Blue Angels Announce 2022 Executive Officer

PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Air Training Rear Adm. Robert Westendorff named Cmdr. Jonathan Fay as the incoming executive officer of the 2022 Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Fay attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in economics and received his commission, May 2000.

“It is an incredible honor to join Cmdr. Kesselring in guiding this extraordinary organization through its 76th season,” Fay said. “The seriousness of this job is not one to be taken lightly. I am humbled by the legacy I will follow and excited to learn from this highly skilled group of Sailors and Marines.”

Fay was designated a naval flight officer in January 2002, and reported to the “Shamrocks” of Sea Control Squadron (VS) 41, at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, San Diego, for initial training in the S-3B Viking. He reported to NAS Jacksonville, Florida, in October 2002, where he completed an eastern Mediterranean Sea deployment aboard aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Throughout his career, Fay completed multiple combat tours in support of both OIF and Operation Enduring Freedom.

In September 2005, Fay reported to the “Warbucks” of Training Squadron (VT) 4 as an instructor. During this tour he was selected for transition to the P-3C Orion due to the retirement of the S-3B Viking.

In November 2017, Fay was selected as a Navy Legislative Fellow in Washington D.C., and served in the personal office of a member of congress. During this tour on Capitol Hill he supported the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, assisting in the passage of the fiscal year 2018 and 2019 defense appropriations legislation.

Fay is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, earning a Master’s in Business Administration, in addition to advanced certificates in space systems and anti-submarine warfare.

Fay will join Blue Angels Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brian Kesselring and Blue Angels Command Master Chief Eric McDermott to assume his role for the 2022 show season following the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show at NAS Pensacola, scheduled Nov. 6.

The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the teamwork and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps through flight demonstrations and community outreach while inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country. Since 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 496 million fans. The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform 54 flight demonstrations at 27 locations across the United States and Canada in 2021. Remembering Jenn.

*Commemorating Captain Jenn Casey’s legacy of inspiration*

Lieutenant-Colonel Denis Bandet, 431 Air Demonstration (AD) Squadron Commander:

“Today marks one year since the tragedy that took the life of our friend and teammate, 431 AD Squadron and Snowbirds’s Public Affairs Officer, Captain Jenn Casey.

Jenn Casey embodied the very best of what it means to be a Snowbird. Enthusiastic, warm, witty, a true team player, a leader and an innovative powerhouse. The trust that we had in her to connect with the public was absolute.

Our core mission is to inspire, while also representing the amazing men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, and she was one of our best. Her insight and innovation connected us to you, our public, better than ever before and she ensured our missions were met every day.

Her role in our success was only made more clear last year during Operation INSPIRATION where she connected us with millions of Canadians across the country through our social media channels and media interviews. She was the true force and heart behind Op INSPIRATION and it was thanks to her hard work and dedication that the mission was so successful

This year, we will again be flying under Op INSPIRATION and carrying on Jenn’s legacy as we attend air shows and conduct flybys across Canada and the United States. We are also proud to have the 2021 CF-18 Demonstration Team joining us on our mission, which is especially moving as Jenn was asked to become a Snowbird following her incredible work as the 2018 CF-18 Demo Team Public Affairs Officer.

We are delighted to continue pursuing Jenn’s vision of inspiration and connection. We know it would put a smile on her face to see how many of you she touched and to see the outpouring of love coming from Canadians all over the country and around the world.

Thank you for your support, for remembering her and for loving her as much as we did. We know that her indomitable spirit will live on in each and every one of you whose life she touched. We will carry her enthusiasm with us always.”

Just in case you needed some sense of scale on the new U.S. Navy Blue Angels Super Hornet upgrade...

Super Hornet Sunday

After flying the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet for 34 years the U.S. Navy Blue Angels have transitioned to the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet. This composite photo of the F/A-18C Hornet on the left and the F/A-18E Super Hornet on the right shows the differences between the aircraft to good effect. The aircraft are to scale.

Here are three visual cues to distinguish the Super Hornet from the Hornet:

The leading edge extensions (LEX) are larger and have a different shape.
The engine intakes are rectangular instead of oval.
There is a dogtooth in the leading edge of the wing at the wing fold.

The photo of the F/A-18C "Charlie" Hornet being flown by Blue Angel #5 Lead Solo Lieutenant Ryan Chamberlain was taken during the 2016 Wings Over Houston Airshow held at Ellington Field October 22-23, 2016.

The photo of the F/A-18E "Echo" Super Hornet being flown by Blue Angel #5 Lead Solo Commander Ben Walborn was taken in February 2021 during the Blue Angels' winter training at NAF El Centro.

