New Placement and Donations

I received a foster placement who came with nothing except the clothes on her back. This is our first time experiencing this; however, this is often the norm for many emergency placement.

Our foster love met us in the church parking lot for the first time. It was a busy evening and late night without much time to grab any necessities or clothes for her, so I tossed my daughter’s PJ’s on her for the night, tossed her only clothes in the laundry so she had clean clothes in the morning, and decided I would tackle the rest in the morning.

Within minutes of asking for clothes on a local facebook group, I was overwhelmed with messages and tags linking me to “foster closets” and friends who had clothes to share. Friends I didn’t even know were in the group texted me saying they would cover Christmas and blankets.

To say I am overwhelmed with gratitude is an understatement. The items I received today were not rejects or grimy. Many of them were brand new with tags because this little girl “deserves to have a soft blanket of her own”.

As I unpacked the bags and bags of things this afternoon, I was overcome by tears. There were words of love and affirmation left on notes inside the bags. There were numerous texts building up on my phone asking how to help. There were extra diapers and basic toiletries. And there were more items in the bags than I even asked for. Most importantly, these things belong to our new girl. They are hers. They are the first things in our home she can claim as hers. In a world where everything she knew was just left behind, this is one more thing to help her begin healing and feeling safe with us.

Fostering cannot be done on your own. Each person today who went out of their way to text, to pick up blankets and PJs, who went through their child’s clothes to see what they could share, each of those people are a part of the fostering village. And I cannot thank each of you enough.

If fostering is something on your radar but you aren't sure how to get involved or if your company is ever wondering how to truly make a difference with an organization, find a local foster closet and team up with them to do diaper drives, PJ buys, and seasonal needs like mitten, gloves and coats. You will never see the faces of those who receive them, but I can tell you from personal experience, the blessings I received today were too great to put into words.

A big thanks to my local mission group James Mission for quickly filling my little one's needs with more vital items than I could have asked for.
