SSS Sea Wolf Interest Form

Sea Scout Ship, Sea Wolf is reorganizing and will offer a new and improved program for young adults in our community. The CMAST youth program, Sea Wolves, Science Explorers, and the Rotary Passport Club’s Sea Scout Ship 7730 is combining to offer a very unique program that will provide the opportunities and benefits of both programs.

The program is targeting young men and women age 14-20 and adult leaders who are interested in:

• Paddle sports and boating
• Fishing
• Marine Science & Environmental Science
• Service Learning/ Volunteer work
• Documentary Video/ Science Communications
• Camping and outdoor adventures
• Citizen Science with local scientist and agencies
• Youth Leadership Opportunities

This program will fill the needs of many of our area youth. It will provide opportunities for youth to build up a resume to use for college and work. Students will work on real science projects and complete community service hours needed for scholarships.

A unique feature of this program is that students will be registered as both Sea Scouts and Rotary Interactors. This is a great opportunity to add membership in two great organizations to resumes and to participate is local and international service and leadership program.

Registration as Sea Scouts will allow participants to participate in Scouting activities and use the many resources available through the Scouting program. This is a great opportunity for older youth who may have earned Eagle Scout or have stopped meeting with their troop and are looking for more opportunities to earn advancements in Scouting, Venturing and Sea Scouting. Current members of the BSA can be dual registered at no cost. Participants in this program will wear Sea Scout Uniforms and all adult leaders must submit to background checks and will be required to complete online training programs.

The Sea Scouts will also be registered as a Rotary International Interact Club and will participate in Rotary International Service Projects and youth leadership opportunities.

Some of the activities may include:

• Serving as staff members for scouting programs
• Attending Rotary International Youth Leadership Academies.
• Volunteer work with the US Forest Service, Crystal Coast Water Keepers, Coastal Land Trust.
• Science Communications to include making video documentaries and hosting Coastal Teen Science Cafes.
• Outdoor Activities such as camping, kayaking, fishing.
• Participation in national and international events

The most exciting feature of this program is the partnership with many of our community organizations that will provide a program that will provide young people age 14-20 with opportunities to socialize and interact with like-minded young people and to develop and lead a program that meets their needs and interests.

We will hold a virtual information meeting on Wednesday July 8th at 7:00pm and will hold a conservation workday on Saturday July 11th from 0900-1200 at Camp Sam Hatcher. We will be spending the morning in the woods doing a service project at Gale Creek for the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust. Details will be provided to individuals who register for the event.

Scout Me In | Boy Scouts of America

There are several opportunities for young men and women in Carteret County who are looking for outdoor experiences, camping, hiking, fishing, watersports, learning about science careers, volunteer opportunities and lifelong friendships through Scouting.

The Rotary District 7730, Passport Club Charters two unique scout units, the Units meet together on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 8:30 at Camp Albemarle in Newport.

Scouts BSA, Troop 7730 is the only all girl Scouts BSA unit in Carteret County. The program is for young women age 11-18. They participate in all the traditional Boy Scouting activities such as camporees, youth leadership training, service projects and summer camp. The girls spend their meetings learning camp craft such as using knives, axes and other camp tools, outdoor cooking, land navigation, hiking and other outdoor skills. They also learn to hold leadership positions and serve the community.

Sea Scout Ship 7730, Sea Scouts is a unique Scouting program for young men and women age 14-20. Sea Scouts are part of Scouts BSA and emphasize sailing, boating, SCUBA diving and other water sports. The Sea Scouts have ranks and earn awards just like the Scout counterparts and the participate in the same activities such as campouts, service projects and leadership development. The Ship is planning on conducting a sailing school at Camp Albemarle this spring. This is a great program for youth who are considering careers in the Navy, Coast Guard or in the Marine Sciences.

Because these two units are chartered by a Rotary Club, the Scouts are encouraged to participate in Rotary events and service projects. The Scouts will also be registered as an interact club this winter.

A new member meeting will be held on Wednesday December 4th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Camp Albemarle in Newport. Registration for the 2020 year is $60.00 which covers insurance and program costs. Girls who wish to dual register in both the Scouts BSA and Sea Scout unit only pay one registration fee. You can register by visiting www.beascout.org

There are also two new scouting opportunities for young men and women age 14-20 happening in the month of December.

Sea Wolves Science Explorers- The Center for Marine Sciences and Techology (CMAST) Sea Wolves program is returning and an Explorer Program. The program is for youth, age 11-18, who are interested in careers in Coastal Sciences and Technologies. The Sea Wolves will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at CMAST in Morehead City. They will explore subjects such as marine science, Under water Robots (ROVs), Drones, fishing and other coastal topics. The Explorers will participate in local science competitions and programs and will host the Coastal Teen Science Café which will take place quarterly starting in January. The organization meeting for the Science Explorers program will be on Wednesday, December 11th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at CMAST. Registration fee for the program is $50.00 which covers the cost of insurance, and program fees. All youth who plan on participating are encouraged to attend.

New Venturing Crew- Venturing is an advanced scouting program for older youth age 14-20. A special Venturing Crew, is forming at Camp Sam Hatcher which is located off of Nine Mile Road in Newport. The Crew will focus on high adventure programs, shooting sports, fishing, advanced camping and outdoor adventure. Membership in the Crew is a great opportunity for teens who are interested in outdoor activities, outdoor career opportunities such as conservation, wildlife management or law enforcement.

This is also a great opportunity for current or former Scouts who are in high school and would like to continue with advancement and leadership opportunities through the Scouting program, or serve in Scouting program staff positions. The Venture crew will meet on the second Sunday of each month at Camp Sam Hatcher at 1:00pm. Our organizational meeting will be held on Sunday December 8th. Registration cost for the program is $60.00 which covers the cost of insurance and program fees. There is no cost for current Scouts who are registered with another unit and wish to dual register.

All of the above scouting programs are seeking adult leaders over the age of 21 who are interested in serving as direct youth leaders, committee members or consultants.

CMAST AND NC AQUARIUMS VETERINARY STAFF ASSIST COLD-STUNNED TURTLES

Twenty sea turtles arrived mid-November at NCSU-CMAST after a private plane ride from Massachusetts! The turtles were originally cold-stunned and stranded in Massachusetts, where they were assessed and stabilized by the New England Aquarium veterinary team prior to their transport.

Upon arrival at CMAST, all turtles were examined by NSCU-CVM and NC Aquariums veterinary staff to determine their distribution to rehabilitation facilities in North Carolina. Assessments include a physical exam, bloodwork, and radiographs to determine a plan for their continued care.

Cold stun sea turtles are a common occurrence along the east coast this time of year. State wildlife agencies such as the NC Wildlife Resources Commission works with NOAA-NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Service) and other rehab facilities to coordinate the best location for these animals to receive the medical care needed for survival and eventual release back into the wild.