General information

ICAS was founded in 1967 as a trade and professional association by industry professionals to protect and promote their interests in the growing North American air show marketplace. At the time, this small group of air show event organizers and performers recognized the need for standardization of industry practices in key areas such as safety and business practices that could only be achieved collectively. They knew that -- for such standardization to occur -- the industry needed to act and speak with a single voice and that voice was established in ICAS. Today, the organization’s mission statement has evolved a bit, but still focuses on the core principles around which the organization was created: 1) to maintain safety; 2) to serve as an information resource on air show issues for those within and outside the industry; 3) to provide for the training and continuing education needs of ICAS members and air show professionals generally; and 4) to promote the air show industry to the media, Corporate North America and the general public.

David Buck, a Delta Captain living in Senoia set this up with Buck's help. Please chip in... Senoia residents: A tragedy occurred on our doorstep last night. As many of you know, Senoia has had for many years a fly-in community called Big T airport. It is located adjacent to Highway 16 near Circle K/McDonalds. A number of our residents live on that grass runway and fly their planes in and out. One of the residents is the Sorenson family. Mark Sorenson is a world-class airshow performer and airline Captain. His air show flying partner, Mark Nowosielski, is originally from South Africa and resided in Florida. Yesterday Mark Nowosielski flew a newly-acquired aircraft into Big T and picked up Mark Sorenson’s teen aged son and took him for a ride. Something happened and a crash occurred and both perished. To say this is an unspeakable tragedy is an understatement. The Sorenson’s are clearly grieving and I’m sure Mark Nowosielski’s family is well. This is a perfect time to step up as a community and shower the Sorenson’s (and Nowosielski family) with some Senoia love. ❤️ 👉🏻 PLEASE give them privacy and don’t reach out to them at this time. But I’d like to help spearhead collecting some money from their Senoia neighbors and surrounding community to help pay for funeral and other costs. One need that exists is Mark Nowosielski’s Mother will need to fly out from South Africa for the funeral. That will be costly. And I’m sure there are other needs as well. Some of you may remember that I spearheaded the fund raising to “resurrect” the chiming clock at Senoia’s main intersection. I raised funds through GoFundMe. As this has gotten bigger, it’s clear that GoFundMe is going to be the best, and safest, way to continue to raise funds. If you’d like to contribute, here are your options: 👉🏻GoFundMe: gofundme.com/f/twin-tigers-memorial-fund 👉🏻Checks (👉🏻made out to Mark Sorenson) or CASH can be dropped off at Senoia Coffee Company (thank you Brent and April Watson Anderson) Every dollar helps. Let’s send some Senoia love these hurting families’ way. Thank you! Special thanks to another local world-class airshow performer Buck Roetman for his help setting this up. Buck is very close with these families and lost dear friends in this tragedy.
More than just an environment to conduct business, the ICAS Convention in Las Vegas proved to be a great opportunity to meet many of my heros and share countless amazing stories

APPLE VALLEY AIRSHOW TIPS: Bring your family and friends! Otherwise, they will be jealous they didn't go. Get there early for best parking which is free! You don't want to end up in the tumbleweeds. Plus, you will be totally annoyed if you missed the F-16 because it's flying early. Bring the kids, because they are going to have such a great time they will sleep well that night. Wear sunscreen, because it is going to be sunny and gorgeous and if you played hookie to go to the airshow your colleagues will know you went to the airshow if you show up to work with a sunglasses tan. Wear sunglasses, hats, etc. because you know you look cool in them. Bring a folding chair if you want. This may help you get so comfi, you won't want to get up and you will not miss any of the performers. Bleachers are available free of charge. You can bring a stadium cushion for the bleachers. Charge your cell phone and maybe bring a back up booster because you we know are going to take a lot of photos and a TON of selfies! And you know you are going to share them with all your friends on social media. Bring cash cause you know you want a blue snow cone so you can take a selfie and post it so you can let your friends know you are at the Apple Valley Airshow. Anyway, ATMs available at minimal fees. What's permitted and prohibited is found online. Do click on the FAQs page, you wouldn't want to bring a large beach umbrella or a large cooler and have to walk back to the car. That would make anyone cranky. Read all the FAQs at http://applevalleyairshow.com/faq No dogs or pets allowed. Service animals ok. However, the jet noise may freak them out and the asphalt may be hot for their paws. You know they like to sleep on the couch when you are gone. So, come out and have a great time. It will be a ton more fun than chilling on the couch. For more info, go to www.applevalleyairshow.com. F-16 Viper Demo Team #ViperDemoTeam #AppleValleyAirshow
