It is with great sadness that we share this note of condolence in memory of Mrs. Pathma Dissanayake, Educate Lanka’s very first Liaison Officer and the loving mother of Educate Lanka’s Founder, Manjula Dissanayake. She was a caring human being who always helped her students reach their dreams through education. It is her compassion and belief in the power of education that inspired Manjula to found Educate Lanka as a platform to invest in the education of students so they are given the opportunities to realize their full potential. Mrs. Pathma Dissanayake has been an inspiration and a pivotal pillar behind the coming-to-be of Educate Lanka as her role as Educate Lanka’s first Liaison Officer has now grown into a network of nearly 40 Educate Lanka volunteer Liaison Officers all across Sri Lanka covering all Provinces. Dear Mrs. Pathma, you were and always will be a true mother to Educate Lanka Scholars and Staff, and you will be dearly remembered and loved by us all.

Educate Lanka’s second annual Global Citizenship Seminar - Sri Lanka took place from 15th to 18th December 2019 in Kandy. The Seminar is an outcome of the Educate Lanka Global Education Program and is organized in collaboration and partnership with St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts, USA whose own Global Citizenship Institute has been the inspiration for this Sri Lankan replication. This year, we extended this unique and valuable opportunity to a diverse group of 17 Educate Lanka Scholars from all across Sri Lanka. Using #DesignThinking and other immersive and activity-based learning methods, the 4-day Seminar provided a dynamic and interactive environment where the participants engaged, developed, and practiced critical #SocialEmotionalLearning skills and competencies necessary to become engaged #GlobalCitizens who are committed to taking action on local issues with global significance. A unique feature this year was the opportunity created for the participants to engage with and present their ideas virtually to members of our partner organizations from around the world.

Seeds of Exchange

Here's the video of our founder sharing Educate Lanka's story with Sarah Davison-Tracy for the Seeds of Exchange Story Series.

Be INSPIRED, INFORMED, and IGNITED (=discovering a bit more of what matters to YOU), during this LIVE experience: The Seeds Storyteller Series with Manjula Dissanayake - and Nilmini Senanayake Hecox who JOINED us as a bonus surprise!. We will be talking about why it matters so very much to him to live life unstoppably committed to giving back and helping people (AND inviting US to do the same!) … the answer lies in his inspiring and powerful story.

The Seeds Storyteller Series is a FREE online experience that is curated and facilitated by me, Sarah Davison-Tracy - author, speaker, and founder of Seeds of Exchange / www.seedsofexchange.org, a community committed to making a difference locally and globally, together, through community, storytelling, and giving.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO ME: Manjula is wise AND compassionate – a most-extraordinary combination! He is living a difference-making life and is passionate about igniting the same in you, in me … in us. It’s not everyday we get to sit with, learn from, and have a conversation with someone who is THIS INSPIRING and walking what he talks each day.

ABOUT OUR STORYTELLER: Manjula Dissanayake was born in Sri Lanka. He’s an investment banker turned social entrepreneur who is committed to democratizing quality learning opportunities for all regardless of their background or circumstances. (Wow, right? I told you he was AWEsome!) His heartbeat in life is to take adversity and turn it into opportunity … whether in his own life, in the ICU after a nearly life-ending car accident or in his work as founding executive director of Educate Lanka in the lives of the next generation of youth.

We’ll talk about what shifted his primary focus in life from earning lots of money and having a great job to dedicating his life to giving back and helping people … and how he’s doing that in some pretty jaw-dropping ways. You’ll learn a lot – I promise! And, you can decide if and how you want to join Manjula and make a life-changing and direct connection (and impact!) with someone who lives thousands of miles away, in the country of Sri Lanka.

We’ll talk about HIS passion that fueled me to create this month’s fundraiser: “Showering Love on Bombing Survivors with Love” in collaboration with the Educate Lanka Foundation, of which Manjula is the founding executive director.

Learn more and donate (We’re nearly halfway to our goal of $4,000!) by October 31, 2019:

On April 21, 2019, Easter Sunday, three churches and three hotels were targeted in a series of bombings in Sri Lanka. Nearly 300 people died, and lives were devastated by the destruction and trauma that followed. Now, nearly six months later, families and children are still struggling to put the pieces of their lives back together, with extremely limited access to necessary resources, support services, and infrastructure. This project is helping to rebuild lives by showering love to many who have lost what is most dear to them: family, friends, homes, and an everyday sense of security and hope. (Learn more at the above links.)

The Seeds Storyteller Series connects you with EVERYday changemakers from around the world: activists, visionaries, artists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, educators … (the list is long and the ways to make change are vast!). Whether you’re interested in being INFORMED about global happenings from amazing changemaking friends of mine, looking for some INSPIRATION in your life today, or eager to be IGNITED more in your unique ways to make a difference, join us for this conversation from anywhere in the world!

We were thrilled to have our newest intern - Anishka - from Boston joining us in Sri Lanka in June 2019 for three weeks. Anishka Yerabothu is a rising senior at St. Mark's School in Boston, USA. St. Mark’s offers a variety of travel options for its students to volunteer abroad and the school’s partnership with Educate Lanka through the Global Citizenship Institute stood out to her.

One of the main tasks Anishka engaged in was designing, organizing, and conducting an Indian music and dance workshop at Mowbray College, Kandy under Educate Lanka’s Skills Development Program. Further, she contributed to the design and organization of Educate Lanka's annual Global Citizenship Seminar which was originally inspired by the Global Citizenship institute at her school in Boston. She also engaged in field visits to rural Sri Lanka and worked with Educate Lanka Scholars during her time here. Inspired by her experience with Educate Lanka, Anishka’s goal when she returns to school is to start a Sri Lankan chapter at St. Mark’s through which students are able to travel to volunteer at Educate Lanka every summer.

In the United States, Anishka learns both Carnatic music and Kathak. She cares very much about presenting her culture and passions to her community. Anishka also received a grant from the state of Massachusetts to further pursue Kathak intensively. As a part of the grant, she will be putting together a final performance on September 21st showcasing everything she has learned in the past year and will be making this a benefit recital for Educate Lanka.
