Russell Theatre

Russell Theatre The Russell Theatre is an atmospheric theatre located in the heart of Maysville, KY. The theatre transported you to a time of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture under the twinkling stars.

The Russell Theatre closed its doors as a theatre in 1983. In the years after its closing as a theatre, the Russell Theatre was home to several business until it was finally abandoned. While abandoned the roof was damaged in a storm which left the theatre exposed to the elements. Finally in 1995, a group of citizens stepped up and formed a nonprofit organization called the Russell Theatre Corporation and purchased the theatre. This group is dedicated to restoring the Russell Theatre to its golden years and reopening the theatre. Now you can tour the Russell Theatre! Tours are by appointment only. You can send a message here on our page to schedule a tour, or go to our website at www.russelltheatre.org and use the contact form. Tours are $4/person and children 8 & under are free. All proceeds go toward the restoration of the theatre.

Happy birthday to our own Rosemary Clooney!

Rosie was a vibrant, beautiful soul who touched the lives and hearts of so many around the world, but she never forgot where home was or who her real friends were. She chose us, the Russell Theatre - her amazing hometown theatre for the world premiere of her first major motion picture, “The Stars are Singing.” She is pictured here singing on stage at the Russell Theatre ❤️

We celebrate Rosie everyday at the Russell and even have the original dress she wore in the movie, an original movie poster, and original program from the premiere. You can tour the Russell Theatre and hear all about the theatre’s history and Rosemary’s legacy. Don’t forget to meander down the road to the The Rosemary Clooney House in Augusta, Ky for the rest of the story!

Happy Birthday Rosie!!!

The Russell Theatre would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the years. Help comes in many forms: coming to a movie, making a donation, volunteering, sharing posts, etc. All of your actions have helped move us forward.

Since the resurgence of the Russell in 2013 we have had some very dedicated volunteers and community partners. Applebee's Grill + Bar has helped us tremendously for several years by providing coupons for patrons who come to the movies, executing fundraisers for our benefit, and providing lunch for school groups who have come down to enjoy a movie. Not only does Applebee’s as a company help support the theatre but Christine Meyer Helvey, the general manager of the Maysville Applebee’s is one of our most dedicated volunteers.

As many of you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has shut down many businesses and forced the food industry to serve take out only. We are asking all of you to help us help Christine help her employees. If you are ordering take out, we ask that you consider ordering from Applebee’s. They have helped support us and now is our chance to help these people who need their jobs more than ever. They are our neighbors and friends, parents of our children’s friends and we can help them keep their store open and keep them working through this difficult time.

At this time, they are serving food, beer, and bottled wine through Carside ToGo.

Here is a link to their menu:

Please help us help them.

We know this is an exciting time for everyone who loves the Russell but for our workers safety and your own, please refrain from stopping by to see how it is coming along. We LOVE that so many people are excited about this project, but given the restrictions everyone has been asked to follow in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we invite you to enjoy the sneak peeks of the progress posted on our social media and plan to attend our “big reveal” on May 16, 2020 (given that the restrictions have been lifted at that time) to see the lobby in all its glory.

Sooo...you may have heard, we are finally completing the lobby thanks to a donation we received from a family trust. We are working to bring the atmosphere of the auditorium into the lobby so that guests have a complete experience. Huge thank you to Carey Seven for coming in to complete some intricate paint effects, and to Shannon Collings for helping to patch and prime many of the surfaces and strip the paint from the beams, doors, and door facings.

The first time the general public will be invited into the theatre to see the completed lobby will during our May 16 event, but here are some sneak peeks of what’s going on...

