Lower Towamensing and Eldred Township residents: be advised that the portion of Lower Smith Gap Road that is east of Blue Mountain Drive is CLOSED and will remain so for most of this week per PennDOT. A drain replacement project is underway, causing closure at 940 Lower Smith Gap Road and resulting in a 12 mile detour. Emergency responders, (Police, Fire, and EMS) have implemented contingency plans for any emergencies east of the closure. Monroe County emergency agencies will provide their assistance to reduce response time. Hopefully the project can be completed early 🤞🏼

The hall is all set up for Friday’s All you can eat spaghetti dinner from 4-7. See you all there.

Members are currently having a coin toss at the usual spots near 534 and 209, so drive by and say hello! Any little bit helps and is extremely appreciated. As some know we are 100% volunteer and 100% self funded. There is NO FIRE TAX in the township. In order to operate and help keep everyone safe, we rely strictly on fundraising and donations from residents. If not able to drive through we do accept donations online. As always we thank everyone for the continued support.

Pennsylvania's School Bus Stopping Law

-Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

-Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.

-Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.

-If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping.

-Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety

Tonight, members had the opportunity to drill at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School just ahead of the school year. We flushed and operated all of the standpipes to make sure they worked properly, as well as extended hose throughout the school, to be able to better assist in the event of a fire. Making sure standpipes are operable, and making sure there’s enough hose to get to every classroom, is critical.

In Case You Don’t Know-Standpipes are piping which are built into multi-story buildings in a vertical position or bridges in a horizontal position, to which fire hoses can be connected, allowing manual application of water to the fire.

Very well put. Even the smallest gesture goes a long way

As temperatures and humidity continue to rise, please consider purchasing and donating a case of bottled water and/or Gatorade to your local first responders. If you leave them at the door, most departments will be able to get them inside in a reasonable amount of time! These little gestures can be the biggest support during hot times!

Fire Chief's Report July 2021,

For the Month of July volunteers were dispatched and responded to 23 emergencies, completed 102 hours of training and participated in 157 hours of fundraising. 1 member successfully attained State Certified Firefighter 1 Certification, bringing us to 10 members trained to Firefighter 1 or higher.

We are always looking to add to our ranks. Firefighters and Fire Police are important to our cause but also are in need of social members to help with our fundraising efforts. You can make contact via Facebook, by calling us at 6106814370 or by stopping by the firehouse.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our breakfast in September on the 19th. We will be opening back up to sit down dine in breakfast, and will be doing all you can eat buffet style for our first breakfast back.

PolkTownship Volunteer Fire Company I was at the 50th year celebration/parade. I just wanted to say “Thank You” for having myself included in the event. Being away from the area for years, I was truly amazed at the renovations of the social hall and the updated fire equipment. One can really say that they are proud to have been part of the organization through the years. What a feeling of pride seeing the many improvements, seeing that ongoing training, certifications etc. are ongoing, also including all the men and women volunteers who continue to serve the community (including the Auxiliary workers) all who make everything a great success! I was able to see many past and current personnel. What a terrific feeling that was! Wishing everyone good health and continuing successes in the Fire company. I’d like to sincerely thank everyone for their great work, I can’t say enough (PROUDLY) and couldn’t help bragging about the Fire Co. to friends and relative! What a great community! There are many people I wish to thank separately, but they know who they are! Sincerely, Robert (Bob) Hornak
