Methodist Children's Home South GA

Methodist Children's Home South GA In response to Christ and the Church, the mission of The Methodist Home for Children and Youth is to be a model agency that restores childhoods, strengthens families and cultivates a people-building organization.

The Methodist Home is more than a home for children, it is also a home for a host of children and family programs and services. With six sites across South Georgia (Macon, Americus, Valdosta, St. Marys, Columbus and Waverly Hall), we have a range of more than 15 services. A cloudy, cool day didnโ€™t damper the fun at our fall festival in Macon. Our kids enjoyed football, tug of war, pumpkin bowling, field tic tac toe, pumpkin painting, music and a wonderful picnic.

Below is a special story that our chaplain, Rev. Josh Gale, sent to TMH staff via email. We just knew we had to share it with our friends! ๐Ÿ’™

6 Buttons & A Puzzle
Locked in a cabinet of the chapel on the Macon campus lives an old floppy disc drive system, cleverly named "Liberty Bell," which controls the bells of the bell tower above our chapel. On the front panel, there are 6 black buttons, a series of green LEDs with small type next to them, and a digital clock display. There's no user manual...just 6 buttons and a puzzle. (Later, I did call a technician and he said, "Lordy! I haven't had a call for one of these things in 15 years, but that was hot tech back in the day!")

With the leadership team's blessing, I thought it might be nice once or twice a day to hear the bells play familiar hymn tunes across the campus--especially on such dreary weeks like this one!--so I took it upon myself to try and kick it back into gear. Fumbling around the switches, I figured some things out but couldn't for the life of me get the bells to just PLAY, even as a test. Somewhat annoyed, I called it for the day and moved on to lunch.

Yesterday while I was off-campus, I got a call from Dr. Lawrence saying, "Josh! Are those BELLS I hear ringing?" I asked him what he was talking about, and so he put me on speakerphone. Sure enough...bells playing Holy Holy Holy, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and whatever else came to their digital minds rang pleasantly in the background. Proudly, I put a check on the bell system.

There was one problem...we couldn't figure out how to get them to STOP playing. An hour and a half later I was able to get back to the Liberty Bell puzzle and mute the output, which brings the timeline of things up to where we are now. Currently, bells are playing around the clock above the chapel (but muted) until I can figure out the scheduling puzzle. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป

I know that story is long, but I think about the words of a hymn we used to sing as child, closing out our Sunday evening church services (back when that was a thing):

And that's how it is with God's Love,
Once you've experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.

We breathed a little life into those bells, and once they got going you couldn't STOP them from singing the Lord's praise. Like a Psalm, they were proclaiming the goodness of God from the highest place around. But unlike the Psalms we have suburban neighbors and so they're currently on mute...

I'm grateful that the heart of my praise doesn't have to be put on mute. I'm also grateful that it isn't locked behind a panel of 6 buttons and a puzzle. Not unlike the care we extend to our kids, God's grace is offered to us 24/7, and once you begin to live with a consciousness of gratitude, it's hard to stop taking notice of the love that's all around. And it's free to us, but it came at a great cost.

For myself--just this week--I'm grateful for attentive and caring staff, for Dr. Lawrence's willingness to laugh off the bell situation with me, for Bruce's listening ear, for Ms. Daisy and Mr. Golden's tender heart and powerful vocal chords. The list could go on...it's hard to stop once you start. My heart chimes are singing just thinking about it.

So, what is it that you're thankful for? It's easy to be dreadful and resentful--the world is full of darkness. And there's a time to cry out of those things, especially here, but first...what's being locked in the backroom of the temple of your heart, the praise that God has put in you that is begging to be released? That wants to sing and dance like King David in the Psalter? Let it out. And pray it over our kids--that they, too, can feel the peace of God's praise.

The love of Jesus is extended to you, and that's just too good to keep for yourself.

We love our HOPE foster parents and the children they serve!

From one of our AMAZING foster parents:

You know whatโ€™s hardโ€ฆthrowing everything youโ€™ve ever known about parenting out the window because it doesnโ€™t work with this little one and their life experience. Trying something different and completely upside down from what youโ€™ve known and done for the last 17 years is hard.
But whatโ€™s harder is realizing you shouldโ€™ve tried something different a long time ago. Having daily battles is much harder on you both and everyone in your home.
But whatโ€™s hardest is EVERYTHING sheโ€™s been through and finding the humility to undo what youโ€™ve always done to adapt to her needs.
Weโ€™re a work in progress, always in progress with so far to go, but by the grace of God weโ€™re learning because sheโ€™s worth it.

The Methodist Home for Children & Youth

HISTORY

In 1856, The Bibb County Widows and Orphans Home was established โ€œoutside the city of Macon.โ€ In the years after the Civil War, citizens in Middle Georgia suffered along with the rest of the region from lack of jobs, income and food. Rev. Jessie Boring, a Methodist Civil War chaplain, worked to establish a place of refuge for needy children and youth. In 1872, Bibb County sold this Home to the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church for one dollar.

The organization began its journey from an orphanage to a residential treatment and foster care provider. The Methodist Home shelters children while nourishing and enriching each childโ€™s life to prepare them to transition into productive, healthy adult members of society. The Methodist Home in Macon has evolved from a 92-acre working farm with a few small buildings to a beautiful residential campus, which provides hope and happiness to at-risk children and youth.
