The Ting service is all about prevention, detecting electrical fire hazards throughout the home - hazards that are normally hidden from sight and that often lead to fires that develop and spread with little warning. This 'thermal' image is from one of Ting's most recent 'saves', revealing very hot temperatures inside the wall and a developing fire risk. I am delighted to announce that our simple DIY solution that can protect all homes through intelligent fire hazard sensing is now available online.

My family has seen first-hand the damage and destruction that electrical fires can cause. I am personally excited to bring the Ting service to the broader consumer market to protect families and homes from the most devastating fires.

Offering Ting directly online was an easy decision. With thousands of homes protected today - and numerous hidden hazards and faults detected and remediated - the response from Ting customers, families and friends has been tremendous.

Ting is different, designed to bring you elevated visibility, awareness, and increased freedom from worry - without complexity or frills. Your Ting experience starts with a 2-minute DIY installation consisting of a plug-in sensor and smartphone app. From there it is like having an electrician in your home 24 x 7 x 365 - continuous electrical fire hazard monitoring and $1,000 in credit towards remediation costs.

For additional peace of mind, there are no batteries to worry about, and your Ting sensor is covered by a free lifetime replacement warranty. Finally, we back this up with a simple no-hassle 30-day money-back guarantee.

Our CEO on the upcoming solar eclipse, its impact on energy, and how technology can help!

"High impact events like the solar eclipse begs a broader set of questions: How should we address the impact of a changing climate creating peak load events that utilities and others throughout the energy ecosystem must manage? What should individuals understand in order to boost their energy efficiency and support grid stability?"

Whisker Labs Receives Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) Award - Earth Networks

We are thrilled to have been awarded a grant from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) Program to study the potential economic benefit of shifting electricity use (loads) through the use of our Connected Savings energy management platform!

In collaboration with the University of Maryland, the study will investigate peak load management as part of utility Demand Response (DR) programs. Stochastic optimization models will be developed and implemented to enable Retail Electric Providers (REPs) and utilities to predict when and how it is best to shift load away from high-priced power procurement periods.

Figure 3
Figure 2
Dear Whisker Labs: I am aware of the device you were working on to bring to production that would enable homeowners to monitor electrical usage through individual circuits within their in home “power grid.” It was to magnetically attach to a family’s electrical panel box and then set up a relay from which the circuits could be monitored. I also understand that when a major appliance, such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, furnace, etc. starts to wear out, the electrical usage pattern begins to display almost an early warning signature prior to its failure. I wish I had your device! We live in a 2-bedroom/2-bath condo (1,100 sqft) as part of a 36-unit complex. Four units comprise a building and there are nine buildings in the complex. Each unit has an electrical panel box inside a garage. See Figure 1. Notice in the figure that there are no main breakers inside the garage panel box. It wasn’t until last week that the location for the main power breakers was discovered for the entire complex. Power comes underground from the street to each 4-unit building to a central point where the meters are mounted outside the building. Figure 2 shows the 4-unit configuration, but please note there are five meters in this building, only because of a back-up generator is located outside this building. Figure 3 then shows the main breakers for each unit located next to the meter assigned to that unit. For the past six months we have been experiencing electrical issues within our unit. When the dishwasher changed cycles, the lights in the kitchen would flicker. The AC turned on, and then immediately shut off. The garage door opener would stop with the doors halfway open and then return to the closed position. During the cold spells, the gas furnace would shut off when the dishwasher or electric cloths dryer would change cycles. GFI outlets would trip and then fail to reset. What we discovered finally was that the outside main breaker, which consisted of two 110-volt trunks, was failing on one side. Once that breaker was replaced all of the electrical issues were resolved. If we had your device, the issue with the main breaker would have been discovered at the onset of the symptoms. The complex is in the process of replacing all 36 main power breakers. But remember, all of these issues we experienced never caused a breaker in the garage panel to trip! Our main breaker was a mass of molten plastic when it was taken out and our electrician was amazed it didn’t cause a fire. What is the long-term effect on an electric motor that does not receive the full 110 or 220-volt service? Could the type of electrical issues we experienced cause a reduction in the lifespan of our HVAC unit? The electric companies claim responsibility for providing 220-volts (+/- 5%) to your house from the street. However, there does not appear to be any way to validate the power coming in is as stated. Most public utilities have legal language that limits their liability, too, so the consumer is completely at their mercy. If you could deliver a device that monitors both energy available from the source as well as power usage, which notes patterns and trends, along with recommendations for improvement, I am convinced there would be a large base of consumers willing to purchase it, especially if everything were displayed in easy to understand graphics on our phones. I would like to thank you for your efforts to date in assisting our society better manage our energy resources. Cordially, Art W. Siemann
