A special shout-out to our new ESSD teachers on this first day of school. On Aug. 17, during the new teacher breakfast, the Educational Foundation surprised them with an ESEF tumbler and $100 bill as our way of saying "welcome to the district." We wish them a most successful school year!

Pictured are new teachers from Lewis Elementary and the Middle School. (These photos were taken on Aug. 17, prior to the mask mandate.)

Cornerstone Elementary chosen as the new school name

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO (October 20th, 2020) – At a special meeting for the Board of Education, only one item was discussed on the agenda. That item was the new name for the elementary building being built on the corner of Wornall and Lodwick. A committee of representatives met on two different occasions to provide input to the board on possible names. After discussion, the Board of Education voted 7-0 to adopt the name, “Cornerstone Elementary” to be the name of the building that will replace the current Westview Elementary. Tray Harkins, President of the school board stated, “Our elementary buildings are the cornerstone of our educational system. This new name conveys that message to our community.”

The construction of Cornerstone Elementary was made possible by a vote of the community through a no tax rate increase bond, called Proposition T, which passed in June of 2020. The elementary building is scheduled to open for students sometime in the fall of 2021. The existing Westview Elementary will receive major remodeling to convert the building into the newly named “Westview Early Childhood Center”. The completion of these projects will result in numerous facility upgrades and added services for early childhood education while also ensuring that no school buildings are left empty or vacant.

Important School Update: In order to meet new guidelines set by the local health department, ESSD School Board voted to adjust the school re-entry plan. The first day of school will move back to Tuesday, September 8th.

All secondary students will now return on an A/B schedule where only half of the students are in person on a given day. Elementary students will attend in person everyday.

Great work, Tigers!

The Hall of Fame committee wanted to extend a big thanks to this crew of Volleyball, girls basketball and football players for serving the banquet this year. Also to the parent volunteers who prepped, plated and cleaned up. We hide them behind the scenes. None of this is possible without many volunteers. Thank you all!
