Basically media is any form or means by which we receive information.

Today, that means a whole slew of avenues and options from which we can get info from. From email newsletters to YouTube channels from audiobooks to online courses and even video games, the channels are limitless.

Which can lead to overwhelm and inevitably surrendering power and control of our own agency to be selective in what we consume.

But that’s only part of the power that media has over us. There is more.

πŸ€” How are you using media these days? Or how is it using you?? And what does this have to do with #humantrafficking?

#takeyourpowerback #preventhumantrafficking #awarenessiskey

πŸ›  Media is only a tool that can be used for good or bad depending on the intention of those who create content and those who consume it.

πŸ‘Ž There are always bad actors when it comes to both camps, especially in the realm of human trafficking.

✊If you’re in it to end #humantrafficking, it comes down to the choices we make (or don’t make) in using media as a tool for good to fight back.

πŸ€” Which camp are you in?

There are two ways to look at it.

Dreams can inspire and motivate you to hustle hard in making them a reality. They can take you places where you never thought you'd imagine being.

It's that desire and longing for your dreams that can also be a weakness in the eyes of a trafficker.

Traffickers are opportunists - always looking for vulnerabilities to exploit.

If you share your dreams with them, they'd be happy to respond and comply in helping you make your dreams come true.

And if they make it sound too good to be true, it most likely is.

So don't discount your dreams. Don't knock them down because they were birthed in you for a reason. You were meant to do something big and great in this world.

But also just remember that not everyone out there is willing to help you make it happen without giving something back in return.

Hold onto your dreams, nourish them and help them to flourish, but also trust your gut when it comes to someone offering to help you get there easily and out of the blue.

They're not for you - they're only out for themselves.

Happy Monday!!

Brothels are complicit in s*xually exploiting women and living off half of their earnings (or more!).

The women are required to pay "the house" for their daily rent plus meals. They're also required to tip the bartenders, housekeeping, cashiers and managers.

To put it plainly, the women hand over 75%-80% of their earnings. And if they're trafficked, they give the remainder to their pimp.

The ladies are also not free to come and go as they please - locked down in a prison like setting for weeks on end.

If the women do not perform to the house's standards, they are either "kicked out or sent to a lower-performing brothel."

And don't be misled to believe that these women escape harm from being in a "safe environment."

On the contrary.

Pimps use the brothels as a "form of punishment and control," where they are r***d, dehumanized and beaten - where the women are no strangers to post-traumatic stress disorder.

Don't be fooled.

Legal brothels are fronts for allowing women to be s*xually exploited and profit off of their bodies.

No woman ever deserves to be treated this way. EVER.

#Legalizingprostitution is NOT the answer to abating #s*xtrafficking.

Formerly trafficked for 10 years, Rebekah Charleston is fighting back and using her experience to empower and serve the ladies in the life she was once enslaved in.

The personal trauma she experienced in her family life led her down a vulnerable path right into the hands of traffickers.

During the time Rebekah was trafficked, she spent some time in Nevada's legal brothels, where her pimp would send her as "a form of punishment and control."

Rebekah escaped her trafficking situation when the feds got involved.

She has earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in criminology, was pardoned by former President Trump for a tax evasion charge brought on by her trafficking situation in 2020, and courageously filed a lawsuit against the state of Nevada "arguing that laws protecting legalized prostitution were in contradiction with established laws against human trafficking."

We commend Rebekah for her advocacy and activism in the anti-human trafficking space and recognize her as a modern-day abolitionist in her fight to quell #s*xtrafficking for good.

πŸ€” How does this quote speak to you?

For us, it frames the role of women in society as being of great importance.

Women literally birth the future. 🀰🀱

None of us would be here if it were not for a woman!

Women create, define, mold, and give their whole heart into raising future generations. ❀️

A child's first language is called "mother tongue" or your "mother language." Why? Because from birth, the child spends most of its waking moments in the bosom of or near their mother.

Women bring an element of life, nourishment, peace, comfort and joy to the world that is undeniable.

So as we continue to celebrate women this month, let us revel in women's true natural power that commands respect and dignity.

Let's be clear, there is a difference between prostitution and s*x trafficking. However, s*x trafficking can take on the form of prostitution.

The typical definition of prostitution is that it is a consensual transaction of exchanging a s*xual act for money or something of value between two knowing and willing adults.

S*x trafficking involves NO element of choice for the victim, who is recruited, harbored, or transported through the use of force, fraud, or coercion (exempt for minors because they cannot consent!) for the purposes of s*xual exploitation.

