We would love for you to join us for a summer landscape clean up at Colvin Run Mill (10017 Colvin Run Rd, Great Falls VA) on Wednesday, August 18, 9am to noon.

Please bring gloves, water, hat and sunscreen. Please wear close-toes shoes, long pants and long sleeves. We know there may be poison ivy hidden among the plants.

‘Long May It Turn’ in Great Falls

The Connection Newspaper covered the recent "ribbon-cutting" for the new water wheel and flume. We at the Friends of Colvin Run Mill are grateful for the publicity and hope visitors will join us for a live demonstration of water-powered milling. We operate the mill for the public on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month until Fall.

Fairfax County Government Television channel 16 was out at the mill to interview mill wright Ben H. and shoot video of the restored wheel and flume.

All 60 buckets are installed and the flume is just missing the head gate and sluice gate. The project is ahead of schedule so we'll definitely be ready for first grind on May 2.

All the wood on the wheel is oiled white oak. The wedges holding the arms to the axle are white oak, but not oiled. Once the buckets are installed, the wedges will be hammered home, then water soaked to swell them. They will be oiled after swelling.

Our Story

Friends of Colvin Run Mill support the wonderful programs and projects of historic Colvin Run Mill. We work closely with the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Enjoy an outing at the Mill. Admission to the grounds is free. Tickets for touring the interior of the mill are available at the general store. Shop in the old-time country store, have a picnic, or take a walk around the grounds and enjoy the historical views. Colvin Run Mill, constructed ca. 1811, is a working mill that offers demonstrations of grinding grain on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, April through October, noon-3pm. Call ahead to confirm that conditions permit the grinding of grain.

I believe I did a wood carving at the mill years ago with my family. I am now a Den leader for a Bears den and did not know if they still have a program like this. My scouts are working on their whittling chip and it would be a great way to introduce them to this skill.
