We are excited to support a pilgrimage family members are making this week to our nation's capital of Washington, D.C., to advocate for their loved ones with serious mental illness. Wednesday, they will encourage lawmakers to pass reforms that Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) is expected to introduce to fix our broken mental health care system. Thank you to mothers, including Teresa Pasquini, GG Burns, Rosie De Joy, Laura Pogliano and others, who will be making the journey.

And thank you to Treatment Advocacy Center and its Doris Fuller, John Snook, Dr. Fuller Torrey and others for hosting this event. We also send a warm welcome to John as TAC's new executive director as Doris moves to a new position that we hope will bring her much healing.

It will take a compassionate movement to bring about change, and we are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with those fighting for some of our country's most vulnerable. #Tb4T

Dearest Members of Treatment Before Tragedy,

From our families to yours, we wish you a warm, heart-filled Mother's Day, celebrating the maternal spirit in each one of you. We know many of our lives are bittersweet in the joys and challenges that we face. The joy of new life comes into this world but our lives aren't always the stuff of Hallmark cards.

Still, we all persevere.

We look forward to the days ahead, working together and realizing the change we want to see in the world. Like having a newborn child, we have been very excited about the birth of Treatment Before Tragedy, and look forward to raising this baby, just as mothers worldwide aspire to do with their children, into a mature, healthy being, slowly but surely, with the support, dedication and good intentions of all. All of us face challenges and obstacles we could never have anticipated, but let us continue to support each other in kindness and compassion, so that we can realize our hopes and dreams.

Happy Mother's Day to one and all.

Warmly, Treatment Before Tragedy

Dear Friends,

Today, a mother grieves her child gone. A community grieves the tragedy of a child gone. It is a deep pain that should never have become so familiar. We grieve the passing of a radiant being, Natalie, from the loving embrace of her mother, Doris Fuller, and we mourn with our friends at Treatment Advocacy Center. We are with you, Doris, as you have always stood with our mothers and our families.

In love, grief and solidarity, the families of Treatment Before Tragedy

Rep. Murphy Accepts Torrey Advocacy Commendation and Outline Vision for Mental Health Reform

Dear Friends, Please watch Rep. Tim Murphy outline his vision for mental health reform at an awards lunch held on 1/27/2015 sponsored by Treatment Advocacy Center. Washington, D.C., locals, Asra Nomani and Asra's son, Shibli, 12, represented Treatment Before Tragedy at a powerful event on Capitol Hill this week, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, sponsored by the good folks at Treatment Advocacy Center. Thank you to them for giving us, literally, a seat at the table.

In Room B-340, off the majestic marble halls of the Rayburn House Building, new snow on the ground outside, Rep. Tim Murphy unveiled his plans to introduce HR 3717 2.0 in a few weeks. Rep. Murphy lauded Liza in the same sentence as Dr. Thomas Insell, chief of the National Institutes of Mental Health, and a very gracious man.

Asra took photos and Shibli took videos we will post from our LiveStream account. We want you to know the players in Washington on issues of brain health policy. We'll keep tagging these photos so you can know aides, advocates and experts. Please keep checking back.

We want you to consider Washington, D.C., your second hometown because this is where we are going to fix our country's broken mental healthcare system. Though we smile and laugh as we try to walk this path with a positive spirit, please know all of you that we know the sadness, darkness and despair with which so many our your lives are filled. We walk the halls of Congress for you in Washington so that in the sunshine of civic engagement we will bring light to your families.

Your family is our family. #Tb4T

Donna Pitcher says medical officials rejected the idea of having 18-year-old Dylan Collins committed, just weeks before the fatal fire he is accused of setting.

Please get to know the innovative response model called Police-Embedded Co-responders, which is quickly spreading. This best practice provides MUCH better outcomes compared to the old paradigm of giving police 40 hrs of training (CIT) and making them defacto mobile mental crisis workers. The Co-Responder Model creates special 2-person teams composed of a specially selected (CIT) officer paired with an embedded mental health clinician. These special teams respond to calls where there is a mental health component. They enable an unfortunate police contact with a person in crisis to evolve, ON-SCENE, into a highly effective on-scene mental healthcare response. It removes regular patrol officers from having to be gatekeepers to proper care. The end result is more de-escallation, preventing unnecessary transfers (i.e. trauma & wasted $), preventing arrests, preventing use of force, and clinician expertise reducing cyclic "frequent presenters" cyclic contact with police by stabilizing them. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1627110547354902&id=911170532282244