The #goldenyears of the Russell
All of #Maysville eagerly turned out for the debut of the new #moviepalace on December 4, 1930, to see Eddie Cantor in “Whoopee,” and to view the world of fantasy and imagination constructed in their small #Kentucky town. The Russell featured a Mediterranean garden theme, with painted facades of lush landscaping, stone and plaster balconies draped with Spanish shawls, and faux Lombard trees and trailing ivy to add to the effect. Plaster statuary adorned both the lobby and the main floor of the theater. The ceiling, which was painted a dark navy blue to mimic a night sky, twinkled with tiny lights, and many were later surprised to discover that they had attended an indoor movie, as the “night sky show” was so realistic.
Col. J. Barbour Russell operated the theater until 1935, when it was leased to the Schine Group. For the next few decades, the Schine Group brought both feature films and live entertainment to The Russell. Tom Mix rode his horse on #stage here and various other singing and dancing acts shared the venue. The curved orchestra pit shared space underneath the stage with dressing rooms for performers. One unique feature of The Russell’s stage is the dependence on stage left; there is no stage right. More than 700 patrons could be seated on the main floor and in the two balconies.
In the 1950s, the theater served the community as meeting space for the First Christian Church and Trinity United Methodist Church while they were undergoing construction.
The Russell Theatre received national recognition in 1953 when Maysville’s own Rosemary Clooney chose The Russell to premiere her hit movie, “The Stars Are Singing,” at a cost of $3 per ticket. Rosemary herself chose to sit with her best friend from childhood, Blanche Chambers. From the theater’s beginnings, African-American patrons sat in the upper balcony accessed by a separate stairway; they were not allowed on the main floor or in the lobby restrooms. The Russell was finally desegregated in the early 1960s. Rosemary Clooney (Official) The Rosemary Clooney House #historicrestoration #history #rosemaryclooney #thisismaysville #maysvilleky #loveus

Colonel J. Barbour Russell, a flamboyant, well-known #Maysville businessman who made his early fortune in the grocery business, decided to erect a #moviepalace in #downtown Maysville in 1928 as a #philanthropic gesture to his hometown. A president of both the Maysville Rotary Club and the Maysville County Club, Russell had also formed the first boys’ #band in Maysville, the #Kentucky Cardinal Boys’ Band and had achieved some regional celebrity as patron of the band. With the erection of the grand downtown #theatre, though, Russell would realize his greatest prominence.

Russell contracted with architects Frankel and Curtis of Lexington and interior designer Ralph Clevenger of Columbus, Ohio, to build a luxurious structure that transported its patrons to a world of escape. The structure resulting from Russell’s vision is constructed entirely of steel, concrete, brick, and terra cotta in Spanish Colonial style with a Moorish influence. “What the Roxy is to New York,” Russell boasted, “The Russell will be to Maysville.” In 1930 the initial estimate for the theatre was $125,000, but by completion the project topped $200,000 which would be more than $2,808,000 today.

In February 1929, Col. J. Barbour Russell announced he had let the contract for the erection of a handsome fireproof theatre on East Third Street to be call The Russell. This was envisioned at a time of great economic expansion in the United States, and it became a reality right at the start of the Great Depression when people needed to be transported away from the grim realities of poverty. #kentucky #livinghistory #atmospherictheatre #historictheatre #historicpreservation #historicpreservationmatters #preservingmemories #thisismaysville #theheartofdowntownmaysville

This video of my beloved Rosemary Clooney seemed appropriate for this time of year. "When October Goes" was an unfinished poem by Johnny Mercer that Barry Manilow finished and put music to and recorded a beautiful version of as well.

Hello Friends! My mom and dad have a brick with their names on it out front of the theater. My dad is 86 and mom has passed away. Dad wants to replace their damaged brick. How would we go about doing this?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOVIE HOUSE!!!!
Help please! unauthorized donation made via Facebook.
I would like to put in a request for the movie Urban Cowboy. It was playing the day there was an earthquake that struck Maysville back in the early 1980's and my parents were inside the theater when it struck and they had to run out into the street. Bricks were falling as they ran out. My parents are in their late eighties and they have never have seen the end of that movie in all these years and it would be amazing for me to take them back to the Russell to see the movie....until the end. Thank you.
Support the renovation of the Russell and continue to bring it back to its days of magical ambiance. After purchasing a number of memorial bricks, I have included the Russell Theatre as one of the beneficiaries in my Living Trust.
Happy Anniversary, Dracula (published May 26th, 1867). And it was the 1931 classic starring Bela Lugosi that first brought movies back to the Russell in October 2013!!! It was also the only time two good little witches teamed up with a bad guy for a good cause! Thanks, Count!
Thank you Russell Theatre and crew! I was a bit to young to see Back to the Future in 1985. Really enjoyed tonight! The place is looking great. Good concessions too! Looking forward to a summer at the movies!
I am ready for Brave! How about you? #RussellRevival2019
Life imitated art today! Thank you, Russell Theatre!!!!
Sounds like a good candidate for 2019 lineup
