Morehead City Chapter: Committee Volunteer Registration | Military Appreciation Day

Less than 6 weeks and counting and we need your help!

FISHING - First, thanks to our 29 skippers who have answered the call so far to volunteer their boats and services to take out 79 troops. We would not have an event without you! For all you other anglers out there, we are still looking for about 21 more boats. If you're sitting on the fence, now's the time to commit if you can. Some well deserving troops will be grateful you did.
Register at: http://militaryappreciationday.net/morehead-city-chapter-boat-volunteer-registration

SHORE SUPPORT - Thanks to our 35 committee volunteers who have answered the call so far. We are still short local volunteers. Part of MAD includes a Friday eve skippers meeting and meal, and a post fishing picnic on Saturday. Site setup, food and beverage prep and serving, cleanup, site tear down and boat ops are all done by volunteers. If you can spare some time, we sure could use a hand. Volunteer registration is at: www.http://militaryappreciationday.net/morehead-city-chapter-committee-volunteer-registration
Hope to see you out there!

TROOPS - Last but not least...troop registration will commence 1 May! You will be able to register at: www. http://militaryappreciationday.net/mad-chapters-morehead-city-nc
We look forward to meeting you and having you as our guests!

Thank you for volunteering to join or help one of our committees. Please select the committee you would most like to help from the drop box below. The committee chairman will contact you and give you an assignment.

A shout out to the 21 skippers who have volunteered their boats and time to carry some 59 troops out for a day on the water. Thank you!

If you've been following our progress here, you know our target is around 50 vessels, so, with less than 2 months until the event we are still in need of more boat boats/skippers.

Please pass the word to any anglers you know who might want to treat our well deserving troops to a day on the water.

Sign-up is at: http://militaryappreciationday.net/morehead-city-chapter-boat-volunteer-registration

Calling all skippers!

To date (22 March and with 75 days until the event), we have 18 intrepid skippers signed up, who collectively can carry 52 troops. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Our goal is around 50 boats so we still have a way to go. More boats are needed!

We hope you'll volunteer this year to bring this great event to the most troops possible.

If you haven't already, please sign up and pass the word to your fellow anglers.

Look forward to seeing you in MHC!
Hank

As Rich said in his 2/5 post - MHC MAD is back for 2021 and will be held on 4/5 June! We are stoked about reinvigorating our event.

Due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and other considerations, this year's event will be a fishing and picnic event only for out active duty troops. Additionally, we will limit the number of boats/troops participating. It's all about keeping our troops, skippers and volunteers safe.

Volunteer registration is open for shoreside activities (Skipper registration will come later). We need folks to help out with the Food and Beverage committee, Boat Operations Committee, Shore site setup and General help.

To volunteer, please visit: www.militaryappreciationday.net. Once there, under Upcoming Events choose the "Volunteer Registration is Open" Link and it will take you to the registration page. You can read about the Committees and choose the one that most interests you.

We hope to see you out there as we provide our troops a great day of fishing and food!

MAD MHC 2020 CANCELLATION

It is with great disappointment that we announce that MAD Morehead City 2020 is cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic presents an event such as ours with a new and unprecedented challenge. By its very nature, MAD is a social event – requiring shore volunteers, skippers, vendors and our troops to be in close proximity. So, in a pandemic, where “social distancing” is seen as the most significant way of limiting the spread of the virus, events such as ours are clearly a no-go.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR MHC: We were very excited about holding the 2020 event and are very disappointed. But as our Chapter President says “…we plan to pack 2 years of pent up energy into an incredible 2021 event…”, and we plan on focusing our energies on the future.

So, please put June 4th and 5th, 2021 on your calendars and plan on joining us as volunteers, skippers, donors and supporting businesses to help make MHC 2021 a memorable event for those who sacrifice so much on our behalf.

Our Special Thanks to those of you who volunteered for the 2020 event. We know you're as disappointed as we are and we look forward to seeing you out there next year!

COMMITTEE VOLUNTEER SIGNUP FOR MAD IS NOW OPEN and we need volunteers in all areas of the event - from food and beverage to site setup to supporting boating ops and more.

MAD is a 100% volunteer organization and everything we do for our troops is free to them. We simply cannot do it without your help.

Don't procrastinate...sign up now!

Sign up at: http://militaryappreciationday.net/mad-chapters-morehead-city-nc. Then under upcoming events choose "General Volunteers".
THANKS!

MAD Morehead City 2019 was postponed. At the time we did not have enough volunteers to plan an amazing day for our military families and rather than host an event that is not up to our standards, we elected to postpone the annual event in Morehead City.

