Lynker’s adopted Humpback Whale, Bayou, came back to the feeding grounds this year with a calf!
Ocean Alliance had a very productive research season with the humpbacks off the coast of Gloucester, MA. Etch-a-Sketch, shown in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ig1j9SX8m0, was taking 10-minute dives with short surface intervals, most likely feeding at the bottom. They collected snot samples and photogrammetry measurements of over 20 individual whales this season. Help support their important research on protecting whales at whale.org

Happy New Water Year 2022! The folks in our Boulder office were excitedly waiting for the “Water Balloon” that dropped at midnight last night! What is a “water year” you might say? It’s a time period of 12 months for which precipitation totals are measured…and now we have a whole additional year to audit performance with our reservoir models! https://water.usgs.gov/nwc/explain_data.html

Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, PhD, US Navy (ret), Lynker Strategic Advisor and the prior Deputy Administrator of NOAA and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, wrote a recent article for RealClearScience (RCS) called “We Need Better Weather Intelligence for the Coming Climate Crisis.” Climate change does not kill people and damage property, the resulting severe weather does. Accurate, high precision weather intelligence is the key to saving lives as the climate changes. Two Lynker authors, Cameron Wobus and Rachel Bash, as well as collaborators from EPA, Abt Associates, and First Street Foundation had their paper called "Climate Change, Riverine Flood Risk and Adaptation for the Conterminous United States" formally published in ERL (Environmental Research Letters). The team found that even in worst-case climate change scenarios, basic investment criteria like the discount rate and the desired benefit-cost ratio are more important for selecting adaptation actions than the rate of climate change. This means that homeowners and communities can select cost-effective adaptation strategies based on their current understanding of risk, rather than being paralyzed by uncertainties in future climate projections. For the full article, click here: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac1bd7
The analysis done by Wobus and his co-authors also contributed to a new EPA report entitled "Climate Change and Social Vulnerability in the United States: A Focus on Six Impacts," which was released on September 2. That analysis used the First Street Foundation's building database along with customized climate change scenarios to look at where impacts from inland flooding might fall disproportionately on socially vulnerable populations. The full social vulnerability report is available at https://www.epa.gov/cira/social-vulnerability-report

Meet the newest member of the Lynker family…. Bayou the Humpback Whale!
Lynker adopted Bayou to support the important research @OceanAlliance is doing to conserve whales and their ocean habitat. Bayou is easily recognized because half the whale's right fluke was lost in a ship strike in 2009 (when Bayou was 3 years old). The wound has healed nicely, but seeing Bayou is a stark reminder of the dangers that whales face while feeding or migrating close to shore or through areas heavily trafficked by boats. Colorado Airborne Snow Observatory (A*O) Collaboration

Lynker is part of a collaboration to roll out Airborne Snow Observatory (A*O) technology throughout Colorado. A*O is a new technology that uses airborne Lidar to calculate precise snow depth and available water supply in the snowpack. In times of increasing water stress throughout the West, technologies like A*O are necessary to improve decision-making on reservoir operations, drought planning, flood control and many other uses. Check out the video below!
