Have you ever heard of the term Adverse Childhood Experiences (otherwise known as ACEs)? ACEs are traumatic events that happen during childhood that can affect a person’s mental and physical health and well being as an adult. Maltreatments such as child abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect can cause chronic stress that affects early brain development. For those who have experienced ACEs, there are many ways to cope and ultimately, reduce levels of stress. These responses include seeking help from a mental health professional, meditation, physical exercise, fostering positive relationships between children and their caregivers, and more. To learn more about ACEs and how you can help to prevent the effects of toxic stress due to a higher ACE score, please click on the link below.

We honor children who have been victim to child abuse. We stand for those children who do not have voices to stand for themselves. As the wind circles through these pinwheels, we remember, stand, and advocate for the little ones knowing this is only a chapter in their story. Stand with us. #ChildAbuseAwarenessMonth #LAWSsurvivorstrong

It’s important to talk to your child about body safety, so they know how to respond to inappropriate behavior and speak up when something doesn’t feel quite right. There are many resources available including books and websites that will help you talk to your child about this topic in an age appropriate way. Some of our favorite books include “Your Body Belongs to You” by Cornelia Maude Spelman, “I Said No! A Kid-to-kid Guide to Keeping Private Parts Private” by Zack and Kimberly King, and “My Body Belongs to Me From My Head to My Toes” created by Pro Familia. These books talk about what parts of the body are private, healthy boundaries, and how to identify trusted adults. The key to preventing child sexual abuse is to start having these conversations when kids are young and keep having them!

Meet our Youth and Children’s Advocate, Amy! Amy started working at LAWS as a volunteer in 2008 and has been in her current role for 6 years. On a day to day basis, she provides crisis intervention, advocacy and support to children and families at both our community services center and emergency shelter. She is also the primary point of contact for all children’s counseling referrals. As the Youth and Children’s Advocate, she feels “privileged to serve children and families exposed to domestic and sexual violence and grateful to work with such an amazing team”.

Meet our Youth and Children’s Counselor, Meghan! Meghan provides short term crisis counseling for youth and children who reside in Loudoun County, who have been impacted by domestic violence or who have experienced abuse and/or neglect. Short term crisis counseling at LAWS is intended to be a safe environment for children to gain non-judgmental support through difficult like events which may include: crisis intervention, psycho-education, safety planning and developing coping and self-care skills. Meghan also works closely with the non-offending parents or caregivers to ensure they are receiving the appropriate support they need.

Meet our Youth and Children’s Therapist, Emily! Emily sees children who have been interviewed at our Child Advocacy Center and provides longer term, evidence based therapy (TF-CBT) to clients who are experiencing a high rate of trauma symptoms. Emily works with children ranging from age 3-18. Her favorite part of her job is getting to know each of her clients and seeing the changes that occur within each child during the course of therapy.

Virginia's protective order and firearms laws have been changing rapidly! Did you know that it's against the law for anyone subject to a Final 2-Year Protective Order to possess, purchase, or transport firearms? Sexual and domestic violence advocates have been hard at work implementing these new laws and keeping survivors safe. Yet, at the same time, we've seen firearms purchases AND domestic violence on the rise as a direct result of this pandemic.

◾ In the U.S., an estimated 1.92 million guns were purchased in October 2020 alone.

◾ In VA, requests for emergency shelter through domestic violence programs increased drastically in 2020, with one agency reporting a 150% increase in the number of people living in their shelter as compared to 2019.

◾ In VA, over 60% of IPV homicides are committed with the use of a firearm.

◾ The presence of a firearm, regardless of who owns it, makes it 5 times more likely that a victim will be killed.

We have a lot of work to continue doing to keep people safe. That's why we've partnered with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, The Carol Adams Foundation, Inc., Giffords Law Center, Virginia Victim Assistance Network, Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter, Project Horizon, Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and other advocates to build a Virginia-based Domestic Violence and Firearms Toolkit: Best Practices for Advocates and Communities. Be on the lookout as we release new resources and have a final toolkit ready for public use this Summer!
