While our doors may be closed, we’ll still bring the Gallery to you online. During our temporary closure, we’ll take you on a tour, gallery by gallery—each day we’ll focus on one room and the works of art on view within it. We’ll hear from curators on their favorites, look closely, and learn more about the many triumphs of human creativity that hang on our walls.

Among art’s many powers is its ability to relieve stress—we hope this will bring a bit of peace to your lives.

Our featured FOLPA artist today is Joan Ines Garcia. Joan is a painter, illustrator and stamp maker who only just recently retired from life as an elementary school teacher. Finding inspiration in everything from the natural world to fabrics and tiles to the creative energy of people in her life, Joan primarily works in acrylics, gouache, watercolors and ink.

Joan has exhibited locally at several Loudoun libraries, as well as at Tryst Gallery in Leesburg.

In her own words... "Using vibrant, energetic colors in my work, I enjoy depicting nature, people and motifs that are joyful and often part of everyday life… I like to use my art to put a thoughtful and positive energy into the world. I hope you feel this when viewing my work."

In addition to our Thomas Balch Library exhibit, Joan’s work may currently be seen in Tryst Gallery’s Unapologetic Exhibition- on display now through January 18.

Our featured FOLPA artist of the day is local landscape painter Kathleen Howsare. A resident of Loudoun for the past 34 years, Kathleen retired from teaching art in Virginia and W. Virginia public schools about six years ago. Having been painting for most of her life, acrylic paint is her medium of choice, as is the occasional use of old barn wood in lieu of canvas. Her subjects range from agricultural themes to woodland scenes to wildlife.

Kathleen has exhibited in multiple local galleries and events, including but not limited to Art Sweet Art, Bluemont Fair, Byrne Gallery, Franklin Part Arts Center, Hopps Art Lounge, Lovettsville Library, Purcellville Arts and Music Festival, Tryst Gallery, Waterford Fine Art Show and the Western Loudoun Artists Tour. She has received multiple awards and honorable mentions, including the 2017 Judges Choice Award in the 30 Years of Vision at Arts in the Village Leesburg. Kathleen is a member of the Loudoun Sketch Club.

In her own words, “… My paintings are my diary. They are about the places I’ve lived and now live. They evoke memories of events and things that were and are part of my life at the time. My art is a visual reality but goes deeper because it is heartfelt…”

In addition to our Thomas Balch Library exhibit, Kathleen’s work may currently be seen in Loudoun Sketch Club’s Beautiful Loudoun exhibit at the Loudoun County Government Center. We love her work and know that you will too.

FOLPA’s exhibit at Thomas Balch is on view in the lower level conference room until the end of the year. 208 West Market Street, downtown Leesburg.

Beautiful Loudoun may be seen in the Government Center’s Gallery One until January 9, 2020. 1 Harrison Street, downtown Leesburg.

If you think you might be interested in owning one of Kathleen Howsare's paintings, please contact us at [email protected]
