We Are ALPA

Happy birthday, ALPA! Since its inception in 1931, ALPA has sought to enhance the safety of our skies and thanks to our #TrainedforLife pilots, commercial air travel remains the safest mode of transportation in the world. Unfortunately, our industry is facing unprecedented challenges and thousands of aviation jobs are at risk if Congress doesn’t extend the CARES Act’s Payroll Support Program. We need your help to tell Congress to pass a clean extension to the CARES Act’s Payroll Support Program to protect airline pilots and their families: https://alpa.quorum.us/campaign/27454/?embedded=true

Congress: Fund an extension to the Payroll Support Program

We Are ALPA has an active Call to Action that we ask you to act on NOW. Congress will be considering extending the payroll and job protections of the CARES Act through March 31, 2021. The successful passage of a clean extension in the Payroll Support Program will preserve jobs at Air Wisconsin and throughout our industry. Please take a minute or two of your time to ask your Congressional representatives to support this extension, which will safeguard our jobs and support our nation's economic recovery.

Please share this with friends, family and coworkers - this Call to Action is NOT limited to ALPA pilots! The more responses Congress receives in support of this act, the more likely they will take positive action in passing it.

Congress: Fund an extension to the Payroll Support Program

Tell Congress to fund a Payroll Support Program extension! As #COVID19 still rages and air travel remains historically low, time is running out for #aviation workers. Should October 1 arrive without extending the Payroll Support Program grant job program, mass layoffs are inevitable, as airline executives have acknowledged. Hundreds of thousands of workers will lose their jobs and health insurance — not only in aviation, but across our entire economy. We are asking for Congress to support a clean extension of the Payroll Support Program through March 31, 2021, to bolster not only the aviation industry and its workers but also to support our nation’s economic recovery. News Room - ALPA

Yesterday, We Are ALPA President Captain Joe DePete issued a statement about potential airline furloughs. Here's an excerpt: “When this global health crisis first began to take hold in the United States, ALPA worked with others in labor to secure a major financial lifeline for our industry, but clearly more needs to be done.

“ALPA continues to work with airline managements on creative ways to mitigate the effects that the recent economic downturn has on pilots. Through our extensive resources, ALPA is assisting pilots affected by these potential furloughs—and working to ensure that more passengers feel comfortable taking to the skies again.”

Public Inspection: Relief for Certain Persons and Operations during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Outbreak

On June 25, the Federal Aviation Administration released an update to the #COVID19 Special Federal Aviation Regulation that was originally released at the end of April. This update provides for the following extensions for medical certificates that expire in April through September 2020:

Pilots who hold a medical certificate that would have expired in March 2020 must obtain a new medical certificate before July 1, 2020.

Pilots who hold a medical certificate that would have expired in April through September 2020 will have a three-calendar-month extension.

For example, a medical certificate that was to expire in May 2020 has been extended by three calendar months and is now valid until August 31, 2020. Likewise, a medical certificate that expires in September 2020 is now valid until December 31, 2020.

The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) has temporarily approved nonuniformed crewmembers to travel with commercially available liquid disinfectant products in quantities adequate for personal use for the duration of their assigned trip in order to protect their health and safety. This policy is effective as of April 30, 2020, through July 31, 2020, or until TSA, at its discretion, returns to the existing policy for nonuniformed crewmembers.

The following measures apply:

Nonuniformed crewmembers are required to present their CREW ID.

Any commercially produced disinfectant product may be subject to additional screening by TSA and may be prohibited from transport at the discretion of the Federal Security Director or his/her designee.

This exemption is limited to commercially produced disinfectant products only and does not apply to other liquids, prohibited hazardous materials (unless otherwise authorized by a Special Permit from the Department of Transportation), or items on the TSA prohibited items list.

Today we remember our members who paid the ultimate sacrifice to provide an essential service to our country. Even now, their fellow pilots and other frontline aviation workers continue to put themselves in harm’s way to transport essential healthcare professionals and critical medical equipment to the hardest hit areas across our country. Their sacrifices must not be in vain. We must continue to call on the FAA and airlines to ensure the health and safety of flight crews. #WorkersMemorialDay

Act Now to Ensure Pilots Aren’t Left Out of Airline Economic Relief

Tell the U.S. House of Representatives to swiftly pass H.R. 748, which includes an airline economic relief package!

Included in the legislation are grants for worker payrolls to immediately stabilize the industry, protective language to ensure that negotiated collective bargaining agreements are not abrogated, furlough limits, and restrictions on executive compensation, as well as a prohibition on stock buybacks for companies that receive federal aid.

The Senate has passed the legislation — and now it is imperative for the House to do the same. Frontline employees and their families need assistance now. Please take action!
