NicaWorks

NicaWorks Creating growth, bringing hope to hard places. The Need: *Nicaragua is the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (only Haiti is poorer) *The rate of under- and unemployment in Nicaragua is 70% *The average working Nicaraguan earns $2/day The Verbo-Nicaragua Development Fund (VNDF) was founded to act as an international advocate for Verbo Ministries, based in Managua, Nicaragua.

We work to raise awareness of, and support for, Verbo's ongoing work to alleviate conditions created by extreme poverty and to provide opportunities that make it possible for Nicaraguans to break the cycle of the intergenerational transmission of poverty (ITP). Verbo Ministries in Nicaragua was established in 1980 by a small team of Americans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans who originally came together as part of a multinational emergency relief response to the Guatemalan earthquake of 1976. Verbo is headed by founder and national director Bob Trolese. Since its inception Verbo has been deeply involved in meeting measurable, real and desperate needs of the Nicaraguan people. Today the ministry encompasses: • 12 churches across Nicaragua with more than 2,000 members • 4 K-12 schools educating more than 1,000 students • 3 orphanages providing care for nearly 200 children ages 2 - 19 • 3 feeding centers that provide nutritious meals for 350 malnourished, at-risk children daily • 6 agricultural projects providing training and employment opportunities for youth and adults in local communities, with a goal of developing highly saleable crops for domestic use and exportation • vocational training programs • youth mentoring program In addition Verbo supports the Samaritan Hospital and Clinic in Managua which provide free and low-cost surgical and medical services and prescription drugs to more than 1,000 low-income and impoverished Nicaraguans every month. Our Vision: To equip impoverished Nicaraguans with the tools, opportunities and encouragement they need to care for themselves, create a better life for their family and contribute to the economic restoration of Nicaragua.

Mission: Providing tangible growth and hope in hard places to alleviate conditions created by the intergenerational transmission of poverty (ITP).

Get the tissues ready.
.
A few months ago we introduced you to Lele - a sweet 10 year old girl who is blind, deaf, mute and severely disabled. Doña Rosa is an elderly widow who took Lele in when her mother abandoned her.
.
This week our field communications specialist @andriumj and his wife Karen visited Lele and Doña Rosa. They brought diapers, wipes, milk and formula for Lele’s basic care, along with some fresh fruits and canned vegetables and a Christmas canasta básica with household items like rice, beans, sugar, oil, toilet paper, toothpaste, etc.
.
But it was a simple rag doll that elicited squeals of joy and an ear-to-ear smile from Lele.
.
The picture of Doña Rosa - a widow who could choose sorrow and a solitary life - and Lele - a child who could easily have perished by neglect - laughing and smiling and finding joy in each other and the unexpected gift of a simple rag doll. Well....words fail.
.
If the image of these two hugging and laughing isn’t a picture of the message of Christmas...
...of the power of merciful kindness
...of the beauty of redeeming love
...of how “God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important”
...then I don’t know what is.
.
Thank you for making moments like these possible. Praying you, too, find moments of simple, powerful joy this Christmas season.
.
See more of your giving at work in a new video on our website. Link in bio.

Sunday. Most people think it’s the most important day of a pastor’s week. But for #pastors like our dear friend and partner Ed Jaentschke, #sunday is a celebration of God’s work during the other six days of the week. Six days of baptizing, teaching, laughing, serving, listening, and loving. One of our core values and greatest joys is working alongside and supporting pastors so that we know how to best and most appropriately serve their communities.

(3/3) Farming is hard, hard work. Tilling soil, planting seed, weeding, battling drought and pests....it can easily become overwhelming or discouraging.

A big part of our food safety program is simply walking alongside the people we've befriended and trained in farming. We want to "keep them in the game." For more than two years our field director Josh and staff have regularly worked and walked with Sofia to keep her spirits and determination up while she grows her own small business.

"Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor." (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

(2/3) Nicaragua is rich in farmable land. The country's volcanic soil and climate is perfect for crop production but the terrain can make transporting harvested crops a challenge!

Most Nicaraguans who would like to farm a small piece of land simply don't have the knowledge or resources to successfully raise their own crops. Through our food safety program we're focused on helping families that are "food insecure," meaning they don't have reliable access to adequate, nutritious food.

Our food safety training program provides people with practical training from our team of agricultural experts and inputs like seed, tools and fertilizer which they could not afford on their own.

The result is that men and women are able to grow crops that improve their family's diet and generate family income. Maybe even more importantly the affirms their dignity and blesses their families and community.

(1/3) Two years ago we provided Sofia with basic agricultural training and she started planting red beans in a small lot in the community of El Canjon. Today she is farming 2 acres of land, producing beans and corn. She keeps part of her harvest to supplement her family's diet and sells the rest to create income.

Sofia is part of our food safety program, which provides technical assistance, training and inputs like seed and tools to women and men who want to become independent small scale farmers.

Our executive director - pictured here with kids at the San Jose primary school - was in Nicaragua when the civil protests began last month. You can read her blog post on the unrest here: http://bringinglight.org/an-unexpected-revolution/. While it has not affected the communities where we serve it has created significant disruption to daily life in and around Managua and concern for our staff as the entire country works to find its way forward. We are monitoring the situation daily and appreciate everyone’s concerns and prayers.

04/22/2018

Thank you to everyone who has called, texted or emailed asking about the unrest in Nicaragua. I (Katie) just returned last night from Managua. Our staff is safe and grateful for your concern. I will post a longer update tonight with background on the situation and our response for now.
