Storytelling and the Creative Journey to Wellness

ARTogether and Asian Health Services invite you to join a panel discussion on May 26th at 6pm PST with AAPI creatives and clinicians about art and storytelling as tools for #mentalhealth and wellness!

Each of us carries a multitude of stories that define who we are and where we belong—in the world and within our communities. Our stories, in turn, shape the spaces that we move through. With so much happening in the world around us, we may be bombarded with conflicting stories, thoughts and feelings that make it hard for us to connect to the most important stories - our own.

Edward Gunawan "Press Play", Michelle Lin "A House Made of Water" (Sibling Rivalry Press) and Esme Weijun Wang “The Collected Schizophrenias” (Graywolf Press) will share their work in media and literature and discuss the role art and story played in their wellness journeys: and how art can be a tool for mental health and wellness. Jennifer Chen, PsyD (Clinical Supervisor) and Shirley Chen, APCC (Mental Health Counselor) from Asian Health Services will join the conversation and share community resources and wellness practices.

Every May, we celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders’ (AAPIs) innumerable contributions to American history, culture, and society. We honor the AAPI legacy that stretches more than 400 years. In order to truly celebrate and express our appreciation for our AAPI friends, family, neighbors, and leaders, we must acknowledge what the community has faced, endured, and triumphed over, especially during the past year.

This May, let's continue to reflect on all that we can do to change the narrative and improve this country's impact on AAPI lives. Let us honor the full experience of the #AAPI community.

Here's a photo of my Mom's campaign button when she ran in 1970 for the Laguna Salada Elementary School District Board in San Mateo County. My Mom, Anita Heyman, was the first woman elected to the Laguna Salada School Board! I remember campaigning with her as a kid and attending School Board meetings. I'm proud to be following in my Mother's footsteps in running for Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees.

I am happy to announce that I have decided to run for the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees, representing Alameda! I have always been passionate about education (my mom was on the school board when I was kid!) and our community colleges, especially College of Alameda, are real gems. I served at Peralta for more than 18 years and I want to make sure that our colleges are supported properly. Unfortunately, Peralta's board and administration have really dropped the ball on providing the leadership our students need to succeed. Help me reform the Peralta Colleges. I want to hear your ideas on what we need to do to support our students. Let's set up a community Zoom Town Hall to discuss College of Alameda, our students and what to do to improve Peralta. Check out my website at http://www.heyman4students.com and feel free to email me anytime at [email protected]. Thanks for your support and I look forward to your ideas on how we can make our community colleges serve the community better.
