Welcome, Bob Goff to the RTMC team! He will be operating as our Construction Manager. We are fortunate to have Bob’s knowledge and skills to serve our vulnerable homeowners. Bob recently retired from Montgomery County after a 30-year career in the Code Enforcement area where he served as an Inspector and later as a Supervisor. RTMC has worked with Bob over the years on code violation mitigation for our clients. Bob is also a skilled general contractor and previously provided home repairs for our clients through his business, Goff Properties LLC. This is what a satisfied homeowner had to say about the work Bob did for them through RTMC:

“Bob did an awesome job repairing my home and making it safe for me. He was always on time, very polite, and very skilled. Thank you!”

Bob deeply understands the needs of our homeowners. His kindness and compassion for them, as well as his repair skills and passion for our mission, will help take RTMC to new heights.

Here’s a homeowner story to kick off the week! We would like to give a shout-out to the team at Get-A-Grip Construction Services for providing critical home repairs and accessibility modifications to our neighbors in need, Mr. and Mrs. W.

Mr. W. is prone to falling and has struggled to safely enter and exit the home he has shared with his wife of 50 years. With the help from the Get-A-Grip team, we were able to modify the family’s tub to make it safer and easier to access, affix seven grab bars and install a safety ramp from the front door. The Get-A-Grip Construction Services team went above and beyond to obtain the specific equipment needed to keep these neighbors safely in their house hopefully for many more years to come.

It's feature Friday!👏 We would like to extend a huge thank you to Richard Biava and Keith Atkinson of GAC Services and their exemplary team for their dedication to providing superior HVAC and electrical services to so many of our neighbors in need.

Recently, the GAC Services team sprang into action after RTMC AmeriCorps Client Outreach Coordinator Joni Keaton learned of an emergency repair needed for a vulnerable homeowner. Two concerned and caring sisters called us to let us know their brother, Mr. T., was scheduled to return home from a rehab hospital but his home had no working heat during a bitter cold spell. In less than 48 hours, with support from RTMC AmeriCorps Program Coordinator Kristen Miller (pictured below), the GAC team was able to assess the situation and install a brand new heating system just in time for Mr. T’s arrival home. Mr. T. is now safe and comfortable at home and the whole family is grateful for our teamwork and support.

This March we recognize Roger Rothman as our spotlight rebuilder! Roger Rothman (pictured on the far right) is a treasure in our organization and a longtime friend of RTMC. Over the years, Roger has served in a variety of volunteer capacities, including House Captain, RTMC Board Member and Board President. He leads volunteers from his synagogue, Temple Beth Ami, every year during National Rebuilding Day and, together, they have helped countless neighbors in need over the years. Roger truly goes the extra mile and even sends out an annual year end appeal to his friends and family to encourage them to donate to RTMC. Thanks to Roger’s efforts, thousands of funds have been raised to support our mission.

So what keeps Roger coming back year after year to help?

According to Roger, “Coming back every year is two fold. It is very rewarding to see these projects work out and be successful but we also see a huge impact on the homeowners and volunteers involved. Everyone is incredibly grateful. That’s what brings my volunteers back too.”

Our Construction Supervisor Raul (top photo) oversaw an important bathroom renovation for our neighbor, Mr B, a man with only one leg. He had been hopping over the lip of a bathtub for years in order to shower. We built him an accessible walk-in shower, and extended the handheld showerhead. We are so thrilled to have been able to make Mr. B’s home more accessible for him.

Shoutout to Joe Lodmell, a longtime friend of RTMC, and his team at JML Remodeling for their role in these critical repairs!

🌟⭐️We began our week with a star ceremony!⭐️🌟 What does this mean? In our office we have a wall filled with hearts that represent the homes approved for our critical repair services. Whenever we close out on a repair, we add a star sticker to the wall corresponding with the homeowner helped. This week we had THREE stars to add. The team has been working swiftly to serve our neighbors amid a frigid winter and a global pandemic. During these uncertain times, we are even more thrilled to complete these critical repairs! After Joni reads out the name of the homeowner, our program director, Dennis, pins up the star and our executive director, Maury, rings the bell to signal the project’s completion. We can’t wait to share more star ceremonies with you this year!✨

Happy Friday! Here's an update on a recent repair for a homeowner without heat from our team member, Joni:

“Ms. T contacted us in the beginning of the new year to apply for critical home repairs, calling from under a pile of blankets. The heating unit in her home had stopped working, and she and her son were living in freezing conditions within their own walls. We got to work right away to install a brand-new HVAC system for them, with GAC Services on the job. Thanks to their swift work, exactly one week after submitting an application with us Ms. T called to say that her home is now “warm and cozy,” and that “after weeks of not sleeping [because of the cold], I slept like a baby last night!”

We are honored to serve neighbors like Ms. T and to help ensure their homes are safe and comfortable to live in! We also want to give a shoutout to our partner GAC Services, who were swift in helping us to get this project done. #IAmARebuilder #SafeAtHome

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County is grateful to the long-time support of Robert King, former RTMC Board President and longtime volunteer, donor and golf committee chair. Bob has been instrumental to RTMC’s success in so many ways. We asked Bob why our mission is important to him. Here’s what he had to say:

“Safe and healthy housing is at the center of so much of what impacts peoples' everyday lives. It is not only an important health factor (not having mold in a house, for example), but can be essential to mental wellbeing, as unhealthy living space can cause undue stress and family strife. In addition, much of our work has been to make homes more accessible to the owners' and their families and it is such a joy to be able to see someone be able to leave their house easily for the first time in a long time.

During the time of covid, when state and local officials have been telling us to stay home where it is safer, the response must be ‘you can't be safer at home if you aren't safe at home to begin with.’ Our work is needed more than ever.”

Thank you, Bob, for all you do for RTMC! #WeAreRebuilders

We are so excited to introduce our new AmeriCorps Member, Kristen Miller, to our team! Kristen is a recent graduate of University of Arizona, with a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern and North African Studies. She has experience volunteering with the Appalachia Service Project (home repairs in Central Appalachia) as well as a prior AmeriCorps term with the International Rescue Committee in Tucson, AZ. Kristen will be helping coordinate our homeowners and contractors during the assessment and repairs phase of our program. She will also be working on getting our volunteer handyman services back off the ground and help manage volunteer projects when they start back up. Kristen is the second AmeriCorp member on our team, alongside Joni Keaton. We can’t wait to see what this team will accomplish in the new year! #WeAreRebuilders

At our office, we have a wall filled with stars that represents all the homes that have been approved for our services. Whenever we repair a home, our AmeriCorps Client Outreach Coordinator, Joni, puts a sticker on the homeowner’s star to mark that the house is complete!

Here’s Joni putting a couple of stickers up yesterday during our staff meeting. We’re getting a lot of work done, and we can’t wait until every star has a sticker! ⭐ 🔨🔧

Rebuilding Together

🏠❤️

Many of us are continuing to stay at home for the holidays this year. Here’s a look at what home has meant to us in 2020:

🏠 A roof over our heads, outside of the rain and snow
🏠 A place of refuge and warmth
🏠 The ability to make food with working appliances
🏠 A chance to gather with family around the table (in person or virtually)
🏠 Home is a place where memories are made and cherished
🏠 A responsibility and something to call our own
🏠 Somewhere we leave and always come back again

For our neighbors, having a safe and healthy home means improved phyical and mental health, increased safety and independence, community connection and economic sustainability.

What does home mean to you this year? #OurHomesOurHealth
