September Message
Su***de Awareness Month

Dear California Veterans,

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month with September 5th-11th recognized as National Su***de Prevention Week and September 10th recognized as World Su***de Prevention Day.

Su***de affects all of us, not just those who die by su***de. Families, friends, and communities as a whole are devastated by the premature loss of loved ones. Veterans continue to be over represented in this tragic reality. It is our personal and professional responsibility in the Veterans Services Division (VSD) at the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) to do our part to bring awareness to the matter of veteran su***de and provide prevention and early intervention resources to the veteran community.

In September, the California Transition Assistance Program (CalTAP) will collaborate with the Los Angeles Su***de Prevention Network and U.S.VETS to host the 11th Annual Los Angeles County Su***de Prevention Conference- Su***de Prevention for the Veteran Community. CalTAP will also host two webinars this month which focus on veteran mental health. The first focuses on student veterans as they return to college and face the many stressors that accompany their academic pursuits. The webinar will highlight techniques and resources to assist student veterans in managing stress and accessing assistance when needed. The second webinar addresses su***de prevention through early intervention. The webinar teaches participants how to identify behaviors of suicidal ideation and how to begin the conversation with those at risk. CalTAP also provides 24/7 access to a veteran specific su***de prevention course through our CalTAP Online Curriculum.

If you are a veteran in crisis, or are concerned about a veteran family member, please connect with the Veterans Crisis Line to reach caring, qualified first-responders with the USDVA.

Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1

Although we have declared September Su***de Awareness month, we understand that curbing this pressing public health issue requires a year round, culturally competent effort with a coordinated federal, state, and community based approach. CalVet is committed to continue to work closely with our partners to address this tragedy.

Stay Well,

Keith Boylan
Deputy Secretary, Veterans Services CalVet Veterans Services

AGAINST ALL ODDS !!!! 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
On August 9, 1942, Navy Signalman 3rd Class Elgin Staples was aboard USS Astoria (off the coast of Guadalcanal) when the ship was attacked by Japanese cruisers. The attack provoked devastating explosions. Wounded, and surrounded by water coming from every direction, Elgin quickly grabbed his inflatable rubber lifebelt and strapped it on. More than 200 crewmen died in the attack and sinking of USS Astoria, but thanks to his lifebelt, Elgin survived. He was later rescued by the destroyer USS Bagley. Shortly after, Elgin closely examined the lifebelt that had saved him, and was surprised to see that it had been manufactured in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He also noticed an inspector number on the label. When Elgin returned to Akron, he told his mom about that terrible night, and she informed him that while he was overseas, she had taken a wartime job at the Firestone plant. Stunned, Elgin quickly took out the lifebelt from his duffel bag and said: "Take a look at that mom, It was made right here in Akron, at your plant". After reading the label, she looked at Elgin with tears in her eyes, and said: "Son, I'm an inspector at Firestone. This is my inspector number". Without saying another word, mother and son fell into each other's arms.

Veterans from all eras are reacting to the events in Afghanistan, such as the U.S withdrawal and the takeover by the Taliban, and may question the meaning of their service or whether it was worth their sacrifice. Today, twelve Service Members were just killed at the Kabul airport. This is an important mental health issue for veterans as well as being on the minds of many citizens. Please review and share the attached resources of veterans.