Don't get it twisted - whether or not the women are willing participants or held captives to s*xually exploit their bodies for pimps - BOTH are being s*xually exploited. PERIOD.

But like this truth bomb says - s*x trafficking looks like much more than your typical prostituted woman.

Victims of s*x trafficking are forced to work in the legal brothels of Nevada, illegal residential brothels, es**rt services, strip clubs, massage parlors, and even in po*******hy.

Prostitution in all of its forms is NOT a victimless crime. #s*xworkisnotrealwork πŸ‘ˆ we'll save that topic for another time!

So what can you do??

When a child enters foster care they have already experienced some form of trauma which had put them there.

In fact, more than 60% of children/youth in the foster care system experienced neglect from their biological home.

Traffickers instinctively know this and through the grooming process provide the victim with the love, attention, and affection that they've missed out on.

The child/youth may have also experienced being used as a paycheck in some form back at home, so when the trafficker later exploits their body to earn them money, it may not faze them at all.

Children/youth on a national average move foster placements/families around 3-4 times. This not only causes additional trauma, but studies show that every time there is a move, children lose about 6 months of their emotional and intellectual development.

To put it into perspective, a 16-year old youth in foster care who's moved 4 times may operate on a 14-year old level or even younger.

All of these instabilities and broken attachments to foster families, case workers, peers, etc. create even greater vulnerability in the youth, which cultivate the perfect environment for the trafficker to take advantage of.

Awareness is always the prerequisite to taking action. Because if you don't know what you don't know how can you help a cause effectively?

Never underestimate the power of what women can do when they get together united under a single cause - in this case, the emancipation of slaves.

This timeless quote projects as much power and truth today as I'm sure it did during the time those words were spoken.

There is power in the unspoken heart of sisterhood. Power waiting to be unleashed and go to work at creating a more just and equal world.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that women and girls account for "99% of victims in the commercial s*x industry." (src: "Global Estimates of Modern Slavery: Forced Labour and Forced Marriage," Geneva, September 2017.)

In 2019, the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline reported 15,222 female victims of human trafficking fielded from the number of calls they received compared to 3,003 male victims.

In 2020, Las Vegas Metro Police Department identified 103 child female victims and 126 adult female victims of s*x trafficking. This is in pale comparison to 3 child male victims and 2 adult male victims of s*x trafficking.

Human traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals in order to gain power and control over another person. Historically, women and girls have been referred to as the "weaker" and more subordinate s*x, especially when it comes to the commercial s*x industry.

S*x sells indeed. But those who are most impacted are our sisters, daughters, mothers and friends.

There are many ways to combat this issue. We can attack it from the rehabilitation side and provide wrap-around support to victims of s*x trafficking. We can attack the demand side of it and/or go after prosecuting the traffickers. Or we can go further upstream and work to prevent women and girls from becoming vulnerable to traffickers in the first place.

All points of attack are important and needed.

Which one will you join?

It is women who have birthed and have been leaders of nations, innovative changemakers, abolitionists, uber-successful entrepreneurs, artists, literary scholars, geniuses and unforgettable teachers.

Women are an integral part of who we are.

If you were to approach a suspected victim of trafficking and tell them that they are a victim of human trafficking they probably wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about.

You see, most victims don't self-identify.

There are many reasons why, but three main ones are:

βœ… Overwhelming feelings of shame and guilt: Victims, especially if they are children, internalize their abuse and blame themselves for what's happening to them.

βœ… Fear of retaliation by trafficker: Traffickers will demonstrate that their threats are real by following through with them on their other victims.

βœ… Fear of arrest, deportation, or being taken away: If victims are foreign nationals, they're most likely not familiar with how our system works here in America and/or may have had run-ins with corrupt authorities in their own country, which feeds into why there's a real fear of deportation. However, there are protections available to foreign victims of trafficking that would allow them to stay in America for a temporary or long-term amount of time.

In addition, victims may have been coached by their trafficker to not trust those in authority because they are their enemies, ready to arrest them or take them away from their loved ones.

It is important to remember that victims are NOT trying to be defiant, uncooperative or dismissive.

Victims of #humantrafficking have endured incredible trauma and massive psychological manipulation that they are just not cognitively adept to react in coherent ways that we would typically deem admissible.

This requires us to be compassionate, empathetic and adaptable to victims who are still in the crux of their unimaginable situation.

Your good intentions are only good if they are done from a place of understanding, compassion and acceptance; when you can let go of trying to control the situation or generate an outcome that you see is best for the victim.

Because in the end, what is best for the victim is ultimately going to come from them when they're ready.
