Perspective | The pandemic’s mental health impact is dangerous for new moms. Especially black moms.

Even in the best of circumstances, new motherhood can be a time of feeling very isolated. During this strange time of the coronavirus where normal support systems may not be available, take time to check in with new mothers to see how they are doing. Or as a new mother yourself, try to find a virtual support group (such as P.A.C.E. or through Facebook) to make connections with those who are feeling similarly alone at this time. Postpartum doulas are available virtually as well to help with these feelings. No mother should be left to fend for themselves at this time.

This is a huge problem. And it’s a problem that could disproportionately affect black women.

Here is a great checklist to assess how breastfeeding is going. And please remember not to wait to consult a professional if you feel like you need more assistance.

Recently I had a virtual consultation with a woman who lives in New York. She is currently in one of the worst “hot spots” of COVID-19 in the USA and has just given birth to a baby a couple of week ago. She has been self-isolating for the past 3 weeks with her husband, two …

Nourishing new mothers: Traditional postpartum diets to soothe the body and soul

Let me begin this by saying that I hope that everyone is staying as safe as possible in these uncertain times. The social distancing and constantly changing news updates can be isolating and scary in the best of times, but even more so when you are getting ready to welcome a new baby.

I wanted to share this article about traditional foods to warm and heal during the postpartum period; each culture has their own ideas, but there are ways to adapt to suit anyone's needs. I hope that everyone is still able to get the support that they need, and while home visits may not be optimal during this period of self-isolation, I am available to clients via Face Time or phone consultation at this time.

From Asia to Latin America, recovery from childbirth often includes a culinary component.
