Our 2021/2022 club year kicks off with our regular meeting tomorrow at the Great Falls Library. We are celebrating our 80th anniversary this year - the initial meeting to organize our club was held on October 2, 1941. And just to demonstrate what an up to date organization we are, one of our programs this year will be titled “Growing Legal Cannabis in Virginia.” On July 1, 2021, it became legal to grow up to 4 cannabis plants per household in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a result, gardening can take some interesting turns in Virginia now.

PENNY PINES -- Saving Forests $68 at a Time

NGC and the USDA Forest Service have formed a partnership sustaining our national and urban forests through the Penny Pines reforestation/forest education program.

Your club can participate in this meaningful and practical conservation project by contributing $68 to a Penny Pines plantation as part of the costs of replanting replacement trees indigenous to a particular damaged area. Whether by fire or by other natural catastrophe, pine trees and other trees are replaced. You may designate a specific state you wish to benefit from your contribution.

Great Falls Garden Club - 4th of July Parade 2021

Our Club’s “float” in today’s Great Falls Hometown Celebration parade. We were honoring Brood X cicadas that were so entertaining this year in our area. We made hundreds of origami cicadas and attached them to our clothing. Candy Burt’s wonderful husband, Duncan, made the huge 4 foot long cicada that was attached to a bubble machine. It was people powered by members Candy Burt and Jacques Haeringer.

Candy was selected by the Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs for this most prestigious honor. Arlene Stewart, President, National Capital Area Garden Clubs, Inc., is making the presentation.

BTW, this is the second time in 4 years that our garden club has had a national winner of this award. Barbara Cobb was a previous winner.

Congratulations to our own Candy Burt - she has been selected as the 2021 winner of the Award of Honor by the Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs (CAR-SGC). Check it out here - https://www.gardenclub.org/2021-award-honor

This is the second time in four years that the Great Falls Garden Club's Award of Honor nominee has won the top award. The 2018 winner was our own, Barbara Cobb. And, in that same time period, another of our nominee's (Laura Barlow) won at the state level. We are so proud!

Our May meeting was held outdoors at the Fairfax County Park Authority's Riverbend Park in Great Falls VA. Two very knowledgeable park employees presented a history of this treasure in our neighborhood. It was a sunny day and a beautiful location and 25 of our 46 members were together in-person for the first time since February 2020. Unfortunately, we forgot to get a photo before some of the members had set out on a walk along the Potomac to look at the very visible eagle nest across the river on the Maryland shore. Two baby eagles and their parents are frequently visible.
