Our 4th grade class has been reading @roald_dahl ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’. They have also been working with customary units for math, where they learned important measurements like teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fractions of cups, and more! So naturally, they combined these concepts and MADE CHOCOLATE! #charlieandthechocolatefactory #roalddahl #chocolate #mathisfun #happyfriday

This month the Northern Light School community participated in a holiday donation drive benefitting @homiesempowerment and their FREEdom store. They are an incredible organization, making a real impact in the Oakland community. Today we delivered two truckloads of donations directly to their site. Thank you to all our incredible families, faculty, staff and supporters for participating in this important drive. If you’re interested in supporting @homiesempowerment in meeting their goals, please check them out! Most needed items are blankets, coats, diapers (size 6 &7), toiletries, and feminine hygiene products. They also take direct donations via Venmo. Link in bio! #homiesempowerment #ittakesabarrio

Today was our first Impossible is Nothing Luncheon of the 2020-2021 school year! We were honored to host Oakland’s own (and ours, too💕) @tysonross_38 , MLB pitcher! In a socially-distanced setting, our seventh and eighth grade students gathered on the playground to hear Tyson share words of wisdom and love, reminding them to nurture their tenacity and to never forget that “because you go to @northernlightschool, you will know you are special, and always, always loved.” Thank you for this wonderful “homecoming”, Tyson! We love you so.

Since 1995, we have graduated over 200 students. Most of those students have journeyed on to attend and graduate from many prestigious private high schools throughout the Bay Area and across the United States.

At Northern Light School, we stay in touch with each graduate through high school, college and beyond.

About Northern Light School

Since its founding on September 11, 1989, Northern Light School has endeavored to transform student learning through innovative approaches to educating children. As a teacher-powered school, we have established a community of positive expectations and collective responsibility between students, their families and our dedicated educators.

Northern Light School children are encouraged to be compassionate, courageous, confident and creative– four core values of a Northern Light School education, and the four essential traits of both a student and a graduate.

Every day, Northern Light School students are reminded that they are part of a global community that is interdependent and interconnected. Our students understand that they have the potential and the ability to positively impact this world and make it a better place. They know that their actions create consequences– that what they do and how they do it matters. As a result, they believe in the ripple effect created by their actions and they yearn to generate the most positive outcomes for everyone, everywhere.

A rapidly changing global society calls for unique leaders: individuals who are not only intellectual, but who dream, create and invent. Individuals who are not only knowledgable, but empathetic and caring. Individuals who identify challenges and bring to light unique solutions that reflect consideration, kindness and understanding. Children enter our community as curious, yearning pupils, and leave with confidence and assurance, recognizing that their skills and talents can be used to serve the lives of others. Northern Light School graduates know how to think reflectively, self-critically and most importantly, inclusively.

Happy Birthday, Northern Light School. May your journey forward always be guided by brilliant LIGHT.
Science at home! Did you know you can grow new vegetables from vegetable scraps. We are sprouting celery, beets, carrots and green onions from the food we cooked last week. Put them in a shallow dish of water (cut off green tops so you can see new ones sprout). In another week they will go in the ground!
I think we had fun, does it look like it to you?
By not allowing children to be bullied, and punish the student by kicking THEM out of school!
