Great conversation about the Lafayette Trail today at George Washington's Mount Vernon with VP Matt Briney, Media & Communication to honor the friendship between George Washington and Lafayette and its legacy.

Their friendship strongly impacted the country and continues to have an impact on the nation to this day.

Lafayette's visit to George Washington's tomb on October 17th, 1824 reminded Americans of the unique friendship that the two men had nurtured.

This weekend, the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio honored the heroes of the Lafayette Escadrille. After WW I broke out, many Americans were disturbed with President Wilson’s neutrality policy. Some American pilots shared that sentiment. They went ahead and volunteered to serve France in the Lafayette Escadrille a year before General Pershing would visit Lafayette’s grave in Paris. The Lafayette Escadrille is a true American story, a testament to the values fueling the Franco-American alliance, and a direct tribute to General Lafayette’s legacy.
Interesting fact: Raoul Lufbery, one of the pilots, passed away on May 19, 1918, and was buried on the 20th, the same day Lafayette had passed away on in 1834.

I wish I had known about this sooner. I own the Jacob Burkhalter house in Warrenton, GA. Local historians say Layafette rested in this house overnight after the mule trail from Augusta beat the old soldier up pretty bad.
I’m sure you know, if not Lafayette stayed a the home of General Samual McCobb in Phippsburg, Maine. The home is now a beautiful inn, 1774 Inn. Check it out
Not sure if you have this stop recorded. If so, just disregard this message. Southwest corner of Washington PA, in Washington County PA there is an INN named the "Globe Inn". It was built in 1798. There was an article printed in the newspaper on the 150 anniversary of Lafayette's visit to this Inn. Here is a link to the article on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2296757657089428&set=gm.2337907529578989&type=3&eid=ARDGL4MrwHZWFXQu4DiUhtv1TANKGzp9dhwOoW-QVm9bC7QWKNdCfjzJpNQukgKzIYaSPcJ4XAnxUw__ If I had your direct email instead of this one I could send you a copy directly... Kind Regards - Linda Harden-Lantz, family historian and researcher.
Fabulous celebration of this marvelous trip
In 1846, Chalkley Harvey, took Lafayette's grandson, Edmund, on a tour of the Brandywine battlefield sites.
Your work continues to be impressive, Mr. Icher! I wish you and your excellent project tremendous success. I enjoyed meeting with you and discussing your project at the French Cemetery, in Yorktown. Perhaps we'll meet again soon! :)
I think I will drive this Trail some Summer. There is a connection to one of my SAR PATRIOT ancestors, Capt. David Story(1745-1834) of Dunbarton, NH. While Gen. Lafayette was on this Trail, Capt. Story’s son and wife were expecting their fourth child. In honor of Gen. Lafayette‘s visit to Caleb Stark(a cousin of the Story family) this fourth child was named Lafayette Story. I can imagine that ancestor was not the only American named in honor of The Marquis.
I am interested in this page and am grateful to you for bringing it to my attention. One of my ancestors became friends with the Marquis while they were on Washington's staff, and their friendship remained, so that the venerable ancestor was one of Lafayette's hosts during his triumphant visit in 1826. Consequently, ever since I learned this, I have been a fan and wanted to learn more about him. Merci!
If anyone is wondering what I do in my spare time, contributing my expertise to this project is it. Go to thelafayettetrail.com website! Very interesting gis application, well done by a french geographer.
