Bearing in mind the situation in Afghanistan over the last week, Coalition CEO, David Walker has the following note to share:

We are distraught and disheartened by the abrupt collapse of the Afghan government which our country has supported and defended for 20 years. Thousands of Americans have given their lives and many thousands more have been grievously wounded in that conflict, physically and mentally. To see this tragedy unfolding before our eyes is for many of us simply unbearable. It makes us question not only the wisdom of our leaders but the very righteousness of our cause - democratic government itself. We strove mightily to show the Afghans the way, but the forces of darkness prevailed over them and us.

Despair is not an option. We are heir to a long tradition of courage in the face of adversity and refusal to yield to setbacks. Not so many years ago we were all watching our great "experiment" in Vietnam dissolve amid panicky crowds trying to board aircraft leaving Saigon. That was a major defeat for our country and a challenge to our values. But that was 46 years ago and we are still here, still offering the world an example of a democratic system that works, still trying to share our vision of a just society with those multitudes around the world who hunger for freedom. There are many such people in Afghanistan who have had a glimpse of that freedom and who now face a dark future. This outcome is much more tragic for them than it is for us.

Some 245 years ago the architects of our great experiment in democracy set sail on very uncertain waters. Few expected them to succeed. They did succeed but the results are not guaranteed. We have been obliged to defend our vision of a just democratic government time and time again. As Thomas Jefferson said long ago, the tree of liberty must be occasionally refreshed with the blood of tyrants and of patriots. Each generation must shoulder its burden and can only expect the same of generations that follow.

This chapter in that ongoing saga is a setback - but only a setback. The evil we fought against in Afghanistan remains a vile threat to civilization. We will continue to fight for freedom and justice with every fiber of our being. Those who have fought, suffered and died on Afghanistan's plains were heroes of freedom and their legacy is carved in stone. We honor them and the cause they fought for. We lost a battle, but the struggle continues. In time we will prevail.

Today is #NationalNonprofitDay! What better way to celebrate than by donating to your favorite nonprofit?

We are happy to share that our program spending accounts for 94% of our budget. That number speaks volumes about our management!

We are running a tight ship and using almost all of our resources to benefit those we serve- wounded veterans and their families.

Please consider making a donation by visiting our website: www.saluteheroes.org/give-help/

You can also help us spread the word: Like, Comment, & Share! Thanks for all you do! #SaluteHeroes

Ours hearts are incredibly heavy following the events transpiring in Kabul this weekend.

Since 2004, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has assisted thousands of veterans severely injured in the war on terror. Many of the veterans we serve made unimaginable sacrifices in liberating Afghanistan from the oppressive Taliban regime and like us, you may be struggling today and in the coming time with justifiable feelings of anger, disappointment, grief and invalidation.

Please know that you are not alone, and that your sacrifice, the sacrifice of your brothers and sisters, your families, and your loved ones was not in vain. The news coverage today and in the coming weeks is going to be bleak. It is going to show the very worst of what is happening to the Afghan people, to our embassy and to the democracy your sacrifice helped to instill.

What it is not going to show you is an entire generation that has been born and raised in freedom. Young girls who have had the opportunity to attend school, graduate, vote, and begin careers because they were able to live without fear and oppression. Young men who will have been raised with the hope of freedom and liberty.

The price that has been paid for that is steep, and it is a price we cannot and must not, pay again but we can live in the hope that the last 20 years have inspired the people of Afghanistan to secure their own futures. We wait with baited breath, praying that they will stand up and fight back.

While your sacrifice served to liberate and inspire the Afghan people it also inspired and provided safety for our own nation. With the Taliban stronghold dismantled and their leaders scattered and bought to justice, the threat they pose to our freedoms has been greatly reduced. We live today without fear of a repeat of the tragic events of 2001 because of you.

Below is a list of resources that we encourage you to utilize if you are struggling today, and as always you can reach out to the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes if we are able to support you during this time:

Thank you so much for your generous support for our family! This just paid for our Thanksgiving dinner!!!
Opportunity for Veterans! New Musicals Inc (NMI) is adapting veteran's stories into ten-minute musicals to be filmed as part of a web-series to honor veterans. Veterans whose stories are selected for development will receive a $1000 honorarium and hold on to the rights of their stories. Don't let the "musical" aspect dissuade you. No musical talent needed to apply. NMI just needs a compelling story from your military background – just one story – not a compilation -- and they will bring a composer, lyricist, and professional actor together to turn it into song. They will also welcome you into the collaboration process if you want to be included on the creative side. See the link for info and a very short video that explains the project. Deadline is November 20. www.nmi.org/veterans

The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has played a great part in my life during my transition from military life to civilian life. I did not feel judged but did feel their willingness to help. They answered all my questions and also provided details regarding eligibility and the next steps during the process. They helped me during my most challenges times of my life. All it took was for me to ask for help. Thank you CSAH for your support. No Veteran left behind.

He told me yesterday that his family doesn't understand why he would commemorate the day he was injured. They had never heard it termed "Alive Day". It is 100% something to celebrate!🎉 Happy Alive Day Rudy, and thank you for your service to our country, and your continued service to your community. 🇺🇸
