Veterans Initiative 22 is proud to support the Acupuncture for Our Heroes Act (HR 1182)!

HR 1182 expands access to acupuncture for veterans to treat certain conditions, including pain, stress, substance abuse, and symptoms related to traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, through the Department of Veterans Affairs. As more and more veterans turn towards alternative medicine, we have to ensure that all veterans continue to have equal access to quality healthcare, regardless of their form of treatment.

The Acupuncture for Our Heroes Act (HR 1182, 116th Congress) would amend title 38 of the United States Code, which describes veterans’ benefits, to facilitate acupuncture services.

Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine in which very thin needles are inserted into different parts of the body. The practice has been used to treat pain, respiratory disorders, nausea, and to promote overall wellness. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic (e.g., low-back pain, neck pain, or migraines), but clinical practice guidelines for acupuncture are variable and the practice’s efficacy for other uses is still uncertain.

HR 1182 would provide veterans access to acupuncture to treat a variety of ailments, including but not limited to chronic and acute pain, cancer pain, mental health conditions, stress management, substance abuse, and symptoms relating to traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, the bill would create an ‘Advisory Committee on Acupuncturist Services’ to assist and advise in the implementation of the program, including by meeting at least three times each year following the year of enactment. This committee would submit a report to the Department of Defense explaining their criteria and rationale in creating the designated acupuncture regimen.

Federal Court Approves Nationwide Class Action For Veterans with PTSD

“Since September 11, 2001, more than two million Americans have served in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Nearly a third of these servicemembers suffer from PTSD and related mental health conditions, but the military continues to issue less-than-Honorable (“bad paper”) discharges at historically high rates, often for minor infractions that are attributable to undiagnosed mental health issues stemming from their military service.”

From the Cannabis Question and Answer event in Hagerstown yesterday: I spoke to the Commission for about 15 minutes yesterday and explained that I was 100% cannabis newbie in December but knew I had to do something because of the BIG PHARMA cocktails that were killing me and my family relationships. I had been on opiates, amphetamine, Xanax, antidepressants and a host of other drugs for 20+years. I stopped most after two weeks of cannabis and willpower. The others I weened off. That comes to 5475 pills and 123 patches over a years time. I thank God for the Sacred Plant that saved my life. When I visited the dispensary for the first purchase I didn't know what to do with the cannabis when I got home. I had to contact a friend of my son. I have been invited to share my story by the commission. Sorry if you are seeing this twice, Toni Matese Toothaker
