CASA of Bracken, Fleming, & Mason Counties

CASA of Bracken, Fleming, & Mason Counties CASA Program for Bracken, Fleming & Mason Counties, Inc. is to provide trained community volunteers to speak for children in court who are victims of dependency, neglect and/or abuse.

The citizens of Bracken, Fleming, and Mason County are very fortunate to have a strong CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program that advocates for the best interests of abused, neglected, and dependent children. The mission of our program is to find a “safe and loving home for these children as soon as possible.” As director of the CASA program, along with our board of directors, the wonderful volunteers, and most importantly the children we serve, we want to thank all those who support our program financially, as well as those who we work with on a daily basis in a collaborative way to provide the many services these children need. Last year, more than 70,900 CASA and guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers helped 237,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes. CASA volunteers are everyday citizens who have undergone screening and training with their local CASA/GAL program. -Shanda Hamilton, Executive Director

Experiencing abuse or neglect has lasting consequences for youth:
-According to the US Children's Bureau, at age 17, more than 1/4 of youth in foster care have been referred for substance abuse or counseling at some point.
-By age 21, 20% of youth who were in foster care at 17 have been incarcerated within the prior 2 years. 22% have given birth to or fathered a child. 42% have experienced homelessness at some point.

There are bright spots, though. At age 17, 94% of youth in foster care reported that they had a supportive adult in their lives who they could rely on for advice or emotional support.

Across the US, CASA programs serve approximately 1/3 of older youth in foster care, helping these youth develop the resilience they'll need to thrive, and we're looking for more volunteers. It's Child Abuse Prevention Month - a great time to get involved. Contact us today!

Taking Care of Your Mental Health in the Face of Uncertainty

It is so important for everyone - our staff and volunteers included - to take care of their mental health during this time of uncertainty. A few things you can do:
1. Separate what is in your control from what is not.
2. Do what helps you feel a sense of safety.
3. Get outside in nature - even if you are avoiding crowds.
4. Challenge yourself to stay in the present.
5. Stay connected and reach out if you need more support.

Read more at the link below! How are you taking care of your mental health? Share it with us and stay well! #ChangeAChildsStory #TeamKentucky #TogetherKY #mentalhealth

"Chronic neglect is associated with a wider range of damage than active abuse, but it receives less attention in policy and practice," says the Harvard Center on the Developing Child.

Having a stable relationship with a supportive adult can help children do well even when they have faced significant hardships like neglect. CASA volunteers are those supportive adults. One important role of the CASA volunteer is partnering with others in a child's case to identify and advocate for the best supports for that child. Children who have experienced abuse or neglect need quality, therapeutic care and support to move beyond those experiences and thrive.

This Child Abuse Prevention Month, help a child thrive by becoming a volunteer or by donating so we can train and support other volunteers. www.casaforbrackenflemingmason.org/volunteer #ChangeAChildsStory #CAPM2020 National CASA / GAL Association for Children

Sunshine & Pinwheels - It's a beautiful day
During the "Social Distancing," children are more vulnerable to abuse. Parents/caregivers are stressed about income, bills, kids' education, kids being home all the time, and the virus itself. The human interaction of friends. co-workers, and extended family is not as accessible as we are used to, so our outlets for stress are not as available, at a when these outlets are needed more than ever. The stress MAY be taken out on a child, when they are the most avialable target/stressor at a hot-button moment. Children are not in school or day care, so signs of abuse may go unnoticed. April is Child Abuse Awareness month - please be aware.
Community Day is when CASA, DCBS, Comprehend, Tom Browning Boys & Girls Club and Community Partners partner together to promote Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness. It is a FREE EVENT; and all are welcome to attend.