Dear past MHC MAD volunteer,

Hi, my name is Hank Pomeranz. I’m serving as COO for MAD, Inc.

Speaking on behalf of MAD and the troops we are honored to host, thanks so much for your past support.

As you may know, MAD Morehead City was cancelled last year. The reasons are several but our goal is to restart the event in 2020 – likely as a significantly downsized event, while we work out some issues. For example, we probably will not host families this year and work back up that for 2021.

This year’s event is tentatively scheduled for May 30th.

Our biggest challenge is a lack of local leadership and boots on the ground in the time leading up to and through the event. We have some volunteers from other chapters who can support the event but coordinating and getting all the logistics in place must be done locally. In other words, we need Morehead City area volunteers to step up, take charge and do the work – with guidance and assistance from remote MAD volunteers who have experience at the MHC event.

Committees needing your leadership are:
Site Committee – negotiates with the Town of Morehead City to secure parks, dock space, bathroom facilities, set up, take down and clean-up of parks, procure tents, tables and chairs, event insurance, banners and signage
Food Committee- coordinates all aspects of meals over two days including procuring chicken, pork, hot dogs, hamburgers, sides, desserts, water, soda, utensils, cooking teams, serving teams…
Fund Raising – responsible to solicit and raise donations to cover the approximate $10,000 costs of the MHC chapter event.
Operations – coordinate the shore side of boating / fishing operations – communications, keeping track of the fishing “fleet”, helping our guests get to the right boat, fish cleaning,…
This may all sound a bit overwhelming but we have experienced folks who will be there to provide guidance throughout the lead-up period and the event itself. For example, we have experienced volunteers from other Chapters and the organization to help lead and teach you the ins and outs of Food and Beverage, Boat Ops, etc. We want to use this as an opportunity to build MHC back to being a locally self-sufficient event.
Please consider volunteering in support of our troops and help us show our One, Simple Thanks!
If you want to help us kick start this year’s event, you can contact me directly by email at [email protected] or phone at: 910-274-2400.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Hank Pomeranz
COO MAD Inc and President, MAD Southport Chapter.
P.S. If volunteering for a lead role does not make sense for you, I completely understand. The event takes an army of volunteers to do the work on event weekend and we’ll need lots of help.

03/18/2019

If you are interested in helping out with the Morehead City chapter and getting it prepared for an event in 2020, please let me know.

We currently need:
MHC Chapter President- responsible to the MAD Inc Board of Directors (BOD is a 3 person, volunteer role that helps provide assistance and ensures that events are conducted according to the core MAD values)

The Chapter President will select and direct the area activity leaders whose main responsibilities (not a fully inclusive list, but the main activities) which listed below

Volunteer Boater Committee- coordinates all aspects of matching guests to volunteer boat providers. This includes matching guests to boats, volunteer mates, boat departure times, boat check in and check out

Family Activity Committee- coordinates all aspects of land based activities including carnival type games, music, Pirate Ship, kids fishing

Site Committee- negotiates with the Town of Morehead City to secure parks, dock space, bathroom facilities, set up, take down and clean up of parks, procure tents, tables and chairs, event insurance, banners and signage

Food Committee- coordinates all aspects of up to 1500 individual meals over two days including procuring chicken, pork, hot dogs, hamburgers, sides, desserts, water, soda, utensils, cooking teams, serving teams and much more

Fund Raising Leader- responsible to solicit and raise donations to cover the approximate $10,000 costs of the MHC chapter event

MAD MOREHEAD CITY POSTPONED

MAD Morehead City 2019 is being postponed. At this time we do not have enough volunteers to plan an amazing day for our military families and rather than host an event that is not up to our standards, we have elected to postpone the annual event in Morehead City.

Our plan is to spend the next year actively recruiting new volunteers to lead the chapter and to come back in 2020 better than ever.

Thank you for volunteering or donating over the past 14 years and for making amazing memories for our military families.

MAD events in Southport, Tidewater and Charleston will be held as planned.

History of MAD

In February of 2006 a newspaper in Wilmington, NC published a story about restaurants that were refusing entry to a group of Marines who had just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Rodney Carroll, Dan Smith and John Polosky were outraged and decided to do something about it!

Within a few weeks they raised almost $1000 and with the help of a donated van and a few marines they set forth on a mission to change this policy and pay tribute to those who have served America.

As they visited these restaurants and spent time with these young marines they were overwhelmed with the desire to show appreciation for our true American Heroes and thus the idea for Military Appreciation Day was born!

Within two short months, all of the planning for the event was completed and on May 20, 2006 men and women from all five branches of the Armed Services arrived for the First Annual Military Appreciation Day or MAD1.
