NEWS RELEASE: Carteret County convenience site recycling changes take effect September 16

CARTERET COUNTY, NC – Due to increasing costs and a diminishing market for recycled goods, the County of Carteret will implement changes to the recycling programs, including drop-off recycling starting on Thursday, Sept. 16.

Carteret County will now offer three recycling drop-off locations for use to all county residents. Citizens can collect and bring their commingled, or mixed, recycling and plastic recycling to the following convenience sites listed below.

- Hibbs Road convenience site – 800 Hibbs Road, Newport
- Otway convenience site – 485 Harkers Island Road, Otway
- West Firetower Road / Hwy 58 convenience site – 1250 West Firetower Road, Swansboro

The recycling programs accept glass, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, paper products (office paper, colored, glossy, newsprints, phone books) and metal cans. Residents are asked to flatten cardboard boxes, plastic containers, aluminum cans and metal cans in order to utilize as much space as possible in the bins.

In addition to the drop-off sites, another recycling method is curbside service. Most towns have contracts in place requiring haulers to provide curbside recycling in their towns. Please reach out to your town for more information on their recycling program.

The Carteret County Public Works Department strives to provide the highest level of service to its citizens. The department is committed to sustaining and protecting the County’s resources, maintaining and upgrading the County’s infrastructure and making improvements in the County to save taxpayer dollars. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Public Works division at (252) 504-4020 to discuss recycling activities, hazardous waste, or solid waste. Carteret County convenience site information and resources can be found at http://www.carteretcountync.gov/470/Solid-Waste-Recycling.

Beach conditions advisory -- Swells from Hurricane Larry continue to impact area beaches this morning (Sept 9), and conditions are expected to continue worsening into tomorrow evening (Sept 10). A High Surf Advisory is in effect for the beaches from Duck to Cape Lookout for surf zone waves of 6-9 feet, but dangerous rip currents are expected for all beaches into the weekend. Know your skill level and recognize that surf conditions may mean staying on the beach rather than getting in the ocean. Have a safe visit!

Image description: infographic showing how to escape from a rip current, along with instructions to Relax as rip currents don't pull you under, Don't swim against the current, Swim out of the current, then to shore, If you can't escape, float or tread water, If you need help, yell or wave for assistance.

Make plans to meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. 08/30/2021

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. Overdose deaths from opioids continue to be a serious health issue in the United States that has been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. Workplaces are not immune from this crisis. As a local business leader, you can take action at your workplace to reduce overdoses from opioids.
• Optimize worker safety, health, and well-being, and consider opportunities to reduce risks for work-related motor vehicle crashes, falls, other injuries and job stress
• Set up a workplace naloxone program
• Educate all staff, employers, and employees

In the US, the week of August 29-September 4 has been declared Overdose Awareness Week. The overdose challenge needs to be discussed honestly and actions need to follow. Overdose is preventable.

#overdoseawarenessday

Tomorrow is #IOAD2021.

Signs have been painted. Letters written. Candles lit. Zoom meetings created. Voices readied. Naloxone prepared. The loved ones no longer with us will be remembered.

The world waits.

Time to Remember. Time to Act.
