One way we practically love our Shepherds Training Center students is by inviting them into the homes of our missionaries. We want these men to see godly families and we’re so thankful for our missionary families that model that so well!

We love Monday nights for this reason—professors night! We eat together with some of the students from STC and talk about everything from culturural differences to child rearing to the frustrations of grammar. Then we gather together in the living room with piping hot cups of African spiced tea and cookies and discuss the question of the night. It’s the best!

Prayer Request:

Our dear friends, The Cupps, have been trying to adopt this sweet girl. The process has been slow and endured many challenges and they had to leave the mission field without their precious girl.

October 22 is the court day set but there is so much paperwork that needs to get through the system and the progress is discouraging. Would you pray? For Damon and Jen and that all the details needed for her adoption would be done by the court date?

Prayer request: October 22nd is the court date set for this little girl’s adoption, but things aren’t looking good for all the proper documents to be in place in time. Would you pray that God would move heaven and earth to get the documents needed to be able to go to court? Would you ask God to give peace to the Cupp family as they wait on the Lord’s timing? Would you go before the throne on their behalf and plead with God to work this time of separation for His glory and for all of our good. #adoptionjourney #waitingonthelord #forhisglory #hiswaysarehigher #forourgood

“I've left the darkness to walk in the light!" Godfrey boldly declared before he stepped into the pool for baptism on Sunday.

5 years ago, his younger brother, Mubiru John (currently studying Bible at The Master's University), planted a seed by giving him the gospel. But not until Damon Cupp taught him the Bible 2 years ago was he truly transformed. Godfrey was one of 6 believers from CBC of Kubamitwe to make the plunge.

Bisagnis in Uganda

A hero’s farewell was the only way to honor the precious Cupp family as one chapter of their life comes to an end and another chapter begins. It was complete with a marching band, fanfare, and hundreds of villagers lining the path from their house all the way to the gate to give one last tearful goodbye.

Bisagnis in Uganda

This past year the Cupp family realized that it was time for them to transition back to the states after 7 years of faithful service to the Lord here at SOS. We are so thankful for their family and all that the Lord has done both in and through them. We will forever be impacted by your lives. We won’t say goodbye—that’s too sad— instead we will say, “see you later.” 😢 #goodbyeshavebegun #cuppfamily #sosministries

Our Story

Founded in 2002, SOS Ministries is a Christian non-profit organization which seeks to provide humanitarian aid and biblical training to all those in need, focusing on the people of Uganda. Shannon Hurley founded SOS Ministries after seeing the overwhelming physical and spiritual needs of the Ugandan people. These needs primarily are a result of the horrific reign of Idi Amin Dada in the 70′s, the devastating results of the AIDS epidemic, and a continued culture of poverty, single-parent families, alcoholism, and various parasitic false religions promising wealth and health.

Shannon Hurley was introduced to Uganda in 1995 after traveling to Kenya with a group of ten other volunteers on a short-term missions trip. While in Kenya, he met a Kenyan missionary to Uganda. During this visit Shannon went with ten others through the country of Uganda. This trip made a tremendous impact on Shannon. His heart was moved by the love and joy of the Ugandan people. In January 2002, Shannon returned to the beloved country. The purpose of his visit was to see what opportunities he might have for the future. Consequently, SOS Ministries was born, officially incorporating on July 19, 2002.

In 2002, Shannon graduated from The Masters Seminary and in early 2006 relocated his family to Uganda to more effectively serve the people. Initially operating a Christ-focused orphanage in the Kampala suburb of Mukono, Shannon became increasingly convinced that God had other plans for his ministry, as He opened a door to strengthen the Church through biblical training. In early 2009, As Shannon’s biblical training ministry continued to expand to meet the great need for clear teaching and training (Hosea 4:6), Shannon relocated the ministry to Luweero, two hours north of Kampala in a remote jungle. From this base, SOS could be among the people and pastors they desire to impact.

Shortly after relocating to Kubamitwe, SOS planted a church in 2009 to disciple the local community in God’s Word. As a result of discipleship, now more than 60 members have been baptized and are ministering to the community. Seeing the need for education in the local community, SOS established its primary school, Legacy Christian Academy in 2013. Since arriving in Luwero, SOS Ministries has grown from a staff of 5 to over 70 full-time staff, and its national training ministry continues to grow, with the construction of the classrooms completed for Shepherds Training Center.
