Please give a warm welcome to our new Interim Executive Director, Erin Gallagher!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This Is My Brave Founder and Executive Director, Jennifer Marshall, is passing the mic to Program Manager Erin Gallagher at the end of this year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Creating and leading This Is My Brave has been one of the greatest privileges of my life," says Jennifer Marshall. "Born from my personal experience of releasing my mental health story into the world and feeling tremendous freedom and empowerment, not to mention the flood of support and gratitude for my vulnerability, I knew I wanted to bring these same feelings to others dealing with mental health challenges."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Internally, we've been working on this transition since June. As the microphone is passed, we remain one community in this movement to achieve our goal: that one day it won't need to be brave to talk about mental health. It will simply be called talking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"I am humbled to be presented with the opportunity to serve as Interim Executive Director of this incredible organization," Erin Gallagher.

If a close friend or sibling has a bad day, we are all quick to send them a mood-boosting text or run out and grab dinner with them. We send flowers to sick family members and write thank you notes to those who do good in our lives. But as simple as it can seem to be gracious and compassionate towards others, we sometimes fall short when the receiver is our own selves.

Let’s look at things we can do to cultivate self-love and bring it into our everyday lives.

Following a nationwide call for storytellers at the beginning of 2020, ten talented and resilient teens came forward to share their stories on the virtual stage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With the original plan to have a live show on stage, our Brave Teens believed in the importance of this project and worked with us through the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our documentary team – Principle Pictures – was able to visit with each teen in their hometown to complete the individual pieces of the show.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The end result is a beautiful piece of hope and recovery that will speak to teens (and parents) all across the world.

Our Story

In August of 2011, more than six years after Jennifer Marshall's bipolar disorder first surfaced, she decided to start a blog. It became a place where she turned to write about her life as a wife and young mom to two small kids, and writing helped her begin to heal. She titled it: Bipolar Mom Life.

Jennifer wrote anonymously at first, because she was afraid of being judged. She also worried that disclosing her mental illness may make future employment opportunities difficult. For eighteen months, Jennifer wrote and found community online. Other writers who were openly sharing their stories of overcoming mental illness inspired her, and when she landed her first paid writing job, Jennifer decided to stop hiding behind a pen name.

When WhatToExpect.com published her first article with Jennifer's byline, it was also picked up by AOL.com (the parent company). The outpouring of support and gratitude when that piece hit the Internet with her real name was overwhelming. She knew immediately that disclosing was the right decision. She could finally talk about all parts of her life, and not just the shiny, fun moments.

About six months later, Jennifer had the idea to launch a theater show. She wanted to give others the same opportunity she had - a stage on which to share their story of living a successful life despite mental illness. Jennifer met her Co-Founder, Anne Marie Ames, at a mutual friend's party and recruited her to help put the project out to the world.

I am so thankful to This Is My Brave for giving me a voice and a platform to share my story and eliminate stigma! The editor of BP (Bipolar) Magazine saw my video from my 2018 (https://youtu.be/hZD2QBaxJkEperformance ) and requested to feature me in their "This Is Me" segment within their magazine for the Winter 2021 edition. It was an honor and a privilege to be recognized and grace the pages of a magazine that inspires hope to those who struggle with mental illness.
Hi my Brave Family! Do I know any story tellers who have talked about Aspergers?
Dear Jennifer and friends--I don't know if you remember me, Jennifer, but you asked me to produce a This Is My Brave show, some time ago, which I was gratified about, but did decline. This is an insightful article about Corporal Thae Ohu, who is in the Marines, here in the US. She was sexually assaulted by a commanding officer, and is now in solitary confinement, on trumped up charges against her ex-boyfriend, who wants them dropped. She is mentally ill, partly as a result of the assault, and she isn't getting treatment. She deserves compassionate release. She and I became pen pals this year--on what happened to be my 59th birthday, July 14th. I just heard from her again, after months, as they are very strict with her. For instance, I sent her two books, but they are apparently being returned to me, as she didn't request them from me ahead of time. I empathize with her, as a fellow sexual abuse survivor, and as someone with mental illness, myself. Her sister created a page for her release, and I will include a link for it, as well. I thought you would be interested in knowing about her, given your organization's mission. https://thewarhorse.org/retaliation-gag-order-marine-corps-silences-woman-victim-sexual-assault-thae-ohu-investigation/?fbclid=IwAR34mNgfo4A5Dvo_nrJrRswe2GVjJ0vfTD3fZrp5y4efRsR5sDUxBJuGmN0 https://www.facebook.com/JusticeForThae

Hi, it's me...!
Does anyone know about any type of “mental health buddy” groups? I have a therapist but I’m feeling like I could use support daily right now - I don’t want to have to keep burdening my husband and so many of my friends are struggling too.
Please check out Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper, where she "speaks" to the issues regarding COVID19 and the collateral stories.
Congratulations TIMB Storming Brave Motivated Movers! I'm all in except the part about moving with thankles, cankles all the way to pelvis. Have run, marched walked, etc. for so many causes in the mental health consumer, LGBTQ, HIV/AIDS, su***de and overdose prevention civil rights movements STANDING 4 U today APPLAUDING! Monday celebrated half this life living with HIV turning 64. As an HIV Long-Term Survivor for 32 years since testing in 1988 will not let COVID take me; two major pandemics is enough. Although it's not about me, it's about Y'all means ALL. Thought I'd share last year’s LGBTQ Pride Parade in Philadelphia, PA, 50th Anniversary of Stonewall. The Pink & Blues www.pinkandblues.info has been in many prior parades winning Best Performance (Miss Altered States aka me), Best Public Statement "It Takes A Village, People!" and Best Float. The Monday prior attended Philly's LGBTQ State of the Union, freaking out NOTHING from 12 LGBTQ service providers and organizations addressed mental health, addiction, su***de and/or overdose prevention. Went to break-out group expressing disdain noticing a guy in corner connecting nonverbally when sharing I live with Bipolar II (The Sequel), in recovery from additions, HIV-positive, proud cisgender gay man, etc. On Friday he shot himself in office as Pride Weekend was unfolding. He was a young up and coming gay Latino leader, Deputy Sheriff and LGBTQ Communities Liaison. I was devastated as all compelled to march for Dante Austin. Joining NYC & Philly professional gay cheer squads was living a ‘drag with a tag’ senior moment with "Where's the plan to STOP SU***DE & OVERDOSE?" message on front of placard. Everywhere we walk, run and cross paths with people is an opportunity to share our lived-experiences, focus on recovery and end discrimination from fear by society. We share one person at a time, one place at a time, one moment in time . . . CHEERS & BRAVO 4 BRAVERY! Be safe, wear mask and physically distance maintaining social connections. Mark A. Davis with a PhD in Social Distancing, TIMB 2018 Philadelphia Cast
