This month, our featured volunteer is Margaret “Peggy” Kopp. Peggy has been an amazing asset to us as she drives Care Receivers to medical appointments, visits with them, helps us with various LVC events and delivers food to our Care Receivers, too. She also volunteers for Loudoun Hunger Relief and helps pack meals each week for our Care Receivers.

Peggy joined LVC 5 years ago as a volunteer after she had retired.
She was born and raised in Detroit Michigan, in a family of 8 other
siblings! Needless to say her house was a busy one. Her parents instilled
in her and her siblings a sense of helping their neighbor no matter where they lived. After
Peggy’s father died suddenly 12 years ago, her mother wanted to stay in her
house. It worked well for awhile then she starting having some health
problems so Peggy and her siblings would take turns staying with her. She
lived till she was 93, happily in her own home. Peggy found from that
experience that helping our elderly neighbors would be the best way of continuing to
honor her mother.
Peggy says she has “met the most wonderful, interesting people over the years and I am
so grateful for Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers to share in their ministry.”

Everyone at LVC and at Loudoun Hunger Relief thinks Peggy is kind, funny and a heck of a baker. If you ever get to try any of her mother’s recipes, don’t pass up on the chance!

Thank you so much for choosing LVC, Peggy and for honoring your mother by giving so many of our Care Receivers friendship and dignity. We are so thankful to know you and have you be part of the LVC/LHR family!

We discovered that listening to Podcasts continues to be a growing trend for those who drive for a living and spend their time driving as part of a volunteer commitment.

We would love to have you volunteer with us and to help you get caught up on your podcasts. One podcast that is a favorite of a staff member is #buried It USA story of a mother who disappeared in the early 90’s and is still missing. The story is available as part of an #npr podcast series but is also part of #ketr radio in Texas. It is narrated by #georgehale and has more twists and turns than an old roller coaster.

Feel free to call us to get more details on volunteering with us and let us know what your favorite podcast is!

10/12/2019

Our featured volunteer this month is Robert (Bob) Fox. Bob has been with us for the better part of the year and continues to assist our organization in many ways with food deliveries, providing transportation for medical patients and lending time doing office chores. Bob is inspired by his mom’s life long charitable contributions on Long Island. His (93) year old mom still provides transportation for “the old folks” even though they are many years her junior!

Bob started his charitable endeavors back on Long Island in the 90’s where he became of member of Joe Dugan’s “Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang” http://www.newspaper.licatholic.org/news/helping-needy-through-%E2%80%98hospitality-too%E2%80%99-program . Bob would deliver prepared PB&J sandwiches to the homeless shelters in Harlem, New York on weekends. Bob continued to work with the homeless when moving to Leesburg in 2005 becoming the Director of St. John’s Homeless Ministry providing food and comfort on Sunday evenings at Loudoun County’s winter warming shelter. For several years Bob was a mentor and house manager of Loudoun Aftercare which was a fellowship of the Prison Ministry in Lansdowne.

Bob has promised to continue lending his assistance to our program until he finds his next employment opportunity and we can’t thank him enough for all of his help. He’s kind, reliable, funny and just an all around great guy!

If you’re in the market for an extremely talented and hard working Senior Procurement and Vendor Relations Manager, let us know and we can help schedule an interview with Bob and you’ll be sure to offer him a position with your company! https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertjohnfox/ .

10/05/2019

We have rare moments in life when we are fortunate enough to meet someone who radiates light and passion for everything life has to offer. When we do, we tend to hold tightly to this person and cherish every second we are given with them. It’s not hard to imagine that this is because this person is the epitome of raw beauty.

At Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers, this is exactly how each one of us feels about Yuvinka. She is one of our younger Care Receivers and she has a fire in her that is contagious. She has always fought so hard for everything she’s had and for everyone she loves.

When she was a young woman in Bolivia, she had a job she loved and excelled at it. Unfortunately, her parents fell on hard times and were facing losing their house. Determined to save the family home, Yuvinka got a Visa, came to America and hit the ground running. She worked tirelessly for two years. She eradicated her parents debt and saved their home.

