Today we celebrated Lag B’Omer!
We participated in STEAM activities indoors, like building a tower out of clay, straws, and popsicle sticks, and outdoors we had a Color Wars challenge with a fantastic ending - Cereal Box Dominoes! We exceeded our goal of 613 boxes of cereal - thank you to ALL in our community for making this happen! These will be donated to Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) to help those in need. It was a fun mitzvah project for the whole school!

Thanks to all of our staff for helping to make this event happen today in the safest manner. Coach Kolbow, an extra thanks to you for keeping it organized and engaging, and to Morah Liat and Morah Eta for making it meaningful and fun for all.
Shabbat Shalom!

Earlier this week, some of our youngest students were able to collaborate with our oldest students! Kindergarten wrote letters to 8th grade students about the cereal box domino project. The eighth graders wrote them back and then joined them as reading buddies to share their letters and help them read! #workingtogether #teachingouryouth #readingtime

We are so proud of Abigail, an alum of the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School.

Congratulations to Abigail Fixel for being awarded the 2021 Len & Judy Elikan Youth Leader Camp Scholarship Award. Len and Judy Elikan created this scholarship based on their dream of helping young people experience Jewish summer camps.

Abigail is a graduate of the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School, attends Mandarin High School, and is the founder of her school’s Jewish Student Union and Camp Fixel, as well as president of her BBYO Jacksonville Chapter. Abigail will be attending the International Leadership Training Conference where BBYO's top teen leaders come together from around the world.
“I use Camp Fixel and the Jewish Student Union program I founded to advocate for equality. I will always do whatever I can to advocate for positive change. Every person deserves to get treated as equal.”

The fifth grade has been learning about electricity! In a STEAM project, the students created salt circuits. The process involved designing their circuit, outlining it in glitter glue, covering it with salt and finally, attaching a battery pack and an LED light.

How does it work⁉️

The current travels through the salt molecules and the glue helps move the current to the LED. Not only were the students able to learn about electricity and how to make a circuit, they also had to collaborate, brainstorm and problem-solve!

*TEACHER SPOTLIGHT*

Say hello to the Haz and Morah Miriam! Both of these amazing people have been a part of our community for a very long time and we are so thankful for the impact they have made!

Hazzan Holzer (AKA the Shabbat Guy or the Puppet Guy) has been working at the Center for 13 years. He has many roles in our community including teaching Tefillah to our Day School students and Trope to our Middle School students. His favorite thing about his job is watching the kids in the community grow up right before his eyes!
Fun Fact: Hazzan has appeared on MTV twice!

Morah Miriam has been working at the Center for 30 years and is currently teaching Jewish Studies to our preschool students! She loves seeing the children’s love of learning and seeing their smiling faces!
Fun Fact: Morah Miriam is teaching children now whose parents were her students!

Meet Ms. Rebecca! She is currently one of our Kofim 1 teachers and she also helps run the schools social media pages! Ms. Rebecca has been working at the DuBow Preschool for 5 years. Her favorite thing about working with children is their innocence and being able to watch them grow throughout the year. A fun fact about Ms. Rebecca is that she went to the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School from kindergarten all the way up to 8th grade!

Meet Ms. Claire and Ms. Lizzie, our Day School Floaters! Ms. Claire is currently a floater for kindergarten and second grade, however she previously worked in the DuBow Preschool for 2 years. Her favorite thing about teaching is not only that everyday brings new experiences, but that she gets to see the kids grow and learn new things! A fun fact about Ms. Claire is that over spring break she adopted a 2 month old cat named Rey! Ms. Lizzie helps in kindergarten where she teaches science, and is also a teacher’s aide in first grade. This is her first year working for the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School, but she worked at Camp Ki Tov for the last two summers! Ms. Lizzie loves interacting with the kids and helping them have “ah ha” moments. A fun fact about Ms. Lizzie is that she is currently an occupational therapy student at the University of St. Augustine!

The Better Together in a Box program just keeps getting better!

Middle School students at the Martin J. Gottlieb Day school, along with their buddies at River Garden & The Coves, had a lovely (and delicious) Chocolate Seder celebration. Students and their special friends really enjoyed following the Chocolate Haggadah as they drank 4 cups of chocolate milk instead of wine, ate a chocolate egg, a Hershey’s Kiss wrapped in green (for the green vegetable!) and so much more. It was a great opportunity to review the parts of the seder while enjoying each other's company via Zoom.

Senior buddies also received a special Passover gift box from their student buddy packed with a box of matzah, macaroons, grape juice, a Passover mask, a chocolate seder plate, and a personalized “Happy Passover” card!

We are having so much fun preparing for Passover together!

Hi friends! Where can I get uniform skorts for my super lean 5 year old? The target Cat and Jack company size 4-5 is too big. Tia!
Thank you Raquel Scharf-Anderson for this meaningful Chanukkah message - our children are in great hands. Dear Families: Before Thanksgiving, I had the privilege of driving four 6th graders on their weekly Mitzvah Trip, delivering turkeys and groceries to the homes of families from Beauclerc Elementary. This program of Torah-guided experiences is an important piece of our Middle School curriculum and one that builds character and empathy. In the car the children expressed to me that when we approach the home, we do not tell jokes, lest the person that answers the door think we are laughing at them. The students in our Middle School are taught not just to fulfill a mitzvah, but to do so with kavod (respect) and kindness. At one delivery, we found a young family in an apartment with sparse furnishings. After visiting them and placing their groceries inside, we headed back to the car. The students commented on how that was such a lovely home. I inquired what made it nice and one shared it was the people inside. Another continued, "It isn't things that make a home welcoming, it is the people." "Not by might, not by power, but by spirit alone shall we all live in peace." (Zechariah 4:6) The Maccabees dealt constantly with a Jewish question - how much influence should the Jewish community accept from the outside world? They wondered whether to practice, think, or even dress like Hellenists - the dominant Greek culture of their time. While there are positives to other faiths and cultures, how do we maintain our own beliefs? This question continues to resonate with all of us in our modern world. Years ago, Eric and I made the choice to send our children to a Jewish preschool and independent Jewish day school in Phoenix. We hoped (now know) that by partnering with the school, their Jewish identity would be more firmly set when they were teens. We have seen that the lessons that they learned from their Pre-K to 8th grade years have supported them and their friends as they head off into a world with challenges and trials. How wonderful that their faith has been their guide. In this dark winter season, may the lights of the candles remind us that it is the lessons we teach our children AND the lessons they teach us that are the light of our world. We are grateful that you have chosen a strong secular and Jewish education for your children at DuBow Preschool and Martin J. Gottlieb Day School, helping to ensure the strength of our people in the days and years to come. How fitting that a candle, like the light of a child, can remind us that the spirit of a people can live on and thrive! Chag Hanukkah Sameach, Raquel
