Ophelia's Restaurant

Independence Restaurant news: Say Hello to Chef Cameron Kelly!
We're very excited to have Chef Cameron Kelly taking charge in our kitchens, with his extensive knowledge of the restaurant business; something he has been part of for decades. A graduate of the Louisiana Culinary Institute and a New Orleans native, Chef Cameron brings a unique style and flavor to the city of Independence that we can't wait to try! He's previously worked as the Executive Chef at Driftwood Cask and Barrel in downtown Baton Rouge, The Landing Bistro in Warsaw, Missouri, and even providing from-scratch meals for the entirety of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Now he will move on to Ophelia's, cultivating the ideal that community comes first, and working closely with local farmers to bring a true farm-to-table experience, creating locally sustainable dishes that showcase his love of flavor combinations and fusion cuisine that is not only palatable for all, but helps keep local food on local tables. Chef Cameron is excited about this new chapter in life and is eager to bring his creativity to the people of Independence and beyond.

With these changes, Ophelia's will be closed the week of May 11th with a reopening date of May 18th. This will give Chef Cameron time to learn our current menu while teaching the kitchen about a few of his own recipes he'd like to introduce to everyone. Likewise, we will be doing rigorous staff training as we add new employees to various positions in order to better serve you as we return to being fully open with the dine in experiences that you love. Training will include everything from servers, wine training, cocktail training, food specials, and our plans to implement other fun features such as a variety of teas (including one made specifically for Ophelia's!), tableside French press, and more! While we regret closing our doors to you again, we do it knowing that we will have so much more to offer you when we open up once more, and we hope that you'll be as excited as we are when it comes to what the future holds!

City of Independence announces lifting of mask mandate, social distancing capacity restrictions

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – City of Independence Mayor Eileen Weir, in consultation with Acting Health Director Christina Heinen, today announced that effective immediately masks are not required indoors or outdoors and all social distancing capacity restrictions have been lifted. However, those who have not been vaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear a mask in all public settings.

“Since declaring a State of Emergency on March 12, 2020, our city has followed the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control, which now allows fully vaccinated people to cease wearing a mask indoors and outdoors in the City of Independence,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “Our community has made tremendous sacrifices and shown incredible strength and compassion over the past 14 months, and today marks a significant milestone in our public health efforts to battle the global pandemic.”

It is important to note:
Masks are required on public transportation per federal guidelines.
Avoiding large crowds indoors and outdoors and frequent hand-washing are encouraged.
Private and public businesses, places of worship, and schools may require masks, social distancing, and other restrictions at their discretion.
Amended requirements for City of Independence facilities and hours of operation will be forthcoming.

Vaccines are now readily available for free to anyone 12 or older. Find a list of regional vaccination providers as well as times for Independence clinics at indep.us/vaccines.

The Independence Health Department was recognized as a Local Public Health Authority (LPHA) by the State of Missouri in November, 2020. The Independence Health Department has conducted more than 8,000 COVID-19 tests and distributed more than 16,000 doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

“Our relentless persistence in pursuing LPHA status for the Independence Health Department has allowed Independence to play a critical role in protecting the public’s health across our region and the State of Missouri thanks to the valiant efforts of our city leadership, professional staff, and thousands of Medical Reserve Corps volunteers,” Mayor Weir said.

Further information will be provided on City facility hours and operations at a later time. The City of Independence remains under a State of Emergency at this time.

This week-May 2rd through May 9th, we celebrate National Small Business Week, which recognizes the important contributions of small business owners and entrepreneurs in our city. According to the Small Business Administration, more than 50% of Americans either work for or own a small business. Small businesses and start-ups create nearly two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

Independence is home to many outstanding small businesses. We are sure you can list many favorites. Please take some time next week and make a special effort to thank small businesses and patronize them if you can. Whether it be restaurant or bar, clothing store or antique shop, pet care center, winery or other service provider stop by and see them this week or if they have an online presence give them some business remotely.

Small business owners, we want to say thank you for your investment in our city and your commitment to your business here. You have shown amazing resilience through possibly the toughest circumstances in all of our lives over the past 14 months. Your commitment to excellent customer service makes all the difference. Your friendly employees have made our days better as we return to more normal daily activities. Relationships are what small businesses are all about.

So, for the small businesses that have been in Independence for a year or years, we again would like to thank you for your continued contribution to the Independence Community. Next week, on May 13th we will hold our annual business awards at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center. We hope you can join us to honor our small and large businesses of the year.

Comcast is expanding their Internet Essentials program to include low-income veteran’s throughout the country to help them have access to low-cost, high-speed Internet; an affordable computer; and free digital skills training. This includes Independence. For details on how to apply, please visit: www.internetessentials.com/apply. Expanding IE to Low-Income Veterans: • At Comcast, a commitment to veterans and support for the military community is one of our core values. In 2017, we surpassed our goal of hiring 10,000 Veterans, National Guard, and Reserve members, as well as military spouses across our company, and we are always looking for ways to show our support beyond our walls. • We are proud to expand eligibility for low-income veterans to Internet Essentials across our footprint. • The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that fewer than 70 percent of low-income veterans have Internet access and about 60 percent have a computer. • This expansion will allow those who have served our country to connect with the resources they need to manage issues they may face, as well as find new opportunities that can change their lives. • This is the second largest expansion in the history of the program with one million low-income veterans now being eligible for low-cost, high-speed Internet; an affordable computer; and free digital skills training. • Since 2010, we have hired more than 15,000 Veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses. • We want to do even more to help low-income veterans and their families better navigate the complexities of daily life as civilians. Through our Internet Essentials program, we have come to learn how powerful connection can be for families in need.

Please help me out here... The street sales tax that is coming up for renewal on the ballot on August 8th, is that the tax that we voted on some time ago that was the money that the city was required to use exclusively for construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, bridges, culverts and traffic signals ? I noticed that the Question #1 on the up coming ballot states "for transportation purposes, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, bridges, culverts and traffic signals, Is that a good change??? Also, this tax shall be in effect thereafter until repealed. Is that a good change???