During her time here, she met the man she would marry and ultimately decided to stay in America. She continued to work night and day so that she could build a life for herself and her husband. Eventually, her daughter was born, and Yuvinka was elated. She continued to work, sometimes only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night so she could give her family a good life.

One day, a golden opportunity presented itself. An office job, close to her babysitter opened up and it was for an apartment complex. Yuvinka was hesitant to apply because she hadn’t mastered the English language and had no prior office experience. It would also mean a pay cut but more time with her daughter (and later her son). Naturually, none of this stoped her for long. Yuvinka decided to make it happen and she got the job!

She was so proud. She had arrived...she was a professional working woman now. She even taught herself how to draft executive correspondence. That fiery spirit was in her element!

Not only did she excel at her office job, she held onto it through a second, difficult pregnancy. She always went to work with a smile and never had a complaint about anything, no matter what happened. This amazing woman has worked tirelessly, even when she was tired, even when she felt very sick, even as her body was failing her. Today, this firecracker continues to fight, even with every last card stacked against her. Recently, she had said she had hoped she could emanate a message to everyone and that is “fight...fight for everything you want in life...fight forever and never give up”.

Every single one of us at LVC have been deeply touched by this fiercely impassioned soul. We love her dearly and we are so grateful to have met her. She inspires us and reminds us why we fight so hard for all of our Care Receivers.

Please keep Yuvinka in your hearts. Let her message fill your days and fight forever for everything you want. She would be so excited to know her words and her story inspired people to be warriors, just like her!

Today's spotlight shines a light on a corps of volunteers bringing dignity and quality of life to our neighbors...

Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers is a community of volunteers helping the elderly and adults with disabilities to maintain independence and quality of life through assisted medical and non-medical transportation, supportive services that include shopping, grocery deliveries, errands, visiting, minor home repair/maintenance, money management and financial education. LVC is seeking a capacity-building grant that will expand their programs to help mainly low-income elderly and disabled adults to age in place. Go to lvccaregivers.org to learn more or to volunteer.

Here at Loudoun Volunteer Care Givers, we truly appreciate our volunteers. They make what we do possible and they are some of the best people you’ll ever hope to meet!
This month, we are putting the spotlight on one of our new and fantastic volunteers: Gary Jewell.
Gary spent many years living off the land in Montana, growing beets, raspberries and other delicious produce, all while running his business of making amazing creations out of wood with a chainsaw! Despite his roots in Montana, he was actually born in Leesburg Hospital, right here in Loudoun County. He grew up on Edwards Ferry Road and attended county high school. Both of his parents were also born and raised here in Loudoun and his dad was a self-made man who started and ran a local trucking company that specialized in the transportation of livestock. Gary has many fascinating stories about his long history with the county and how it changed over the course of his childhood and young adulthood.
Gary also has a long history of volunteering. In Montana, he made the news for donating his time, talents and creations to many of the elderly residents in Libby, Montana. He even made the front page of the paper a few times! In recent months, Gary returned to Loudoun to help care for his elderly mother. Lucky for us, Gary came to volunteer with us in July and has been a food delivery volunteer ever since. He even has a few regular Care Receivers who think he is an all-around great guy (hero) and we absolutely agree with them!
If you are interested in being a hero (like Gary) to those in need in our county, please give our office a call to further inquire about volunteering: 703-779-8617 or send us an email at [email protected] ! We look forward to hearing from you!

Our Story

Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers is a non profit located in Loudoun County, Virginia. We are committed to making a difference in the lives of seniors and chronically ill adults. We utilize volunteers and our services are free to the user.

Our three programs include assisted medical and non-medical transportation, supportive services that ensure our care receivers are able to get their groceries, prescriptions and dentures, and our money management program. By providing these services, our care receivers can remain in their own homes longer, happier and healthier. They can get to their medical appointments, get food, receive help with home maintenance, remain connected to the community, and know that they are not forgotten about. Isolation and loneliness are major factors in the decline of health in older and disabled adults; we work to reduce these problems.

Our Student Caregiver Program ages 11-18, provides opportunities for youths in middle and high school to provide supportive services assistance and quality of life events to some of the county's most vulnerable citizens.
