We had our first LPEP Rally on Oct. 18th!

This rally revolved around normalizing mental health: empowering youth to rebuild connection after the trauma of covid-19.

They had the chance to have conversations with counselor guest speakers Krista Reinhardt and Kevin Rice. The students had the chance to leave with their beautiful artwork pieces. As they began to draw freely their emotions and drew something that symbolized hope over it.

Our next LPEP Rally will be on Nov. 22nd, we hope more students get the chance to attend these empowering rallies.

Sign up now on our website! We will provide lunch for each student and each student will receive $10 after the rally is over!

Summer camp is officially over! For our final week of camp we introduced different social change artists/projects and had the students choose which project to be a part of. One of the projects revolved around painting for the planet, teaching the students about environmental justice. The other was following Favianna Rodriguez’s artwork project “migration is beautiful,” as the students created different butterfly paintings. This project taught our students about immigration rights. We hope that these projects teach the students about the important role of art in politics and activism. Enjoy the art showcase our students hosted for their parents in these pictures!

We strive to teach out students useful skills and expose them to different forms of art. For our fourth week of camp we had Anne Cordell Moriarty teach our students about EFT tapping points. As well as Areyana Proctor who taught our students about film production and videography. You may be wondering what is EFT tapping? How did the students utilize these skills? Well you won’t have to wait for long, the EFT tapping video will be posted very soon! But for now check out the creative process that went on!

We had an eventful week! We had the pleasure of having officer Ruben lead a bike safety camp for our campers. Our campers left with useful safety skills and a goody bag! We also put those gardening skills to the test as they decorated some beautiful flower planters to take over to the senior center!

As you drive down South Boulder Road into downtown Lafayette, you’ll pass Centaurus High School. You’ll have the chance to see beauty and inspiration as the community embraces DIVERSITY and inclusion.
Our LPEP students gave an impressive and beautiful face lift to this community treasure, which was initially installed in 2003. We’re now going to be stepping out and offering our gifts of murals to more places in Lafayette!
—Please feel free to share your mural ideas and locations with us, and we will see how we can make your art dreams a reality.

Our “What’s Cooking” students spent the past semester learning about cultural dishes, food justice, dietary restrictions and chopping skills. On Monday they took their skills and 4 ingredients to the stage where they competed in our Iron Chef Finale! We had four prizes that went to the most: nutritional value, creativity, taste and presentation. Congrats to our winners and to everyone for such delicious dishes and a fantastic semester!!

The Art for Social Change students have been researching and creating an animal of their choosing that is affected by plastic pollution. These art pieces were made out of plastic materials that the kids recycled from their homes in order to form their animals.

We invite you to head over to The Lafayette Public Library where these art pieces are now displayed! Check them out and learn more about how these endangered animals are affected by plastic pollution.

Let’s open up the conversation #savetheanimals#stopplasticpollution!

Our Art for Social Change classes came together and collaborated on a voting banner! We are extremely amazed with their work and passion to create something which serves to spread the word on why voting is important.

It is displayed at the Lafayette Public Library, next to the voting dropbox during library working hours, and will be inside the building close to the window when the library is closed.

We encourage y’all to come check it out, vote, and take a selfie with our banner and spread the word by using the #GOVOTE! Please tag us if you do, we would love to see your posts!

What have you done to stay busy this summer? How have you and your families made the most of this quarantined season?

Here at The Empowerment Center of East County we have stayed busy by transitioning and hosting our summer camps online. Our youth picked up safely packaged materials every Monday and then joined us online via Google Meets every Tuesday and Thursday. During the month of June we held two camps for Lafayette Youth, "What's Cooking" and "Together We Inspire!".

"What's Cooking" explored the topic of food justice and collaborated to prepare a variety of meals. The students shared family recipes with each other and started a cook book that we hope to share with you all once it is completed with more recipes from the July campers. Check out one students' before and after pictures of their chickpea pasta and fruit bowl!

"Together We Inspire!" campers asked one another the question "what inspires you?" and individually responded onto a mural that is displayed at The Arts Hub in Lafayette. The group also painted local logos to incorporate inspiring aspects within their community. Go check it out! Complete the puzzle by writing or drawing what inspires you in chalk on the moveable pieces and send us a picture!

Both camps were able to come together online and present their final projects to each other, families, and community members.
