The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. By offering the largest scholarships in the country, comprehensive counseling and other support services to students from 7th grade to graduate school, the Foundation is dedicated to ensuring high-performing, low-income students have the support necessary to develop their talents and excel educationally. In addition to its scholarship programs, the Foundation provides grants for innovative, high-impact initiatives that benefit such students. By doing so, the Cooke Foundation seeks to use its resources to end the Excellence Gap, the disparity between the number of low and high income students who reach the top levels of academic performance. Founded in 2000, the Foundation has awarded $130 million in scholarships to 1,900 students and over $80 million in grants. www.jkcf.org

Repost from @ycbonilla

Here’s an old photo from my trip to the UK to celebrate that I’m starting graduate school at the University of Oxford this fall on a FULL RIDE (is this real life?!?!). A few years ago, I thought to myself “it would be incredible to study at Oxford,” and I remember shutting down those feelings as quickly as they came because I was sure I’d never make it there (shoutout to impostor syndrome!) & now I am beyond excited to embark on this new journey and continue being the nerdy sociologist that I was meant to be.
Thank you to @thejkcf for continuing to believe in me and allowing me to pursue my wildest dreams. It is not lost on me how blessed and lucky I am to have this amazing community on my side, and to have a group of people who see my potential and remind me of it, especially when I forget to see it myself. I’m also incredibly grateful to everyone who has been a part of my journey and who helped me with my grad school applications (you know who you are!). And last but not least, this is for my family who have been my biggest support since day 1 and who continue to inspire me to break barriers and continue pursuing my goals.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of one of our charter board members this past Saturday – Stuart Haney.

Stuart delighted in spending time with Cooke Scholars – whether he was discussing their academic interests or their personal ambitions. Stuart reveled in their success and pushed our team here at the Foundation to figure out new ways to support our scholars and alumni and foster their connections with each other.

Our scholars and alumni have shared with us how they in turn reveled in their conversations with him – enjoying the moments when he would regale them with anecdotes from his career working for Mr. Cooke. Stuart would continue these conversations in email – and through his constant presence on LinkedIn.

Stuart spoke of Mr. Cooke’s vision of a network of scholars united by their common bonds across a diverse field of scholarly pursuits and achievements. Our scholars and alumni are the embodiment of that network. Stuart often remarked on how proud he was of them and the community they create daily, and how grateful he was to have been a part of executing Mr. Cooke’s vision.

Below is a link to Stuart’s obituary. He will be missed by all.

Repost @abbymcfee

This fall I will be starting my MFA in poetry at the University of Michigan (@helen_zell_writers_program), as a @thejkcf graduate scholar. Over the past year+, the beauty of this dream (when it was no more than a dream) was its own gift, because of how much support I got to feel from my community. They squeezed into poetry readings to sit beside me, read through many many drafts, lent me books, and talked me through revision-fueled crises. For being held like that, and for the capaciousness of words, and for all of the growing and risking to be done—I’m so grateful.
