Going Virtual: How to Engage, Develop and Inspire Leaders by Taking Leadership Development Online - Leadership Research Institute

Today I’m reaching out to share LRI’s newest blog post, Going Virtual: How to Engage, Develop and Inspire Leaders by Taking Leadership Development Online. We know that moving business online in the past few months has been a challenge, and we’re hoping some of the ideas in the blog help you do so successfully. We are hearing from our clients that engaging leaders, staying connected during the various shutdowns, and finding new ways to move business forward are all high priorities. We may be doing things differently these days, but don’t have to figure it all out ourselves! Let us know if we can support you. Thanks to the LRI Colleagues who contributed to this much needed content with me @JanDayGravel @RalucaGraebner @KateGigax @PatriceTratch @ JoelleJay.

The best organizations know that their leaders- their people – are the key to their business success. But how can they develop leaders effectively now that the live events, travel, and in-person interaction that make leadership development so engaging are suddenly off-limits? The challenges are re...

Some important distinctions and realities to digest in this. Thank you Darcie.

WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT ...

I’ve heard that “we are all in the same boat,” but it's not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis.

For some that live alone they're facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.

With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.

Some families of 4 just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of 4 saw $0.

Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.

Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.

Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday.

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don't believe this is a big deal.

Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.

We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey.

4 Things Leaders Should Do When Crisis Disrupts People

I really appreciate the reflective questions in this article. What gives you distinction as a leader?

This crisis is a significant moment for all leaders. A moment that will either define you – or a moment that you will seize to serve others, because of what you decided to do – in this moment.

So much anxiety and life changing things happening. I pray for all who are financially impacted, so many small businesses, food and entertainment professionals out of work.

1. I am grateful for our grocery, and medical workers.
2. I need to call my dad. I don’t think I’ll be seeing him for a while. I hope he stays safe.
3. I am letting go of trying to hard to be the caretaker. I need to manage my energy.
4. If it stops raining, I will walk the dog while Kate does her PE time.
5. Look into Cheryl Dodge Nichols classes she is offering.
6. I launch a virtual Group Coaching program today. I want this opportunity to feel like a blessing to the participants.

Failure Found to Be an “Essential Prerequisite” for Success

Many of my leaders have developed a habit of rescuing their team members so they don’t fail, and ultimately worry about looking good.
They are robbing their people from a valuable education.

Stop Saying Your Company Is Like A Family

I hear clients (some even C levels in start ups and smaller firms) say this, intentionally creating a culture like family. And leaders saying they treat their team like family (parental.) Most do not want parental coaching at work.
It leads to far more complexity like pleasing, withholding so not to disappoint, never mind the fact that family systems are not what they used to be as the article expresses. Good read, thanks @infiniteedge for the share!

Today, trying to run your organization as a family will hold you back, and may even backfire.
