Since the days are getting shorter and it's getting dark earlier, businesses should take a moment to update their outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting serves the following purposes:
🔹 Aesthetics: Illuminate the exterior of the business
🔹 Security: Illuminate the grounds near driveways or other entry points
🔹 Utility: Illuminate the walkways to help people navigate to and from the business safely

How can you achieve energy-efficient outdoor lighting? Here are some tips:
🔹 Consider LED floodlights with combined photosensors and motion sensors in the place of other security lighting options.
🔹 Ensure outdoor light fixtures have reflectors, deflectors, or covers to make more efficient use of the light source and help reduce light pollution.
🔹 Remember, security and utility lighting does not necessarily need to be bright to be effective.

We continue with compost Wednesdays at Mill Run. We are up to 454 pounds of food composted in less than 2 months. That is 61 pounds less methane from landfill emissions. And most importantly, we are teaching are kids that they can do something fun and interesting to combat climate change.

Why is this pumpkin smiling? It’s getting composted instead of being thrown in the landfill! While I love seeing your creativity, chopping up your pumpkin will help us for a couple reasons: 1) They’ll take up less space so more pumpkins can fit in the drop off bins and 2) It’ll be easier for the microbes to break it down.

.
Food Loop will host a drop off day at the Leesburg Farmers Market soon, details to come for when!

🍂 Daylight Saving ends at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 7. Roll that time back an hour before bed tonight! ⏰

The US Department of Energy studied the impact of the extended Daylight Saving Time on energy consumption. The research found that the extra four weeks of Daylight Saving Time (instituted in 2007) saved about 0.5 percent in total electricity per day - equivalent to the amount of energy used by 100,000 households for an entire year!

Green cleaning services are important for families who want to create the safest indoor environment possible for themselves, their pets and their guests. Chemical ingredients in common household products can contain toxins that can make us sick, but green cleaning services can reduce or eliminate these health risks. ✅

Don't forget, our Native Plant Sale is this coming Saturday, Sept. 18, on the lawn at Arts Herndon, starting at 9am. We have some really cool new stickers for the first 50 people who purchase plants. I've said this before, but I'll say it again, Fall is the best time to plant--the soil is warm, the temperature is moderating, plant roots have plenty of time to get established so they'll be ready to bloom beautifully next year. For a preview, the Obedient Plant is in full bloom in the Runnymede garden and the pollinators are loving it! Hope to see you Saturday!

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is considering adopting a new five-cent tax on disposable plastic bags provided to consumers at grocery stores, convenience stores, and drug stores in the county. The purpose of the tax is to curb our collective use of disposable plastic bags, to reduce the amount of plastic waste in our local waterways and the damage it causes.

A public hearing about this proposed tax ordinance is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 4:30 PM at the Fairfax County Government Center. County residents and stakeholders are encouraged to submit written testimony or to sign up to testify in person before noon on September 14, 2021. More information on testifying at the public hearing is available call 703-324-3151 TTY 711 or visit https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/environment-energy-coordination/disposable-plastic-bag-tax-fairfax-county

It’s amazing how many pounds of food scraps can be composted in a small space. You’re looking at about 500 lbs of food scraps. This particular batch is from 25 pick up subscribers and 3 drop off locations. So many households and yet there’s plenty of space for more.
.
.
Since being at Gathering Springs in May, we’ve composted roughly 18,000 lbs of food scraps. Just imagine if there were more hubs on farms, homesteads, and backyards in Loudoun. Together, we can compost for our community without trucking scraps all over the place. I’m getting too excited. More later 🤓💚

Shoutout to Loudoun County Government and it’s Board of Supervisors for being ahead at the environmental care and voting in favor of a 5-cent plastic bag tax starting at some point of 2022!!! . This initiative has proven to be very efficient in drastically reducing the use of unnecessary plastic and incentive the use of reusable bags 🎉🎉🎉 . This is a huge step in the right direction of refusing and reusing! Plus, this is a completely avoidable tax, so we have a whole year to prepare and educate ourselves about it 🤗🤗🤗 . Way to go Loudoun! And thanks Supervisor Koran Saines for making this happen!
