic and non-profit settings. The Legal and Community Interpreting offers a pathway to a career in professional interpretation to students who are proficient in English and Spanish. Four out of five of the Program's core courses have been approved for online instruction starting in the Fall of 2020. Enrollment is open for the Program's first course, Introduction to Interpretation. Students who have taken previous courses or who enroll in the fist course can also enroll in Simultaneous Interpretation. All courses offer 4 units.
